Update on the Kits, we took a walk on the beach this morning and I was able to take a picture of one of the Kits. We think that they are about 5-6 months old.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

I went out shooting with the NEX 5 and 18-55mm lens today. Took a ride up to the Napa Valley. A bit early in the season for lots of grapes and vineyard shots.

    Camera impressions....
So far the interface has not been a bother at all. Very easy to learn and easy to manage. I've only used it extensively for one day so it could take a bit to see if I end up agreeing or disagreeing with DPReview.

Grip - the grip on the NEX5 is deep and makes the camera really easy to hold when not shooting. When shooting my left hand is on the lens.

LCD - Indoors it is a joy. Outdoors (and it was really midday bright sunshine today) it will be hard to do critical manual focus. I didn't try to manually focus.

Focus - I really need to do some work here. Right now I don't trust it. There were a number of shots where I got focus confirm and I could clearly see that what I wanted to focus on was not in focus. For the most part this happened at 55mm/wide open/close focus (macro sorts of shots). The focus box was really small so I need to read the manual to make sure I understand the functionality.

Screen blackout for shot to shot time - I have the preview turned off and seems instantly back in live view. Feels quicker than both Oly and Panny with review turned off but I will test it more.

Shutter - this is going to sound weird but even though it is loud, I love the feel of the shutter movement. Strange.

Exposure - DPReview complained of over exposure. I was shooting in Aperture priority and I think the exposures look very good.

Wake up after sleep - seems really slow. I changed it from one minute to 5 minutes which then was much better because the camera was only going to sleep when it should.

Lens - 18-55 definitely has distortion. Kudos to Panny for their corrections.

Colors - wow to me they look great. Check out the fruit. Spot on colors at ISO 1600

High ISO - wow....this is my best high ISO camera and it gets up there with my D700

Dynamic Range - I am shocked that I wasn't blowing highlights today.

These shots were all jpegs as I don't have RAW conversion in LR yet.

    ISO 200 55mm f5.6 1/640

    ISO 200 55mm f5.6 1/1000

    ISO 200 55mm f5.6 1/640

    ISO 1600 32mm f7.1 1/20

    ISO 1600 19mm f7.1 1/20

    ISO 1250 55mm f5.6 1/100

    ISO 1600 18mm f7.1 1/25

ISO 200 18mm f5 1/60 (I am shocked that this isn't completely blown out and you can still see detail inside)

    ISO 1600 18mm f7.1 1/20

What a nice set of sample images you have.
The sharpness is impressive for the kit lens.
    The color are really rich.
You don't find the camera design awkward to use?
How do you think it compares to the Oly and Pany offerings in IQ?

    Thanks,
The colors feel good to me but that is what I also love about my A900
Camera doesn't feel awkward at all but I am used to using small cameras and have the GF1 and E-PL1
I had the G2 and E-PL1 with me today but I decided that I couldn't be bothered to do controlled tests. At high ISO the Sony is clearly better. I think the Sony also has more dynamic range and I was able to hold highlights that I think would have been problematic on both the Panny and Oly cameras.

More tomorrow from the Pride parade in San Francisco. It was 85 in Napa and an hour later and 60 miles further south it is 60 degrees....

Adding some more shots to test other camera/lens functions

Testing the bokeh in a really busy scene - it doesn't swirl (yeah)

Not that easy to get focus on the white in the wind

Lens distortion - yup it distorts + freebie self portrait (LOL)

Skylight torture test (there is glass above hence reflections

Still surprised I held the detail in the curtains

    Transition to OOF areas

    Yum

Can't wait for the grapes to get bigger I found some good spots for later in the season and a different time of day

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Terry, I'm impressed! i haven't yet had the time to go out shooting except around the house. I shot some panoramas today and they just blow me away. I'm not quite sure how to post them.

Did you set the jpgs to be sharper out of the camera or did you add sharpening in LR? I too have found the DR to be really good. By the way, If you set the display to sunlight I found in very bright sun today I could manually focus and framing was easy, especially since you can tilt the CD up toward you and hold the camera down lower. I didn't shade the LCD with my body though I could have.

