    Lots of new Panny firmware....wooohoooo

    GF1
    7-14
    14-45
    14-140
    45-200
    20

But the biggest news might be the manual focus with legacy lenses going to one button press. I don't have my GF1 back from RRS yet so someone else needs to be the tester

    Here is the link

    http://panasonic.jp/support/global/c...oad/index.html

    Here is the text:

Enabled the MF Assist operation by pressing the Rear dial, when the lens which supports only MF operation is attached, including the case any lens is mounted on M Mount Adaptor(DMW-MA2M) or R Mount Adaptor(DMW-MA3R).
Please make sure to set [SHOOT W/O LENS] to [ON] in [CUSTOM MENU].

Improved AF(Auto Focus) performance in Motion Picture recording.

Improved the picture quality for high sensitivity photo shooting.

Improved the performance of AWB (Auto White Balance).

Improved the representation in the human face related scene modes([PORTRAIT], [SOFT SKIN], [NIGHT PORTRAIT] and [BABY]).

Improved the AE program (combination of the aperture and the shutter speed) in the scenery related scene modes([SCENERY] and [ARCHITECTURE]).

    So Ron,
The way I read this is you push the back control dial. Correct? Sort of makes sense because you aren't ever setting two things at once with a manual lens.

That's right Terry. Press in on the dial and it does what the previous two step operation did, then you can turn the dial to increase the zoom. Very cool!

Now they need to update the G1 firmware for the same function.

It's nice to know that someone at Panasonic is actually listening to what their customers want. I'm impressed.

OK so if you are in manual mode with a legacy lens and you want to first change the shutter speed and then focus, what do you do?

I just tried that with a 50 Summicron mounted via the Panasonic M adapter.

In Manual, pressing the dial goes to focus assist. Turning the dial first changes the shutter speed. Aperture is changed on the lens.

In Aperture priority, turning the dial first will change exposure compensation; pressing the dial goes to focus assist.

Great. Sounds like a great implementation - one that none of us thought of when the G1 was first released.

AWB in artificial light on GF1 is much improved. Now checking to see if high ISO is any better.

Too bad they (still) don't allow you to change the lowest shutter speed with Auto ISO though...

Hmm, makes me wonder if this quicker MF option will only be on the GF1 and not the other bodies.

Somehow, I don't think they are going to bypass the other cameras (but I have no knowledge of this). I can't imagine that the front wheel couldn't be programmed similarly to the rear wheel. Can your Panny rep find out any info?

Go out for the evening and all--------well, it did all break loose LOL. It surely looks terrific. Hope they can implement this all for the G1 also. Terrific news. Too much wine this evening to start playing with downloads and upgrades LOL.

Not bad, not bad at all. Now I hope they do the same for the G1 and the GH1.

After having used the little G20/1.7 for some time I have decided to keep it. I wonder if the update will do anything for it also for still imaging?

No, you have to update the lenses by placing the files individually on the card. If you try to have a couple of files for various lenses on the card the camera returns the 'No valid picture to play' message.

Re: Lots of new Panny firmware....wooohoooo

    Hi,

did they mention anything about the improvements on the lens firmware ?

Also, the Panasonic site mentions it is necessary to have the camera updated to the latest firmware before updating the lenses. That would mean the end of using 3th party accus if you want to update your lenses, wouldn't it ?

So, I'll upgrade the lenses only if the update brings me IMPORTANT improvement in IQ !

Funny... we campaigned for the fix in the G1 last year... The GF1 ships without it, and then gets fixed first - still waiting for the G1 fix!!!!!

This is just irritating. Close, but no cigar

    Kind Regards

Possibly silly question, but I am a technology kindergartner so please put on your bunny puppet hand for me and help me get through this.

I have an EP-1 and Panasonic 20. Can I still update the 20 without a Panasonic body? If you could point me to a page with the how to do this I would be very appreciative (but may come back with more questions, I will of course raise my hand first and wait to be called on though ) Thanks.

Wow, that looks easy. I didn't realize that Panasonic and Olympus were that friendly. M43 is an open system, I guess this is one of the benefits.

So it looks like I have to open the Olympus Master software and just click things until I find the update features again.

Just mount each lens on your E-P1, connect via the USB cable to your machine running Olympus Master or Studio and update via the internet.

Make sure your battery is fully charged first though

I just finished mine (GF1, 20, 14-45, 45-200). I only checked 2 things---the ability to use one 'button' (rear dial) for MF assist--works like a charm. I also tried continuous AF with the 20 for video--they didn't mention that the noise of the focus was diminished, but it is greatly. The continuous AF works nicely.

