Fun with the RX-1

Got out for a little while this afternoon with my dad. Not a photo trip, but that is what I bought the RX1 for - those times when I might want to have a camera along, but photography is not the purpose of the trip.

The RX1 files can take a lot of processing without falling apart. In the photo below, the rocks on the far side were in deep shadows and the falls were wanting to blow the highlights. I used -100 for the highlights and +100 for the shadows in LR4. It is pretty obvious when you really look at the photo and notice the different color temperature of the rocks on the near side versus far side. That could be adjusted some using a brush to normalize the white balance, but I didn't do that in this case. I don't intend to print the image so I didn't bother. The point I am trying to illustrate is that the image holds up nicely to pretty heaving processing adjustments even when pixel peeping at 100%.

Curiosity got the best of me so I decided to see if I could get the white balance of the rocks to match closer. This is what I got in about a minute or two. It would take more than that to make it good enough for print (e.g., include the rock portions in shallow water), but I believe it is doable based on this little test.

Mark, your dad is quite a kayaker.

The files are nice and it is amazing what you can recover from the shadows and highlights.

At least my sense of humor is intact. I think. I still have 20" of snow, drifting to 48", to clear out of my 225' driveway, so we shall see. But we Mainers are tough and shoveling snow never caused drain bamage. At least know signs gyet.

When I lived in VT, I happened to be within a couple blocks of a small apartment complex and I was able to hire the guy that plowed the complex to plow my driveway at the same time. :) Clearing the walk between driveway and front door was enough work for me.

Hopefully, all of the snowfall will offer some great photo opportunities for you.

Welcome to the fun Ashwin. I look forward to seeing your photos and you are off to a great start. The first photo of the little girl is excellent and I really like the variety of photos in the first set.

Ashwin, I agree with Mark....lovely set of very diverse images and #1 is my favorite too!

Obviously though, the RX-1 suffers from the same IR sensitivity issue as the M8....Just look at all the magenta in that last shot...LOL!

Well, I don't know how much fun it was, I sent my RX-1 to Larado, TX, and Sony sent it back. They did reset the camera which I had to change back again. They did lose my black cloth bag that came with the camera.

But here is a bit of RX-1 porn. This is my camera with optical finder and lens cap. There has been a lot of talk about price. The camera is $2,800 and you can get about $200 in reward points by getting a Sony credit card and ordering from a Sony dealer. B&H is a Sony dealer and will give you 2% rewards, which is about $55. My optical finder was $209 from B&H, not including the $55 dollars in points. My lens metal lens hood was $5.

I am enjoying the camera very much. I went with the optical finder as there are light levels, at night or when using ND filters, where the rear screen has no image. The OVF comes in useful then. I have no problems using the rear screen and I find it refreshing in many cases.

I have put AF on the C-button near the shutter release for focusing in manual focus mode. WB, ISO, and drive modes have been assigned to the dial. I use the gridded screen on the back and only have the image, the image with level, or the setting displayed on the monitor. I find the setting screen easy to setup the camera for those things not on the dial or when using the OVF. I really like the AEL button plus aperture ring to quickly shift the exposure and shutter speed while maintain the exposure. I really like the exposure compensation dial.

The shutter release in nice and soft and quiet. While small, I find the camera easy to hold and I have big hands. And you can just take it anywhere.

I am very pleased with this camera.

Which VC Finder and which hood...can you add a filter with your hood?

I am using the VC 40 Finder but need a hood...just ordered the TGA-1(?) Thumb grip....

The finder is a VC 28mm.

The lens hood was inspired by this (Japanese site so the link looks a little odd):

究極ã￾®ã‚³ãƒ³ãƒ‡ã‚¸ï¼ŸSONY RX1を(助手ã￾Œï¼‰è²·ã￾£ã￾Ÿ: mono-logue

That hood is made by Etsumi for the 16mm Nex lens and only available in Japan--but comes in black or silver. I took the specs for the hood and bought a 49-37mm step-down ring. So yes, the hood will take filters.

The Chiquita lens cap comes from B&H with a label from a banana.

B&H sells bananas?

Great thanks for the info.

Visited the Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes in Death Valley.
Began shooting with my Nikon D800 on a tripod, but the wind was too strong so decided to put everything safely away in my backpack except for the Rx1.
Kept it in my coat pocket and only took it out for a moment to take a photo here and there.
All shots taken hand held about an hour or two after sunrise.
Most at f/8 or f/11.