Terry, what exposure mode were you using, spot, center or multi? Outside I found multi worked pretty well but inside I found center to be better though you had a higher chance to blow out highlights which multi did not. However, then I had to change the exposure comp in LR and make other adjustments. There is an amazing amount of latitude in the shots, even in JPG. It will be interesting to see how it behaves in RAW once LR offers a conversion. I haven't tried the Sony converter yet.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

congratulations on new toys chaps - I'm impressed Terry (looks like a nice place to have lunch as well!).

Terry - how does the size of the kit zoom compare to the m4/3 zooms?

It really bugs me that none of these cameras come with a 24-xx (something between 69 and 100). My all time favorite zoom is still the lovely Oly 12-60 f2.8/f3.5.

You two have the sublime - I've been playing with the ridiculous (vlux20), but I've been having lots of fun!

    Just this guy you know

    John,
I didn't sharpen the jpegs except in a few I added clarity which is close. In my export from LR routine I leave it set to sharpen for screen and normal. All of these used multi on exposure.

Thanks on LCD. I had it on auto and will change it today.

Jono, I will take pics of the kit zooms since I have all three here. I love the metal build of the Sony it feels great but it also has the most distortion.....see shot of the bar shelves.

I just bit the bullet, and ordered a NEX5 + "kit lens."

    Anyone using RAW????

Are the alpha lens adapters available?? All I see on their website is preorder.

Thanks, and keep all the images coming.

I haven't used RAW yet don't want to deal with the Sony proprietary.
Yes, adapters should be available. I ordered Friday and surprise mine shows that is is shipping tomorrow. I think they might have most of the stuff in stock now because the 16mm shows shipping along with fisheye adapter.

Looks like after market body caps are going to be pricey!

Terry, Can you show some shots using your M lenses?

I think mounting the lens in an m4/3rds adapter, wrapping the camera end of the adapter with a hand kerchief would make it possible to hold the lens to take some test snaps.

    Vivek,
I exchanged emails with jinfinance (ebay) yesterday M adapter should be ready this week.

Looking very good Terry! Seems a logical add-on to a Sony kit. Also, Bouchon -- at least the one in Yountville -- is one of my favorites! The bakery is amazing...

All of the samples and user replies so far on this camera prove that DPR has a bone with Sony stuff. They are looking pretty stupid right about now with the review they posted.

That was the one in Yountville. One of my favorite places. I had a Bouchon Bakery in NY just a few blocks from me in NY. I have a yummy baguette and a macaron downstairs.

Not defending DPReview here but Sony didn't do themselves any favors either
    1. They were told they couldn't publish images on launch other sites could
    2. They were given pre-prod 16mm that Sony initially claimed were production
    3. They were given review units with the wrong firmware and the firmware they tested was 1.03 and it seems we have 1.04

The users will sort it out and see if the camera works for them.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

    Looking good Terry.

I'm finding the camera to be much better than I expected given the reviews I've seen so far. It's pretty quick, very small and light, and the sensor is definitely a step up in image quality from the 4/3rds cameras.

I shoot in either Aperture or Manual priority and the only real gripe I have is that it would be nice to have more direct control over ISO changes. Changing ISO is still pretty quick even though you have to go through the menu to do so.

Here's a few from the local hot air balloon festival. These were shot raw and processed with Raw Developer. I'm definitely seeing more detail in the raw files vs the jpgs.

    Greg -
These look really good. The good news about the reviews is they left us pleasantly surprised when we got the cameras rather than disappointed. LOL.

My box had no rear lens cap or body cap. I called Sony and they were sending a rear lens cap but a body cap is still a mystery part that I can't locate through SonyStyle. I assume the 16mm will have to serve that function. What came in your box?

Terry, I think we are all in that boat. Maybe Sony will take note and fix this in the future and send us all caps on request.