I didn't check for AWB--another thing that I will check, but the biggie for me was the one button MF assist since I use MF lenses a good bit--very very nice. I do hope they can implement it for the G1 also.

This will be my weekend project. It seems like an easy process. I didn't realize that the "Open Standard" M43 operates in is so open. This is a good thing. The EP-1 firmware update was very easy so I am sure this one will go smoothly too.

And with an AF lens mounted, it stays as it is now so no schlogging settings back and forth

As for the lens updates themselves, AF seems faster and more positive at the stops, even the 20. Didn't notice much change in focus noise.

It seems the already fine AF on 14-45 is now even better. I didn't find any difference in the 20mm AF speed or the focusing noise. I don't use the video, so no comments regarding that.

Where I noticed the difference in the focusing noise was in a short little video clip I ran with continuous AF on the 20--before you would hear it make a noise as it came into focus and if you used a 1/2 click to focus, it was quite noticeable. The noise on playback of the focus seems quite less to me, but I'd have to check it against some older files. I did notice a difference in the 14-45 on the last update and this seemed similar for the 20. I don't video much--just a bit of experimenting so its not very important to me.

I still haven't checked better higher ISOs as some have mentioned--or the better AWB.

Re: Lots of new Panny firmware....wooohoooo

I do believe that the AWB, especially in artificial (tungsten) light is much improved.

However, my high ISO shots still look the same. Unfortunately, I did not do any test (baseline) shots before I updated GF1 firmware, so what I just said is highly subjective as I have nothing concrete to compare it to.

The GF1 pre/post firmware update is usually decent up to ISO 800-1000 for me. At 1250 and 1600, it gets quite noisy, especially in the shadows.

Can anyone else comment on high ISO with this update?

    Thanks Terry

Updated the G1, 14-45 kit and 45-200 tele this morning. No worries.

Upgrading lens firmware is operationally identical to the body firmware except you must have the correct lens mounted. You must treat each lens/body firmware version upgrade as a completely separate operation and not try to combine them. Also note, it is necessary to upgrade the body firmware before any lens firmware upgrades. The annoying part is waiting for the battery to fully charge.

First C1 announces support for the Panasonic raw format then all the body/lens firmware is upgraded. Are you really Terry or is this Santa Claus.

I don't believe that's a true statement. I recently bought the G1 with the two kit lenses. They all came at f/w 1.0. Since I did not want to loose the ability to use 3rd party batteries, I decided not to upgrade the body but I did upgrade the two lenses to 1.1 without any problems. Body and lens are two different entities and there is no check between the two that forces the body to be upgraded before the lens.

This is a direct quote from the Panasonic Firmware upgrade site:

In advance to any lens firmware update, please make sure that your camera body firmware is latest.

I don't mind to play around with software but not when I update firmware. No room for error here. May be it is just me.

Re: Lots of new Panny firmware....wooohoooo

As I mentionned in my earlier post, Panasonic wants you to have the latest camera firmware before updating any lens firmware.

Whether lens firmware update does work (well) without body firmware update is a risk I am not willing to take !

So, I decided that I will not update my lenses anymore, since I am happy with the results now !

    I confirm what Kevin said.

    ~5 Euro/battery (shipped).

This is a typo, isn't it: "G1"... I can't see an update for the G1 or GH1 yet.

How do I 'transfer' the new firmware files to the camera?

Can a patient person guide me through the steps I need to take to update my brand new GF1 and 20mm, using my Macbook and the internet directly (ie, missing out the card reader stage)? I can download the two relevant Panasonic files to the desktop okay...but then what do I do??? 'Unzip' them, whatever that means? 'Transfer' them...how exactly? With the USB-tethered camera menu open at what page, etc, etc?

I've never done a firmware upgrade before, and have no intuitive digital talent whatsoever, so explain every stage if you can bear to! Thanks in anticipation...

If you click on the file on the Panasonic site, it will download to your mac. Generally, the settings on your computer will automatically unzip the file and give you a .bin file on your computer.
Once you have the bin file on your computer...
1.Make sure you have fully charged the battery. Don't bother trying the update if you didn't just take the battery from the charger
    2. Plug the camera into the computer in the same way you would to get your pictures off the computer
    3. Open the finder (little face icon). You will see the camera as a device that is hooked up to the computer click once on that and you will see the files on the sd card....just leave that alone for the moment
    4. If you have an up to date mac you will find the .bin file in a folder called downloads on the dock. move the .bin file to the the area where you see the camera files in step 3.
    5. Eject camera from the Mac.
    6. Turn camera off
    7. Turn camera on and hit the play button
    8. say yes to the update.
    9. Do the exact same thing for the lens.

If this is not clear, send me a PM and I can walk you through it over the phone.
