DMW-FL500 flash with my G1

I'm using a Lumix DMW-FL500 flash with my G1 and I notice that the AF assist lamp on the flash unit never operates, only the lamp on the camera.

I have tried switching off the AF assist lamp on the camera via the menu and making sure the flash unit lamp is switched on via its mode select but still no luck

Any Ideas

Neither Panasonic nor Olympus current support the flash units' AF Assist lamps with their Micro-FourThirds bodies. There's no great benefit in using the flash's AF Assist lamp instead of the body's, in the case of the G1 anyway.
