Pentax 25mm f/1.4 C-mount seems to be very popular lately...

I was looking around online for this lens (since I couldn't find Vivek's Computar 25mm f/1.3). B&H is on backorder, so I emailed another CCTV supplier who listed it on their web site. They told me that Pentax has received many orders for this lens from US, Canada and Europe so no stock is available or imminent. I doubt demand for this lens suddenly skyrocketed for CCTV use, so I imagine the boost is due to M 4/3 usage.

Here is a link with some more info on this lens.

    http://www.chiifcameras.com/site2/in...130&Itemid=123

And an associated Flickr page with some bigger sample shots-
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/chiif/s...th/3964527985/

I know a few have posted about this lens here, in particular this was a great thread showing the Pentax compared to some other fast c-mounts-

    http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/showthread.php?t=8410

FYI, I ended up ordering this lens at spytown.com which accepts Paypal payment (feels safer.) It's $92 w/ another $11 for FedEx Ground shipping. EDIT- I just got an email that they are out of stock but will have it in December...

    Hint:

Check out ccd/cctv cameras. I bought a Costar CV-M50 ccd camera on the bay for $95 that came with the Computar 25/1.3 lens. Fine lens, now if I can just figure out what to do with a B&W ccd camera.

I probably should have kept my Pentax, but I just sold it Too many 25mms in the house. I also managed to snap up a Computar 25/1.3 (for $49) here http://www.powellsurplus.com/VisionSys.htm . My understanding was that this was their last one or I would have mentioned it here before, but if anybody wants to bother them about it again, just to make sure, please go ahead. They also had a Fujinon 1" CCTV lens, but I have to shamefully admit that I haven't had a chance to play with either of them, yet. Sorry, never heard of Avenir.

Ha well I just bought one for $25AUD on ebay shortly after my post just for curiosity sakes. No info in english at all on the web, all i know is that its japanese, sometimes used to observe scientific experiments and there is another model that is 25mm f0.95 that is 3times the price of whatever asian currency it was..lol

Would still like to get my hands on the pentax too.

I wonder if the Cosmicar/Pentax lens and the Computar have similar optical formulas. They have very close specs, size, and pricing.

3x the the price for a f/.95 version is still a good value considering price of f/.95, but I don't know if it is really worth that extra stop.

Sorry, just to clear it up for me: What 0.95 lens are we talking about and where would I get that?

    Thanks,

I gave them a call, they accept payment through Paypal.

I don't believe he actually has any Computar 25mm f/1.3 left, but he does have Pentax/Cosmicar 25mm f/1.4. I didn't ask about any other lenses, although there is a Canon and Tamron on that page that are also fast 25mm.

I went ahead and ordered a Pentax from them.

    Thanks for posting the link!

Well, they are depleted at this source, I use a Fuji 25mm f1.4 that is a terrific lens, but you can get the 12.5mm here for $25.00. Some hard vignetting occurs, but it is still worth it:

LOL, I ordered the Computar version from Surplusshed a couple of days ago. It's a 12.5mm f/1.3.

So did they used to have the Fuji 25mm f/1.4 there? I only ever saw the 2 different 12.5mm lenses.

EDIT- Also, CCDWorld still has 1 Pentax 25mm f/1.4 left, like new for $48...

Thanks for the link, thats pretty cheap.

What type of adaptor would I need for this lens? I can only find 16mm C-mount adaptors to micro 4/3, Is that the right size for this lens

for 12.5mm/1.4,You should trim off some bottom parts as the diameter cannot fit into the adapter. The internal diameter of the adapter is just 37.2mm while the lens is about 39mm as I know. You should ask somebody to use a lather to trim it.

Also, the '16mm' doesn't refer to the focal length of the lens, it refers to 16mm film, which these lenses were used for.

The adapter is for all c-mount lenses from wide to telephoto. However, some lenses may require some modification to work- the c-mount wasn't a very clearly defined spec.

Both the Computar and Cosmicar/Pentax have 3 blades. But wide open it actually seems to make a good circle.

Thank you for good answer. But why do cosmicar 12.5mm f1.4 has 6 blades no 3 blades??? What are they difference ??
I think more blades are better for quality photo.

If you shoot mostly wide open it won't matter. I have a Computar 12.5mm f/1.3 and it has 3 blades. I think the blades will mostly just affect bokeh rendition, but with these lenses and these focal lengths, you shoot wide open for bokeh and stop down to get DOF.

I recommend you use the hawkpeng adaptor ... quite a bit on my blog so I won't dribble it all again here ;-)

Thanks pellicle for that detailed blog post on the Computar and the hawkpeng adapter. I came across it earlier, and that is why I chose to go with the Computar + Hawkpeng- it looks like a mod that I can manage myself.

A question for anyone with the Pentax 25mm f/1.4- does it require modification to work with the Hawkpeng adapter? (I guess his eBay name is now hawks_factory or something like that.)

The Computar 25mm f/1.3, is one of the lenses I discovered and reported here.

The 3 bladed aperture does nothing negative.

