My 4/3rds system lost its portability?

Started off nice and small with the 14-45mm standard lens. Then the 7-14mm a must for wide angle. Ok still pretty portable and compact. Then add the 20mm for low light and narrow depth of field-- and then the 45-200mm for the voyeur type street shooting.

Ok last but not least external flash Metz 36 AF, which is quite a bit bigger than i expected... Geez.

    I hear you!

And I just added a second body so I wouldn't have to switch lenses as often!

Re: My 4/3rds system lost its portability?

I completely understand and can relate to this problem.

I started with the GF-1 & 14-45 kit which was tiny.
Added the 45-200 - so far not too bad and an easy fit in a Billingham Small Hadley.
Then the 20/1.7 so I thought I'd try the DMW-BAG1 case which works well including the charger.
Now that I've added the 7-14mm it looks like another Artisan & Artist Image Smith (ACAM-1000) will now be needed to house it all.

Btw, the GCAM-1000 leather version of the A&A Image Smith is gorgeous. I just got this for my M9 outfit and it's lust and first sight/feel

Look on the bright side, it's still a LOT smaller and more portable than the 3x Pelican 1500 cases, Think Tank Airport Security roller bag and Lowepro Pro-Trekker II that fill up the back of my Land Rover when taking the Nikon gear for a ride ...

    I have the same problem too after I got the G1 + GH1 + 14-140 + 14-45 + 20f1.7.

To make matters worse, I have bought the Leica M, Leica R, Contax C/Y & Canon EOS adapters.

You should see the ridiculous set up of my GH1 + EOS adpater + 1.4X + 500f4IS on Sidekick + RRS BH55 + Gitzto 1325 . Luckily I am not planning to use any flash with it. Otherwise, add an external flash + Better Beamer .

I am so glad i sold my manual contax and leica lenses, and more importantly the aperture cannot be set on the canon EOS lenses by the GF1 itself.. Saves me the adapters and carrying around even more lenses. I do need to find a good bag though. I guess i should search for what the M8/M9 folks use

Actually my 'normal' travel light set is my GH1 with the 20f1.7 mounted. In addition, I just carry my 14-140 + CP + ND. Nice small package fits in my small pack and have lots of room for GPS + sunglasses + hat. That will cover outdoor and indoor shots of either video or stills. The more I use the 20f1.7, the more I like it.

Re: My 4/3rds system lost its portability?

I have a couple of different small bags that can easily handle this kit (which I find a great combo to travel with - add a gitzo traveler tripod and it is a blissfully small light kit):

    GH1 or GF1 or both
20, 14-140, 7-14, one more lens probably 45 macro will occupy this spot.

I'm not one for padded bags, I just put the lenses in neoprene pouches or wraps so I tend to use things not meant for photography

This is the real joke -- I'm using the Domke J803, the same bag I used for my M kit! However, one big difference is I do have a bunch of room left over for things like a water bottle and books

I think the Domke bags are great. HOwever the J803 is awful big. The Timbuk2's look interesting but would want to see in person. What about the Domke F-8

Re: My 4/3rds system lost its portability?

I have 3 Domkes--the F3x is too big, too deep. The F6 worked well as a travel bag--2 bodies 5 lenses. other stuff--then I carried the Terraclime 100 for the day---maybe both bodies w/2 lenses, or 1 body several lenses. Still--even the F6 ('Little Bit Smaller'-Classic) was relatively light if I would even consider carrying the whole shebang!

The 5xb is also nice---works well for multiple bodies/lenses or 1 body, several lenses.

Re: My 4/3rds system lost its portability?

    Hi

remember, the weight isn't so different in only the bodies.

    G1 body

    OM-10 body

cameras placed on same spot, taking camera unmoved on tripod... not much in it is there?

but compared to the 10D ...

But If you want to drag along all the lenses it starts getting heavy again as after all we're only talking 400g difference between the bodies right?

    :-)

My attention was drawn to this when taking my FD 300 to a conference recently and picking up my backpack to leave the house with my laptop, charger, documents, G1 + kit and the 300 in it ... heft in a small bag!

Re: My 4/3rds system lost its portability?

I just bought my G1 a couple of weeks ago with two lenses. Since then, I've bought a PK to m4/3 adapter, an Yashica 135mm 2.8, a Canon FD 50mm 1.4 (still need to buy the adapter)...so I'm already considering getting the EP-1 (body only) and the Pana 20mm 1.7 for portability. It never ends!!!

Red face Re: My 4/3rds system lost its portability?

In the beginning there was the E-1,

and with it came the 14-54, 50-200 and FL-50.

and the bag that carried it all was small.

And then I bought the 90-250mm lens (and sold the 50-200).

On and on........I keep thinking that every bag I get is large enough to carry everything. But this saturday I will need to take three bags to cover a convention and later a college football game.

The main problem is that most of the space now is with all of the flash equipment (and batteries) that I use.

It never turns out like we think it will!

