I've had my share of ordering items (mostly lenses) from overseas (Hong Kong, Japan, Germany and Austria) and all were positive experiences both in the item bought and shipping.
Last tuesday I bought a lens that I thought was a great deal. Shipment was immediately sent and I received it just now. The UPS driver tells me I owe him $102.41. Since I know the driver well, I thought he was joking. He wasn't. He told me this was for broker fees which included custom duty of roughly $95.00. I've bought higher priced items in the past and never been slapped with having to pay duty on items I purchased.
Come to think of it, all were shipped through their respective postal service which in turn was handled by USPS. Does anyone know what is the bottom line on custom duties for items purchased overseas?
Thanks
Gerry
