Fun with Contax G lenses on m43

Post your images taken with Contax G lenses adapted to m43 bodies here.

Here is one taken today with the Contax G 35mm f/2 Planar mounted on a G1 (IR). This particular G lens is my favorite walk around MF lens for casual shooting.

    Hi Carl,
Many thanks for your kind comments. If many of us submit our images taken with fine Contax G lenses, then this thread will thrive under your leadership! Best, Leica 77.

Just a few taken at the Chinese Cemetery in Manoa, Honolulu. I was just getting warmed up when it started to rain... All with the 45/2 at f5.6. I used 'auto tone' in the new LR3 and like the result.

    Stefan,
Very nice images. I think that I see a few rain drops coming down in the last shot. I'm also using LR3 and I'm very pleased with the processing and printing features.

Re: Fun with Contax G lenses on m43

    Hi Carl,
I discovered this thread and decided to copy parts of some of my posts in the thread about adapters. I hope you don't mind this cross-posting.

    =======
    From post 182081:

I have been working a lot lately, the weather is grey and so on, but just for the sake of it I can post this high ISO handheld thing taken in bad light at a mall:

Doesn't look like anything special at all but here is a 100% crop:

If that can be done handheld at f/2, 1/45 and close distance I think it confirms my initial impression of the lens. A short but boring test series taken at home in better light was of course better.

    From post 182853:
More initial results. They aren't surprising but it is good to learn that all I've heard is true.

    G1, Contax G Planar 45/2:

A Zeiss made in japan, very sharp, as it often is with Zeiss lenses. When running a series of images through IMA-test the lens performed as good as other classic very good lenses (comparable to OM90/2Macro (sharper than Leica Elmarit-R 100/2.8 Macro APO) and a tad better than the OM50/2Macro and ZD50/2 Macro also if not visible in small prints).
The borders are sharp at f/2 and f/2.8, then they are very sharp.
The corners are sharp at f/2.8 and very sharp at f/5.6.
As IMA-test targets are even more boring than USAF charts I post the later:

    Very good

The lens also passed a simple flare test. Not only passed, it performed among the best I have seen. When mounting a filter it got worse but not worse than one can predict. Below is the f/2 result, no filter:

    Very very good

In real life it means one doesn't need to worry. It's great with a late standard construction. Here is a simple sample from a short walk yesterday, shooting distance may have been around 8 meters or so:

Wide open, in a back yard of an office, overcast. I know, Barnack says "No statues" but...

And finally, a 100% crop taken from the image above:

    You judge

It's like having a new reference lens.

    From post 189511:

    "Looking good?" G1, Planar G 45/2, @f/2

    regards,

    /Jonas

    That's nice Carl.
What is it making the 35mm your walk-about favourite? Just the FOV?

Thanks Jonas. Yes, primarily the FOV. The 45 is also nice, but FOV is often a bit too tight. Thanks also for re-posting your shots from the adapter thread. Would be nice if we could get them all moved over here to have them all in one thread.

    Hi Carl -
I wonder how you shot this impressing IR-picture.
It does not look like you used a IR-Filter, because in that case exposure-time would have been too long for the maybe moving birds in the scenery.

    AlterMann,

My G1 camera was converted for dedicated IR use by Precision Camera. They remove the AA/IR cut filter package in front of the sensor and replaced it with a 715nm IR pass filter. Several people on this forum are using converted IR m43 cameras. See Jack's thread here and this thread for more images.

. . . . . thank you Klaus for your kind words. I do love the 45/2 & 90/2.8 Contax G lens! The quality of the Carl Zeiss Contax G lenses for the price you pay for them from the used marketplace is unbelievable. If push came to shove and I had to live with only a couple of manual lenses, these two would garnish considerable consideration as the ones to keep.

Re: Fun with Contax G lenses on m43

To celebrate my new Metabone adapter I give you the three first shots with it (or the second to the fourth ones... the first one wasn't really possible to even look at).

Above: Planar 45/2 wide open. No, it's not an APO lens but here it managed OK. Handheld and focused at the front wood.

Above: Elisabeth (from the "Looking good?" image above. Hmm. Well, she likes to spend part of her life with me so at least unique then.) For the first time I had no problems tune the focusing really quick. The Planar 45 wide open, handheld and sharper than we, or she, really need.

    and finally;

Above: The image is posted in aRGB mode and is a try to show red colors with the G1 and the Planar 45 (profiled at the time with X-rite Passport). I'm not very interested in flowers, and sure enough, I burned them somewhat despite holding the exposure back, but I know these would have been more overall orange with my Canon gear.

    Cheers,

    /Jonas

Jonas, three lovely shots with the 45/2 lens!

Lovely bokeh in the first shot with the glasses and the second portrait shot. It is a sharp lens and certainly brings out the full detail in the image.

    Thanks for sharing!

Hopefully you will continue to update with photos taken with the use of the Metabone's adaptor and let us know your opinion about the use of a period of time.

Re: Fun with Contax G lenses on m43

Dan, thank you, but I think you are too kind. Those are just snaps as I tried my new adapter. But OK, they show the bokeh can be good also at f/2 sometimes (also if I find it too harsh in the majority of situations and find it better to stop down to f/2.8), that the lens is "sharp" enough (and actually measures better than the Zuiko Digital 50/2 Macro when I compared them). The lastimage should probably not have been posted at all. Blown reds (not a lot of the but some parts of petals) is not god for demonstrating red colors, and maybe posting the image as an aRGB image was stupid. I checked it later in a not color managed browser... yikes.

Hmm, that was a lot of brackets.

I'll get back if I happen to get something demonstrating a feature o the lens.

    Cheers,

    /Jonas

Thank you Leica77 and Dan. The automated photomerge function in CS5 is so good that stitching is almost effortless. If you need big 20-40 MP files for large prints these 12 MP Gs can easily produce the high res files from 2-4 stitched files.

Blueberries are behind schedule this year in the Northwest due to the weather we have had this spring and summer. . . . . . but they are here now!

    Dan,
Nice shots of the rugged peak in the clouds. We have just the opposite experience here in the NE with blueberries (and other plants as well) and have been picking since early July.

Re: Fun with Contax G lenses on m43

Here is a mountain picture from Sunday (Contax G 45mm). Not sure whether the tones are too light or too dark, because I developped the picture on my laptop and depending upon the inclination of the screen, they can look either way.

The 45mm gives me much sharper pictures than the 90mm. Not sure whether it is the lense itself or the difficulty of focusing with shaking hands using the pens.

And well here is a fireworks picture. Of course it would have been better if the fireworks weren't masking the second castle, but my window stands where it stands and there were not many other framing possibilities.

    Annna,

A beautiful shot of the fireworks in Sion and nice image of the rugged mountains. I have friends living near the little village of Arbaz and have visited your beautiful region a few times.
