banding while silent shooting is enabled

Stick to shutter speeds slower than 1/125 sec during silent mode shooting (electronic shutter) and the images should be free from banding. Unless you are shooting with sunlight and or flicker free continuous light (cinema) sources you will get banding due to the frequency of the light (cycling). Most light fixtures have an on/off cycle. You see them as continuous but they have a frequency and the electronic shutter, since its not really a global shutter, registers that cycle during the exposure if its equal to or faster than 2x the Hz of the local electricity, in the US it is 60 Hz so you get the banding at 1/125 but not at 1/60. At 1/125 sec the banding might not be visible though. At 1/160 it most definitely is.

Hi,
Electronic shutter has slow travel, so I would avoid to use it if it can be avoided. EFCS is essentially vibration free, so I would use that if silent mode would not be absolutely needed.
Silent shutter also forces 12 bit mode, so you loose some DR.

All correct, nevertheless the silent nature of the electronic shutter in certain situations may override with its advantages all its drawbacks! :bugeyes:

Also listed as a limitation in the A7R2 Help Manual