It is (still) my favored lens in the 25mm FL range. I would recommend f/2.8, though even wide open, it isn't shabby.

Unlike the 12.5mm lenses, this one does cover the m4/3rds sensor (with slight corner vignetting that is easily dealt with in the post). There is a big difference in terms of usefulness.

I remember those pics, very nice. I recently sold my Pentax (at one point I had over 20 25mm c-mounts...), but the main reason was not performance, only size: I have large fingers and this is just one of the smallest ones and I had to fiddle with it too much. Without all the alternatives I would definitely just have put up with that.

    Hi, and thank you.
Lol, yes, the size of that lens is a problem. Now with the Panny 20/1.7 most of those alternative lenses are on more or less permanent vacation. But sometimes, when wanting another look, they are fun to use.

Stefan, I just checked your big 25mm C-mount comparison. Thank you for posting it. Of the C-mount lenses I owned I liked the Kern Switar 26/1.1 the best. Now I have sold it and the only one still with me is the cute little Pentax. As said above it sees very little use. Do you still use any of your lenses? The main reason for me to give up on them is that I want my lenses to cover the sensor and after the arrival of the 20/1.7 there is no real size advantage to the C-mount.

    Hi Jonas,

Thanks for the link, I missed that post before- it's a really nice pic! I previously had a Wollensak, but my results were like Stefan's test shot- very hazy wide open.

I agree with you, in the long run I can see mainly using the Pana 20mm f/1.7. But that is only when it is in my budget. For now the MF equivalent will do at 1/10 the price. There is also something fun about these lenses (that imperfect c-mount look), although practically speaking the Pana 20mm wins out of course on most all counts.

The main reasons I had all these c-mounts were a) a lack of impulse control on ebay and b) 2 opportunities to buy two larger lots of lenses, one of them with 20 mostly 25mm c-mounts - unfortunately, I never had a chance to pick up a 26/1.1 for a reasonable price.... That was long before the projected release of the Panny 20/1.7, so it was a lot of fun to play with the lenses. I have started selling off many of them (maybe a bit late, the prices are falling again...), but I will definitely keep a few, like one Angenieux 0.95 for its speed, the Cooke Kinic for its unusual bokeh, the Canon for its ease of use, and maybe one or two more. Eventually, I will also get the pancake. But for me, personally, the G1 and the fascination with the combo of old glass and new technology helped me rediscover the fun in photography. I had not looked through a viewfinder in a long time, and going back to the basics, having to manually focus and finding the patience and skills for that again, made this a very enjoyable experience for me.

I don't want to stray too far, but want to mention that I think not only the short c-mounts are interesting. The longer ones are very light and small on the G1 and some make excellent primes, like the Kern Macro Switar 75/1.9. I also like the Schneider Xenars which are totally undervalued on ebay IMHO.

That's a good point regarding longer lenses. I used a Canon 50mm f/1.8 on our family Rebel a lot for family pics. I will look out for some of those on the bay...

Here is some info on the Pentax 50mm c-mount (also f/1.4)-

Too bad it requires significant modification.

    snaf,

I use one of the c-mount adapters. Currently, it is the first c-mount adapter that ever appeared- made by Wolfgang Rabe. Others should work once the lens flange is trimmed a bit. I used a key file (the lens flange is brass, soft metal and hence it is easy to file). It took about 35mins or so. Others have done it successfully as well.

I believe the lens in question is a Computar TV 25/1.3 and no Cosmicar.

Also, lens is the proper spelling for a single objective. Lenses- is plural.

    Good luck! Have fun!

Just received the Cosmicar/Pentax 25/1,4. It is so small! Shorter than a 35mm canister, same diameter. No, the lens doesn't fit in a canister.
    The aperture has eight blades.
I don't have a c-mount adapter yet, it is on the way.

No caps, condition is good. Some dust inside, but overall clean.
Actually it will fit in some canisters if the rubber grip wouldn't stick out...
    Filter size is 27mm.

When buying it new you get caps. See post 27 above.
Now those caps are more or less meaningless: I replaced the front cap with a hood (sometimes this lens flares) and the rear cap with a C-mount adapter and a 4/3 cap.

There are also small screws on the aperture and focusing rings making it possible to lock them (for CCTV use). They don't make us anything good so out they go. Then one can replace just one of these with a longer lock screw (I don't know the name of these, longer chromed things you can tighten or untighten using your fingers only) in effect working as a tap making it easier to handle the little lens.

    Just got a Cosmicar 25mm f1.4, older version - 6 blades.
    A few quick tests.

    Full picture

    Cosmicar - Center @f/1.4

    Computer - Center @f1.3

    Lumix 14-45 (~25mm) - Center @f4.8

    Cosmicar - Corner

    Computar - Corner

    Lumix 14-45 (~25mm) - Corner

    Cosmicar - Corner @f/8

    Computar - Corner @f/8

    Lumix 14-45 (~25mmm) - Corner @f/8

The centers are all similar in sharpness, less so in contrast.
The corners are where the real differences show up.

Can only post 10 pics, full frame for last shot in next post.
