EBAY FEES

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this..but I am trying to find out what the fees are . I was told 10% of the sold price. Sounds a little high.
Anyone can add light to this ? Paypal I know is 3% and I believe is separate from ebay cost. Thank you

HI Will, I did call and its Correct 10% on final sale, Thats a lot to pay.
I have been using them for years and it seems the fees have gone up. 10% is a lot to pay. ex selling a camera for 6,000 = 600. for the fee and plus paypal fees 3%. Thank you Will.

The Final Value Fee used to be capped at about £100 ($175) nor did it include the shipping cost. The current fees are ludicrous for an automated online service and are approaching the kind of percentage that a proper auction house like Sotheby's levy. I haven't sold anything for years via eBay (too much hassle and uncertainty nowadays) and I don't think I will be doing so anytime soon. For camera gear you can't beat the various forum classifieds for a much less painful experience.

In case you haven't looked lately, the sellers fees are 10% of up to $7500. In other words sell an item for $7500 and you will be assessed a $750 fee.

This is so ridiculous i will never sell on Ebay again

By the time you add both eBay and PayPal fees, plus shipping, it comes to approximately 20% of the selling price. They have various mechanisms to control people from adding higher shipping and handling fees to recoup this, you're locked in.

What this means is that you should try selling your stuff here and on other good special interest forums for 10-15% less than you would on eBay, and please contribute to the forum upkeep if available.

I'll still look at and sometimes use eBay but usually the prices are too high, people are asking nearly or more than new prices for used un-warrantied items. I really don't understand why they bother other than to launder drug money?

eBay may be a bit more expensive, but where else can you get that kind of customer exposure with actual potential buyers? You could try here at GetDpi, but with more tire kickers than actual buyers, ads just become camera porn...
You know who you are!

I despise the ebay/paypal fees but each route of selling/buying used gear has its advantages and disadvantages.

With eBay you reach a larger market. It's also a good place to sell if you don't really know the value of what it is you're selling. I recently sold a 34mm Alpa multi use adapter on eBay that I had no luck selling on GetDPI, and actually got more on ebay after fees than I had it advertised on GetDPI for. I've also gotten lucky and found some crazy deals on eBay, and have actually made money buying on eBay and then selling the same things elsewhere. I've gotten good money for some used Apple products I've sold through eBay that I thought had little to no value.

The forums I find are better for the buyers and the sellers if you can trust the buyer/seller. I've bought stuff and sold on GetDPI (645z, A7RII, various other stuff) and LuLa (Alpa STC, various random other stuff) and haven't had any issue. As a seller, you're able to often get more for your item than you could on eBay since you don't have to deal with fees, and buyers are able to get things cheaper than they can through eBay since sellers don't have to deal with fees.

I've also sold plenty through Craiglist (guitars and camera gear), which has its pros and cons too. You have to deal with way more scammer/low ball types, but serious people usually come through and buy that know their gear and make reasonable offers...and I end up making about what I would on eBay after fees with cash in hand. Last thing I sold on Craigslist was the A7RII I bought on GetDPI and was able to get more for it than what I advertised on GetDPI because I didn't have to deal with paypal or shipping. Have had good luck selling guitars on Craigsist too, which saves the stress of having to ship the guitar.

I've done a lot of business with Ebay sales over the years. Far as I can see, the cost of doing it is still FAR less than selling through a traditional camera outlet, like B&H or KEH, and it is, of course, higher than private sales through forums like GetDPI.

Ebay represents a valuable service with lots of good features and a huge audience. Just read all the information on their seller site first so you know what you are going to pay for, that's all. Whether the price is high or low for what you're trying to do is up to you to determine.

Being upset because of they charge for their service is ridiculous in my book ... If you don't like the price, don't use the service; find another that's cheaper and gets your job done. That's all.

Traditional camera outlets can be ok sometimes too. I sold the 645z I bought through GetDPI to KEH because the price they offered is what I would've gotten through eBay after fees, judging by completed listings at the time I sold. It helps that KEH is down the street from me and selling to them was as simple as dropping it off and picking up my check. I also didn't have to deal with responding to PMs, taking a bunch of pics of the camera for the buyer, shipping, etc.

You make a good point that it's up to the seller to determine whether ebays fees are high and low....I'd recommend anyone selling gear just weigh your options when you sell. eBay isn't the only option.

Horses for courses I find. TBH I’d rather consign ‘normal’ gear locally or use keh for a guaranteed sale with guaranteed price. Basically what I would have got net from eBay certainly but as mentioned, without the hassle of dealing with eBay buyers.

For more specialized gear I’ll sell on forums such as getdpi and LuLa.

When I buy, I basically never use eBay unless it’s from a dealer. I’ll use my local dealer first, or personal purchase from getdpi, LuLa or FredMiranda. I have never had a bad experience with forum purchases or sales. Heck, Joe Colson / Guy & Don Libby are almost on my Shortcut lists :ROTFL: (All great sellers btw).

Unfortunately, KEH has such insulting offers for buying one's gear, it would be foolish to sell to them. Consider their price range for buying your Leica M10 Digital Camera Body, Black {24 M/P}
$1,505.00 - $3,583.00.
Sell it on Ebay if you want it gone and save compared to KEH.

Sadly, there are no more local camera shops with a good used equipment department left in this area. There are hardly any local camera shops left at all... :(

MPB does seem to have an edge in current photos of the items and a great warranty too. I'd like to know where an item ships from though.
