Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

The NEX3 kit with the 16mm does not come with a hood. I'm not sure if the 16mm sold as a separate lens comes with a hood.

Here is a photo of everything that comes with an NEX3/16mm kit. The plastic case on the left is for the flash unit. The charger plugs directly into a wall outlet (no cord.)

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Why would they bother to put a bayonet attachment part on the front part of the lens (16/2.8) if it is not for a hood and if they don't supply one or sell one?

    Lovely flash case!

It will be really interesting if someone finds a way to make an extension cable for the flash.

To use with the fisheye adapter, and the ultra wide adapter:

The zoom that Terry shows also seems to have a bayonet attachment.

Thanks for the link, Monza. What I really need to see is a 35mm M lens on the NEX. If a 35mm lens performs reasonably well at the corners, then I'll order the camera ASAP.

They are supposed to email me when available. They indicated next week.

I think I read that the 16mm purchased on it's own has a hood. Supposedly the 18-55 hood fits on the 16 but not sure if it is the right size for a 16mm lens. I will let you know this weekend

This is going to be interesting. I'm hoping the 35/2 Planar Contax G works well on the corners, that makes for an effective fast 50 (well, 52.5mm, but close enough.) There is no edge smearing on micro 4/3 with that lens, crossing fingers there is no issue with the Sony either.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Agreed. The 35mm f2 Contax G is actually a Planar design, rather than a Biogon, and I have a feeling that may be why it performs better at the edges. Speaking of Biogons, has anyone here tried the ZM 35mm Biogon on m4/3? I'm curious how that lens would perform on NEX. Also the CV 35mm 1.4 Classic.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

You are correct, I have a habit of calling it a Biogon. I've edited my post.

If I'm not mistaken the ZM Biogon has edge issues but that's from memory, probably from posts here; I haven't used it myself.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Well, I found my answer for the ZM 35mm f2 on m4/3. It doesn't look great at the edges:

    http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/showpo...9&postcount=58

I've been looking at the design of the CV 35mm f1.4, and although I'd certainly prefer a Leica or ZM if I was shooting the M9, the CV may very well perform better at the edges on NEX. I'll probably just buy a NEX+M adapter and rent every 35mm I can find until one works well....or, Sony could do me a favor and just release a darn standard prime. lol.

The only M - 35 (actually adapted screw mount) I own is the color skopar which is the smallest lens around. It will look teeny on the NEX lens mount. However, I doubt you were looking for an f2.5 lens.

I've seen that the color skopar does okay at the edges of m4/3. I wouldn't be opposed to f2.5, but, you're right that I would prefer f2 or faster. Thanks, Terry!

Hmmm - I have several M lenses . . . perhaps you'll have to make a detour on your Ireland trip (something somewhere says I owe you a drink . . . or was that a decent supper, or even both!).

(I wonder how it would work with the new 35 'lux?)

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

I have asked RJ about a NEX adapter (or at least half of it) to fit Olympus pen F lenses.

They (barring the 20/3.5- I don't have that one) all seem to do well on the NX10, in particular the 40/1.4 (marvelous ).

I am sure the 42/1.2, 60/1.5, etc all will do fantastically well on an APS-C sensor.

If the new 35 lux is the only 35 that works well on NEX...I might as well just go with the M9 and a cheap 50mm. lol.

Oh yeah! I forgot all about Pen F. It's kind of a strange twist to put a Pen lens on NEX Have you tried the 38mm 1.8, or is the 40mm 1.4 that much better?

Yes, I have that as well (and the rare 38/2.8 pancake/ another rare 38/2.8 "regular"). The 40/1.4 is that much better.

I saw a bunch of photos on Flickr that were taken with the EP1 and the CV Nokton 35mm f1.2 (which I can no longer find, of course). The photos were terrific, it makes a very nice portrait lens on M4/3. The question is, do you want a lens that big?

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

Yeah, the Nokton is a giant. I'm more concerned about corner performance. If you see a bunch of shallow DOF shots from the Nokton with the subject centered, it's hard to tell whether there is the infamous m4/3 corner smearing. I don't need perfect corners, but I don't want them to be a smeared mess, either.