Can you provide the link for the E to M adapter. I would like to order one and see how my M lens works on this camera.

John - This looks like it stitched well. I need to do some more work with it. I did a couple yesterday that I was not completely pleased with. Need to get the speed right. I like how the camera shows it like a movie.

I shot a few others and they all stitched really well. Beginners luck The hard part is figuring out how to export them so they will show properly on the web and not having a roll printer, how to print for best effect.

Link to order M adapter please?

None that I know of available yet. I looked on ebay for NEX adpaters and there is a Canon FD one from Jinfinance. They make a lot of m4/3 adapters so I sent them an email. Response was they would have one in about a week. Go onto ebay and do the same thing. Send them your email address. They are going to email me when the adapter is available.

By the way, I just discovered that LR 3 does not import the raw files. I saw the message that it didn't recognize the file formats but I thought it was still copying them into the folder so I formatted the card afterwards. Now I have discovered they are gone. Just a word of warning.

From the SF Pride Parade this AM. Shot it side by side with the A900. I will say it is great to have a live view camera for those situations where you want to get a different angle and it is easier to do without having to keep the camera at eye level. Next some B&W after this riot of color.

thanks for the initial test, appreciate it. I have a gh1 and am considering a nex, what do you think of the sharpness of the two lenses compared to the 14-45mm and the 20mm?

Terry, I am confused. I see two of the same image with the same file number, not one with A900 and one with NEX 5.

I edited the link. It should be OK now however they are not the same shots with each camera. I used both during the shoot but you will be hard pressed to tell me which camera each came from without looking at the exif.

Terry, can you shoot some close up portraits with the eyes sharply in focus so we can see how well it focuses on the eyes? I lack a model for this at the moment or I would do it.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Terry, The most striking difference I find between the NEX and the A900 shots is the way they are lit.

All of the NEX shots have the sunlight behind the subjects and the reverse with the A900 (which naturally look better).

This is why I would not want to be using a manual focus lens with an LCD only cam.

Any news/possibility at all if Sony would have an useful EVF for this cam or would it be only with the NEXT model?

Sony did say they would be releasing an OLED EVF later this year, or at least it was a rumor

sorry, sony said nothing, its just a rumor,so it's anybodies guess

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

I need some help from someone with more knowledge and experience to explain the following phenomenon to me. I shot an 18% grey card to day with the GXR and the NEX. Focal length was set to approximately the same focal length. The f stop was set to 4.5 for both cameras and ISO 200. The images were viewed in LR 3. The results are as follows:

CAMs Multi Center Spot Center Grey Measure (RGB)
    GXR 1/45 1/45 1/45 (132.8, 131, 131)
    NEX 1/30 1/25 1/30 (164.2, 164.2, 162.6) (166.7, 166.7, 165.2) (151.9, 151.9, 149.7)

    Ideal (160, 160, 160)

On screen the Sony images more closely match what I see in front of me looking at the grey card. On the Sony images, the histogram peak is always to the right of center about .5 stops. The GXR image seems darker but the histogram shows its peak right in the center. Also look at the differences in shutter speed. Can anyone explain what might be happening?

John I'm not sure but are you trying to recreate this test that DPReview did? about 2/3 down the page on metering?

Not exactly. I'm really trying to understand the metering on the NEX and how it relates to the GXR and also to understand DPR's review. Here is the same shot, one taken using multi and the other center metering side by side.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

"The NEX-5 and NEX-3 are equipped with a powerful new 14.2-megapixel* Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, specially tuned to deliver uncompromising still-photo and movie image quality. Equal in surface area and performance to the large, APS-C image sensors used in Sony's acclaimed α system digital SLR cameras, it offers exceptionally rich tonal gradation and true-to-life color. Proprietary Sony processing technologies are also incorporated directly into the sensor, assuring clean, low-noise signal output and ultra high-speed data transfer."

They don't tell you how they get the "rich tonal gradation". Seems the tuning is different.

Terry, what's your assessment of the user interface as compared to the Panny and the Oly?
