Even so, if you see the side by side comparison with the EP3 file at the same resolution the improvement is crystal clear. But I do agree that its too soon to come to any conclusive observations.

BTW, does anyone know of any app that will open ODM ORF files on a PC?

No - why on earth can't they use DNG files like Leica and Pentax

    Agree.

Steve Huff and other reviewers say the GX1 high ISO surpasses that of the EP3. So I'll look forward to comparisons with the OM-D, even though I don't shoot much beyond 800. I certainly prefer the GF/GX form factor. Just something about the mini-DSLR design that I don't like.

There may be others, but try Picasa...the price is good

One thing that I dont get is that the OMD sensor is basically the G3 and the GX1s sensor. So how come it can have better iso and dynamic range if youre shooting RAW? This would only make sense if you were shooting JPEGS or if the sensor was some how different.

Ive tried RawTherapee, XnView and the Olympus software and none will open the ORF files. This is becoming increasingly weird.

    Hi Rafa
unfortunately, I think you'll be unlikely to find anything which will open these ORF files - presumably people are working on it at the moment, very often Adobe are first with support, but very rarely before the camera is actually released.
Aperture still doesn't support the NEX7 files.
There may be quite a wait

Repeat......... the answer for the moment might be Picasa (the free downloadable application). It has opened some of the new orf samples for me - you can make minor adjustments or save them as jpegs for use in LR, PS or whatever. At least it's a starting point.........

Who said the OM-D sensor is basically the G3 and GX1's sensor? Olympus doesn't say that, and in fact they said it's a completely different sensor. The fact that it's a re-worked G3/GX1 sensor is pure speculation and conjecture at this point AFAIK.

    Hi Keith
Indeed, we mustn't . . it's possible that they were the first to stump up for DNG (before Leica and Pentax) . . . or could it have been Epson with the R-D1 so it was inexcusable for me to miss them out.

You must have a corrupted file then, because I was able to open the raw sample in both Raw Therapee and Olympus Viewer (I downloaded their last version in both cases).

The raw samples I got were put up by a French Website, but they took them down after a while (Olympus didn't want to see samples files other than jpegs of 1600 pixels in the longest side).

The results were quite different in Raw Therapee and in Olympus viewer. Those of Raw Therapee were very dark, but supported a push in the shadows very well. It really seems that there is a progress in the sensor or the data extracted from the sensor.

Ive actually decided to wait a bit more. The OMD sounds like a winner but I want to hear and see more before making a thousand buck investment. Plus there are rumors saying that Olys next camera will be a pen with the OMDs sensor, which would suit my shooting style way more.

I'd like to see a minor redesign on the Pen, to do away with the fiddly rotating dial around the menu button... replace it with a top dial or something. The design needs to mature with each release.

    Cheers

    Brian

I wish I had time - but unfortunately I don't this year - free tickets abound, but time doesn't (we're off to China in a fortnight and things need sorting first!).

Rubbish - but we're going to visit our son who's working there. . . and his mandarin at least exists (although I guess it's mostly bedroom mandarin).

. . . . and yes, I'd rather be going to China as well
