Mikal, I like the processing very much and think it works well for the second image. To me it's a bit unflattering for the subject of the first photo. Especially the way their skin is rendered. Of course, that's an entirely personal impression. I do think the grain looks very good.

John, you're right about the first image and I am glad that you said something. I went back and forth between choosing a smoother image and one that was cooked a bit more. The baby looks better with more grain than does the woman (she is not the woman who placed the baby for adoption, but is a friend of hers) so I erred on the side of how the baby looked.