It seems to me everyone collects one or more ancillary pieces of gear. Mine just happens to be bags, equipment belts and flash units (9 now).

A friend of mine collects tripods......more than 20 I would guess.

I would hazard a guess have a few camera straps.............just to find the "perfect one"

    I am a gear-whore I admit it!

That's a nice kit Mark. I'm half way there with 14-45 and 20/1.7. 7-14 is on order and the 45-200 I haven't searched for one yet.

I second Terry's suggestion of the Terraclime 100. I bought the A&A insert ( smaller of the two ) and use this bag for my MP kit, but I think if I take the insert out and use the lens pouches it should all fit just fine.

Now IF I were buying a new bag for the GF1, it would be the Domke F803 in the new scruffy "waxwear" finish:

    Sounds like a nice setup.

So far I have resisted and am keeping the 20 mm glued to the GF1. I have the EVF, but leave that off most of the time. Everything fits in a small case on my hip.

I'm using a nice little Fogg B-laika (now looking pleasantly used).

    It seems to have:
    EP1, 20 f1.7, 45 macro
    M9, 28 'cron, WATE+frankenfinder.

    Snug fit!

    Just this guy you know

The Domke looks nice but awfully large at least via the dimensions on the website. I want something that will easily fit into my carryon bag and leave room for all of my clothing. I guess it is quite thin so could fit under or on top of clothing. I wonder if they have them at KSP so i can take a look

It's the same size as a regular f803 which Keeble does have in stock. I was in last week and they didn't have the waxwear one yet.

Jack, that is a great looking bag, maybe the first to tear my eyes off of the saddleback leather satchels.

I started with the GF1+20/1.7+EVF. Still there =) Maybe a 14-45 later if I can find it cheap. Or get an EOS adapter so I can use my Super Tak 50 and play around w/ the 50-135 on it =)

I'm struggling to find a bag though. I stick it in my small timbuk2+tenba insert for everyday-to-work, but I have nothing for it if I just am going out somewhere. I ended up buying the optech d-small pouch. We'll see how that works.

Re: My 4/3rds system lost its portability?

Well, since I can relate on multiple levels, probably time to finally de-lurk.

First, a thanks to all as this forum has been tremendously helpful with my recent m4/3 decision-making process. I've had an LX3 since it was released as my compact to match my D700 -- very fond of it, but have always felt a little restricted by the ISO limitations (spoiled by the D700) and, for the life of me, even though I also shoot with a TLR and some LF, I just *really* missed a viewfinder. I think it is because my first film camera "love" was a rangefinder... I seriously thought about going with the GF1, but once I realized I would want the EVF, I decided to take advantage of the good prices on the G1 and bought one last weekend. Love at first, uh, fondle (I bought it sight unseen).

Current kit is.. the 14-45 kit lens. I have adapters on the way to use my old 55mm Macro Nikkor (can't wait), just scored a good deal on an OM 50mm f1.4 and since my husband is abroad this week... am planning on picking up a nice used OM 100mm F2.8 (would prefer the 85mm F2, but pricey). Will definitely add the 20mm f1.7 (husband's next trip maybe ), and am on the fence about the 45-200. Very spoiled by my fast Nikon glass, not a lot of patience for the slower stuff.

And bags-- I am terribly embarrassed to admit that I own probably *every* bag mentioned in this thread. I'm not kidding, it's a disorder. Actually, whenever I start to muse about getting a new camera my husband's first comment is invariably "what bag are you getting"? Given that I already own the Terraclime 100, the Domke 5xb AND the F-803 in Waxwear (GREAT bag, BTW)-- for the first time I may not need a new bag for a camera purchase. May not stop me though, and hell, might be nice to protect the G1 with a small Zing... this is hopeless.

Maybe living close to B&H is a bad thing.

Now back to deciding if I will forgo a protective filter for the first time ever....

Thanks Terry-- what a cool bag! Oh no! Not again...

The funny thing is that I basically own only 2 purses, never liked carrying one.. go figure!

This maybe pushing my feminine side a little too far.

Looks like it was shot with a M8 without filters . LOL

    Guy,
Your picture is actually a printed on fabric version of a magnified view of the GF1 viewfinder.

    Here is the manly exterior

I don't know about a Domke 5xB but I'm pretty sure that it would fit in a Billingham Small Hadley if you don't mind the 20/1.7 and flash being in the outside pockets ... allegedly

You've got me there ... that Domke's very affordable isn't it.

My Billingham is free to me as I found it hiding out in the home for abandoned camera bags in my closet. Not the cheapest bags to buy new in the US, that's true.

I tried something similar for you--used the Oly 9-18 which is similar in size. Its very very tight with just the lenses and I don't think I could get a flash in also. It wouldn't be how I would want to work from a bag. I like the 5xb best with body and 2 lenses best. The front pocket is very flat and works best for a smallish things. No back pocket (a slot to run a belt through instead).
