Unhappy John Stovall Has Passed

I just received this email from a friend of mine who knew John. I had been net friends with John for many years. We lived close to each other, although I never had the chance to meet John in person. He was a great supporter of my street photography and always talked about meeting me and buying me a cup of coffee. I cannot begin to tell you of the absolute sadness and emptiness I am feeling right now.

John, was a righteous dude. The best of the best. A true Texas gentleman and a legend in our rugged, but gentle land.

I will miss you, my friend.

Here is a copy of the email I received with the details about John's passing.

"John Stovall was found dead earlier today (people don't know when over the last couple days that he passed), I don't know cause of death-funeral is Monday Morning in a small town outside of Dublin.
Graveside service will be held at 10am on Monday, 21 June at the Burkett Cemetary in Coleman. Harrell's Funeral home in Dublin is handling the arrangements.

Thought that you would want to know."

That is sad. John was a regular here and always had a way of finding interesting articles or stories to share. Although I never met him, he seemed to be a very nice and helpful person. I will miss his interaction here.

Wow, that is sad. He had gone through a rough period with his wive's illness and death and it seemed like he was really now having a lot of fun with his photography.

Terribly sad. Only knew John for his contributions to this board. His referrals to articles of interest elsewhere were always worthwhile reads.

We'll miss you, John. RIP.

Re: John Stovall Has Passed

Very sad news. John was an educated man and loved to share his thoughts and great findings on this board.
A lot of them were left unadressed... today i'm a bit ashamed to be among those who so often followed the links without taking the proper time to leave a note or a thanks. John, your contributions were much appreciated . Sometimes fun, sometimes educative, often inspiring, always instructive. You'll be dearly missed.

Re: John Stovall Has Passed

my heart is breaking.

John was always thinking about chucking it all and coming over to europe on a freighter to visit. we even discussed what cheeses and wines we would have...

John, if you can hear me, you're still invited. travel will be so much easier for you now... and even though my cameras and lenses aren't quite as nice as yours, you are welcome to use anything i have so you don't have to worry about lugging your gear.

tonight i will have some Patron in your honour, as you did for your wife a little over two years ago. it didn't make the loss any less keen, but we had fun discussing the merits of certain tequilas over others. and you had been so touched when your friend had brought it over, not knowing what other comfort he could bring...

nasdrovia!

may you be reunited your beloved forever.

Re: John Stovall Has Passed

My biggest regret is that I never took John up on meeting him at a local coffee shop. Over the years, we had exchanged literally hundreds of emails. John was a very complicated person. Although liberal in nature, like me, he had a very independent streak and we clashed many times politically. But, I loved him dearly because I respected his intellect and wit. And, he is probably the most well-read person I ever encountered. John once told me that he had a personal library of almost ten thousand books, many of them rare first editions.

John was never the same after the passing of his beloved Jeanne. I know it took a lot out of him.

What a strange time we live in. When I opened that email and saw those first words, I was completely stunned and the tears just started to flow, and this for a man that I never met in person, but I felt as though I had just lost a best friend.

I remember fondly the frist time he emailed me one of his "road kill" shots and told me that he was starting a new project and he asked for my opinion on it. I told him that he was a crazy old bastard. He emailed me back and said that he was fully aware of that fact but could I please keep it to myself.

I will never forget him.

Stunned.

Here is some info I found in a similar thread at the Texas Photo Forum, where he was obviously quite active and well known.

Graveside service will be held at 10am on Monday, 21 June at the Burkett Cemetary in Coleman

There were no instructions on flowers, but when his wife passed the instructions were in lieu of flowers donations should be made to the Dublin Public Library or to the Dublin Historical Society.

I'd be happy to arrange a donation on behalf of GetDPI. Probably best to to his Historical Society?

For those interested in participating, you can send a paypal (please use the personal payment option so there are no fees) to jack@getdpi.com and put John Stovall as the subject. I will collect all donations up through next Thursday (the 24th) and forward a single check from us to the society in his name on Friday morning the 25th.

Sound okay?

Re: John Stovall Has Passed

I'm saddened to hear of John's passing. I, like many others here, appreciated his posts, and his links. I hope he and Jeanne have a wonderful reunion.

Re: John Stovall Has Passed

I too am saddened to hear of John's passing. I didn't know John. But I can
imagine John's personality and character by those that knew him and have posted their comments here.

May John rest in peace.

Re: John Stovall Has Passed

John always reminded me of a Texan with true grit! We will all miss what he brought to this forum.

A friend of John's got in touch to let me know that for folks who plan on attending the graveside service, they plan on meeting after the service here:

Coleman, TX 76834-4205

Re: John Stovall Has Passed

Though I'm a newcomer here and never had the chance of meeting John in person, I am deeply saddened by his loss, or our loss for that matter. May he rest in peace.

Re: John Stovall Has Passed

Jonn was very informative with links to interesting articles and always busy with some sort of project.
I found him honest and open, but also a bit controversial at times.
Do you recall the days at DPR ? The Dead Cat and the Faux-LIECAs ?
His passing makes me not only feeling sad but smiling too.
He'll be missed.

LOL. I do remember those. Like you, I'm smiling at some of those times and thats a good thing IMO. He's left us with lots of reasons to remember him and it's not many people in forums that leave that legacy. I suspect that people that knew him personally will have lots of memories also and he'll be missed by a lot of people as some knew him personally and like most of here and at other forums, virtually. Wouldn't we all like to feel we affect and touch so many people.