Great! Thanks Terry, look forward to seeing the results!!
Hope you take up Jono's offer. Wow, a shootout between NEX5 and M9 using the same 35 'Lux sounds cool and would be very interesting to see how much better the M9 is IQ wise.
From what I have seen of the Sony 16 on the web so far, it looks like you are better off with the kit zoom.
Also, if you were to compare the A900 and NEX5 RAW shots with no Noise Reduction, how many stops better would say the A900 is over the NEX5 in high ISO noise performance?
The green landscape of Ireland sounds like a perfect photo break from the hot, hazy brown landscape here in the Bay Area with the continuous sunny days.

You know, come to think of it Jono, the 35 lux may not be great on the NEX. That rear element extends pretty close to the sensor. I can't wait to read the results.

I was going to build in more time after but was a bit afraid of flight disruptions if Iceland Volcano acted up. I'm going in and out of Shannon an didn't think there were forum members in the area.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

A900 is my main camera. M4/3 has been my secondary system. I would like to not take too much with me and am considering the NEX's for that duty. I have more varied lenses for m4/3. I also have an IR converted GF1. So, tough decision. Nex 3 cheap enough to do a new IR conversion. My alpha to E mount adapter arrives this week so I will know more soon.

Keep us posted on the Alpa lens adapter + Alpha lenses on the NEX5. It seems that the camera can control the f stop on Alpha lenses, but no such luck with non-Alpha lenses. I wonder if those non Alpha lens adapters will have an external diaphragm???

    Thanks.

Ahh, I see now where you're going. Quite a distance from me in Dublin. Some nice parts of the country planned in there. West Cork would be a personal favorite area for me. Shame I haven't been there in years.
I doubt you'll have time for a trip to Dublin, but if you do, please drop me a PM as it would be lovely to show you my town.

    Ah! "Rockwell" to the rescue!

The firmware update introduces a nice feature that can be enjoyed with the Bravia TV.

This is great news! I am sure there will be offers soon when buying a Bravia TV.

This is all well, and good.

But, how about making the upgrade usable on a Mac???????

With all the Mac users, I am surprised that Sony only added their firmware upgrade in a Windows format??????????

Also, the movie files don't seem to be readable by Photoshop, or IMovie????

    Someone help.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

The latest version of BibblePro handles the NEX raw files pretty well. Here, side by side is the LR corrected JPG and the BibblePro adjusted RAW converted to a JPG. For some reason, what I am uploading doesn't match what I see in the application or when I open the JPG on the desktop. I'm adding the last image as a screen shot for comparison.

dxomark just posted their analysis. The NEX5 has 12,3 stops of dynamic range! That is incredibly high! The GH1 has about 11 and the E-P1/GF1 have around 10.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

I started to do some work with the in camera HDR capabilities (need to have camera only set to jpeg - took a while to figure this out). The camera will you both the original exposure and the optimized HDR version. You can also set the strength (number of EV difference). Here are a few image pairs. Plenty or more work to do and to see how the resulting jpegs take any post processing. Over the weekend will see how this works on outdoor shots in less extreme lighting.

I'm pretty sure this was maxed out at the 6 stops.

I pretty sure I sent this to 3EV

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

I've had my hands on the Nex-5 for two weeks now, thought I'd share some pictures and impressions.
It is my first camera and I think Sony had a spot with me when making this camera. I felt DSLRs were too big and advanced for a newbie like me to invest in and actually use. P&S didn't seem like enough of an improvement over cell phone cams that I would dedicate a pocket to one.

So now I have a Nex-5 with the 18-55, gotta say I'm enjoying it alot. And I'm looking forward to bringing it on vacations instead of borrowing my dads Digilux2, which I didn't exactly enjoy carrying around all day.

Here's some pics. These are unprocessed fine jpegs taken on iAuto:

These are pictures taken with the Auto HDR:
    The original exposure.

    The HDR.

Don't have the original exposure on this one, so posting only the HDR.

    Panoramas:
This is a vertical sweep panorama going downwards set to wide, it covers about 180 degrees iirc.

The elephant house in Copenhagen, no elephants out sadly, set to standard width, panning right.
