    re: Fun With Sony _____

Thanks Bill, not sure why I didn't see your comments earlier.

Here's one that won't win any awards for sharpness, but it's a shot I've been trying to get for a while... more details below.

Moon rising behind James Lick Observatory, which sits on the peak of Mount Hamilton East of San Jose, Ca.

The dome over the 36" Crossley reflector is silhouetted by the moon, the dome housing the 120" C. Donald Shane reflector is visible to the left.

This is a difficult shot to line up, opportunities arise maybe twice per year from this location. There are 20 miles of hazy atmosphere between the camera and the observatory and of course many more miles of atmosphere between the observatory and the moon. First time I planned this was several months ago but it was raining and the mountain was socked in. Maybe it will be cold and clear next time around.

    Photo taken with a 8" Dobsonian reflector telescope(1200mm f/5.9).

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

What, no posts for 3 weeks, Nobody having fun? All waiting for the Nex 7 or A77 to get there again?
Well, I'm happy with what I have (for the time being ) and are still liking my Nex 5 a lot:

Here with an original Minolta 20/2.8 and the LA-EA-1 adapter:

Great mood Dave, beats sharpness in my book every day.
Btw, interesting that your 1200/5.9 mirror telescope shows in the exif as a 100/2.8 Macro

Here's two from the beach the past weekend. Not the best weather but that gives other photo opportunities:

    Both A850 + MinO 35/2

Thanks! Yes, the EXIF is annoying. The ebay source could not program over 1000mm and couldn't get the aperture right. By the time I found out, the adapter had already been converted from M42 to T-mount and couldn't be returned. Anyway, here is what the 100mm macro looked like on the day.

    Death Valley "Racetrack" revealed . . .

    a900 16-35 @ 16mm

I often wonder about the "context" of the iconic photo locations (especially in the US). I'm even considering doing a coffee-table book of these locations showing the tons of photographers shooting them on any given day. I think it would be both interesting and telling. But I digress . . .

For those of you who have never had the opportunity to visit the "Racetrack" in Death Valley, I'll bet you may have wondered exactly how large those mysterious "moving rocks" are. Well, here's your answer. This is my photo partner shooting one of them:

And here's my image of that same rock:

Still nobody else having fun .

Here's another one. Taken as a snapshot when I just saw the opportunity.

My original caption was : "Sleepover party for princesses"

However that doesn't fit, princesses arrive with horse drawn coaches and certainly don't pull their own suitcase.
Who has a better caption for me ?

Yes, using the conkin system. When I went to the lee filter holder for 4x6" filters with the 77mm ring, it didn't vignette using 1 or two filters. Most of the time, however, I just hand hold them....

    Hope this helps.

It seems like most of the recent photos have been a bit...static (not that I'm objecting, especially to Madam Butterfly!) Perhaps I can get away with changing the pace a little anyway though.

Too bad they didn't get much of a chance to slow down and appreciate the view:

Before having my a850, I was spoiled by my 5D and worried a lot about its noise
Here and there I currently shoot using iso 3200 without any hesitation.

    Very quiet here these days

My wife, daugters and son were shopping, and I waited sitting on a street bench and started playing with my Nex and an old Leica M lens.
This is what I caught of scenes that just unfolded in front of me

    First a small series:

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

A few shots taken today with the NEX 5N and Contax G 28mm f/2.8 Biogon. Raw images converted to tiffs with the Sony raw converter and then processed in LR3 (except 1st image converted in Raw Developer 1.92). Still juggling between the NEX and Ricoh GXR. I'll need to wait for the GXR M module before deciding which to keep (might keep the NEX in any event for use with the Contax G lenses). So far I think that the edges and corners look OK with the NEX and both CV M and Contax G lenses. Hope that Adobe support won't be too long coming for the NEX raw files.

It seems the high iso capability of the 5N is really good. See here
However I found the Nex 5 "original" is no slough either in that department:

Almost zero, Carlos. The dark top left corner on the black and white image is part of the processing - can't see it on the original. I show between f5.6 and f11

    Keith,

Very nice B&W composition with the CV 12 on the C3. I'm enjoying the 5N, but struggle sometimes with the "tiny factor" and small buttons.

Re: Fun with the NEX cameras....

    Thanks, Show Performance

Thanks Carl: today I went for a walk with the Sony C3 and CV 12mm, the Ricoh GXR P10, and the Minolta Maxxum 5 film camera with 28-80 zoom. My order of preference in ease of use and fun were:
    Minolta
    Ricoh
    Sony

But I can't see my Minolta results for another week
The Ricoh is much better to handle and use than the Sony. I am using the tilt LCD on the Sony for shooting from my waist, but I did miss an EVF today (very sunny)
As you know, I love the P10 for the range it gives, but I think IQ from my A12 modules on the Ricoh are better than my C3

Today was a trial with the Contax G 45mm f/2 Planar on the NEX-5N.

    Beautiful images as usual Carl

I received my Rainbow Imaging m4/3 to Nex adapter today and can now make use of the dozen or so m4/3 adapters I have. Tried it with a Minolta MD today and it works great.
Trouble is, the same thing will probably happen with the GXR m-mount so I will be able to use a huge legacy collection on any one of three cameras. I'll be so long working out possible combinations no photography will get done

Thanks Keith. I know what you mean - too many lens options can lead to gridlock

Some variations on a recurring theme (from my daily walk) using the NEX-5N and CV 15mm f/4.5 SW Color-Heliar.
