Re: Fun with the Sony A7 and A7r series

On the other discussion going on, I would like to contribute a few final thoughts.

Zoran referred to "common decency" and this term is usually used to demand that someone shows the common decency to do something or refrain from doing something in cases where someone has grossly violated our social conventions.

The latter being the crux here in my view.

I lived long enough in the US myself, and I was stunned by the amount of prudery and procrastination that I observed when it came to matters of sexualtiy. A sexually extremely charged society would be an understatement in deed.

Social conventions are a matter of "Zeitgeist", and Zeitgeist is a matter of social political as well as economical dominance in a given social structure.

The picture you claim to feel offended by displays what I would descirbe as partial nudity, and that triggers you to quote netiquette and referr to US law etc.

It is no secret that the biggest consumers of porn, and that is not the category Werner's picture falls into, are conservatives, the very people shoveling their common sense and morality down our throats with pleasure.

Edelman / Harvard Business School:
http://people.hbs.edu/bedelman/papers/redlightstates.pdf

It does not endanger the development of a child to see bare breasts, and hey, "normally" that is what they see the first time they are around on this planet anyways if you get my drift.

I find your demand and referral to common sense and respect utterly risible, and that is the last I have to say on that matter.
None of your "argument" would have any value in front of any US Human Resource department or local decency laws, and this us US based board with US based owners and mainly US based membership. Who is biggest consumers of what, or any other theatrics based "argument" is completely irrelevant, laws are laws, rules are rules, respect is respect. Until they are way they are you are obliged to abide by them. No amount of anything changes that.

Instead of red I think a 18 percent grey would be photographically more apt to meter off of. ROTFLMAO

That would also retain the original black-and-white rendering of the image, rather than converting it to color.

...and yet it seems most of the US based viewers of this thread don't have their panties in a twist over this.

I think the thing about the image that I object to is that it doesn't represent (necessarily) worthwhile conditions to be spending time working over with HDR.

I'd like to see the central image of the HDR bracket to understand what is being added to the image by working this over.

Werner, are you willing to show us that? Some of your other HDR images from that workshop are truly fantastic, and I'd like to see how this particular image benefits from HDR. Feel free to censor the dirty pillows if you want to. I was never one for silicone anyway.

In other news my FD 24mm f2 just arrived! Lovely little lens and even had the original lens hood, albeit with bayonet lugs worn almost through, had to use blutak to get it to stay on the lens. I'll go out and test it tomorrow and compare to the FD 24mm f2.8 I have. I hope it's good, it's really nice. Got a shoot that I want to use it for on Friday with my mcgyvered A7r's shutter release (drawing pin and gaffer tape, wish I was joking but only way to get it to work after the Lolumina snapped the whole thing off).

I'm playing with my 17 TSE all week
I wish I had the time, last week we went and photographed the largest private collection of documents from the past century of the Jewish community in Iraq and India in the owners house, shifts around the clock for two days. Lot of stuff there that museums would give their eye teeth for. Spent this week organising, cropping and outputting the stuff with hungry and desperate scholars straining at the leash and not giving me a seconds peace while Capture One drove me up the wall. :) Shooting long scrolls in sections and then trying to stitch them back together again is a nightmare! I've yet to work on a suitable methodology.

Bob, Guy, and Jack, as I said before it is your house and your call.

But please notice your decision makes this forum non-friendly toward any person that might visit it at work. You are well aware how HR departments look at this kind of stuff, that they have zero tolerance for it and that excuse of it being "indirect" and in the name of "art" would not fly in front of them (especially when term art can't be applied to item in question).

It also makes it non-friendly to anybody that doesn't want to be exposed to certain kind of content without warning and advance permission due to religious or other beliefs.

Thus I feel with your decision you owe to your visitors full advance warning and disclosure this site might contain content that is not respecting their local laws, regulations, policies or beliefs.

When it comes to me your decision leaves me with no choice but to minimize visits to your site to avoid having to worry what kind of thing somebody might post tomorrow under label of "art".

Ok, maybe there is one more word allowed to me, as all had stared with my post, though i already had stopped responding and was just going on posting pics, as you may have noticed.

Never ever i wanted to offend or disregard anybody.

I tried to say sorry in my first answer to Zoran' post - and i will repeat it here:

Sorry to everyone who feels disregarded by my post!

To my excuse the shot shows an everyday life situation, here in my country, it was made during an international workshop on "Creative BW Photography", held by american author and photographer Harold Davis. People attending the workshop came from everywhere in the world. During the presentation and discussion of the image nobody complained about its content. Others had shot the same subject. Nudity is certenly not its subject.

By posting the pic i was not at all thinking or aware that it could be offending someone or even incite a discussion other than photographic. I would never had the idea posting that on a "nudity" forum.

None of my plenty other shots posted here show anything to be complained at.

Not acceptable to me is any aggression in posts or any form of self censorship.
We should leave that to other places.
If you give respect you get respect!

It is, as the admins wrote a thin path to go. After evaluation of the discussion i decided not to delete the initial post. I reposted instead, a little ironical, the save for work (we don't have that here) version.

I hope we can go on with friendship and post pics, what i will do right on:

You may be right with the HDR subject. It was as said a practice in the WS to do HDR and BW conversions with PS layers in further PP.

No i will not post that pic anymore HDR or not :)

Re: Fun with the Sony A7 and A7r series

What I have seen on various other forums is that images rather than threads are tagged as 'NSFW' and if you choose as such in your control panel, the image shows as blank with a big NSFW label in red. Images tagged as such also only show for registered members. This means that you would never have a nasty surprise but also that large image threads do not have to be labelled themselves as 'NSFW' or that a members would not be able to post certain images in a thread like this which is widely encompassing. I do not know if such a feature would be compatible with the forum software? It would seem to be the easiest solution to give full choice to the viewer on the subject.

Re: Fun with the Sony A7 and A7r series

Purchased the LA-EA4 and the lowly SAL85 2.8.

WOW - crisp and sharp. Light and inexpensive. Won't keep me from having GAS for the 135 1.8 but fills my need for an 85 perfectly.
Jim,

I purchased the exact combo and love the results...and the 135 1.8 will be added in the future.

Not everything I shoot has to have shallow DOF.

It is a rather good lens with a nice OOF rendering.

And not that large on the LA-EA4.

What will you do if Sony announces that lens in native FE mount? It could happen within two weeks.

Re: Fun with the Sony A7 and A7r series

I just have to put some thoughts in from the other side of the ocean:
I do think we are several people from Europe, perhaps a conciderel amount, that follow this site and has followed it for years now.
I must say that I got annoyed, surprised and finally very provoked deep in my soul that anyone could/would allow him-/ or herself, for that matter, to be provoked by a picture of that sort Werner delivered.
My instant thought was that now everything is turning more and more black over there, pitch black.
One thing is if one person is getting annoyed or provoked.
But the others thing is, why on earth bother other people with such thoughts. And worst of all, why putting a restricting sort of unnecessary self censorship and self-restrictions down over all other peoples head, which will do the opposite as the intensions of this site, which is and must be creativity. That picture was in no way related to anything like pornographic expression.
Speaking as an European person it was hard to believe my eyes.
There are thousand of other alarming and annoying things going on in the world today, also in USA to raise ones voice at, 40.000 people a year getting killed by private guns, 100.000’s of poor people dying of illness and poverty, rape and violence all over, people losing their houses and property because of illness, lost job's etc. etc.
Yes, we are bothered with “soft-porn” all over the world today, in TV, internet, posters, everywhere.
And if we don’t want to be confronted, we have to sell our TV, sell our computers, avoid going out etc.
I really don’t get USA, it’s okay for people to run around and kill each others, and buying guns as we others buy potatoes, but a pair of bare breasts in a calendar hanging on a wall in a mechanical garage, and the photographer just takes a documentary-shot…. knock, knock..whats going on…???
That must be the proof that the last sanity is about getting lost. Please, please, proportions, proportions !
Apart from that…..I just want to say...I really like the pictures that you guys provide here.
best Thorkil
Guy you are welcome to delete this, and it was just some thoughts going on through several days now.
