    Adapter Availability?

Hi Guys! Anybody know about the availability of a G1-Leica M adaptor in the USA? JM doesn't have them yet, Rayqual emailed saying they'd be available via cameraquest in February. Any other available options? I can't wait to try some of my good glass on this thing!

    Thanks!

    Re: Adapter Availability?

Last I heard, the Novoflex would be delivered to their US distributor (HP Marketing) the first week of January. I was told by HP they will drop ship for their dealers, so they should be available right after that.

I called B&H during the week. The guy didn't know about the adapter but he is very interested in the G1 so was going to look into it. Who are some of the other Novoflex dealers in the US?

    Re: Adapter Availability?

When I spoke to HP a few weeks ago, they kept saying talk to B&H or Adorama. I then talked to B&H and they knew nothing about the product and said they had no idea if they would stock it or even take special orders for it, "keep checking our website." That's why I ordered direct from Novoflex.

I'd recommend calling HP and getting a dealer list.

    Re: Adapter Availability?

My recommendation is to call HP Marketing on Monday and get a list of dealers. I'm betting there is a small specialty dealer (perhaps Photovillage) that could order and have HP drop ship, arriving earlier than a direct shipment from Germany. Plus you'll be able to order in USD instead of euros. HP told me they drop ship most orders.

That being said, here is the direct order info:

    NOVOFLEX Praezisionstechnik GmbH
    Lydia Ernst - Sales -

    Brahmsstr. 7, 87700 Memmingen
    Tel.: +49 8331 88888 Fax: +49 8331 47174

Have looked thru the adapter quality based on pictures only and it looks like the Rayqual adaptor has better built. Anyone with comments if my assumption is inaccurate?

    Re: Adapter Availability?

Not having personally seen the Rayqual, I can't comment on the build quality except it looks fine in photos. The Novoflex looks like a quality piece to me, looks good, feels solid, fits into the G1 bayonet perfectly, and lenses fit just like they do on a camera body.

The 'throat' in the Rayqual appears to be smaller than the Novoflex, and the lens release button is recessed on the Novoflex. I'm not sure about the Rayqual, but the Novoflex has a pin that prevents the adapter from being removed from the G1 with the lens attached. I'm thinking of filing down the pin.

Leaving the adaptor attached to body? yes.. that would be what I would like to do as well, leaving adpator attached to camera.

Is anybody besides me surprised that the Rayqual adapters haven't turned up on eBay yet? I've seen pictures shot of and with them, so evidently they're available in Asia, but CameraQuest says they won't have them until late January at the soonest. You'd think somebody might step into this gap to profit from would-be early adopters.

So the adapters that CameraQuest will have are the Rayqual ones? I see nothing on the web sit that identifies his supplier.

Im on the waiting list with CQ, but if Ill have to wait that long, Ill withdraw from it.... Novoflex seem to be shipping already.

    Re: Adapter Availability?

Kindai is listed as 'importer/distributor': http://www.jpvaa.jp/member/028.html

Kindai web page: http://tinyurl.com/8bjyx9 (Note Novoflex logo.)

    Rayqual web page: http://tinyurl.com/3sbqyq

I've been assuming CameraQuest is reselling the RayQual. Not sure why it's taking so long, unless he's just being conservative on the delivery date.

    Re: Adapter Availability?

It's probably taking longer so batches can be made sans logo.

If you look at the Rayqual site and compare to other adapters on the Cameraquest site, they look identical except for missing Rayqual logos. The font and part numbers are identical.

    One example:

Cameraquest Nikon F to Canon EOS:

Rayqual Nikon F to Canon EOS:

Interestingly, the following Rayqual and Kindai adapters appear to be identical except for silkscreen:

    Rayqual:

    Kindai:

My guess is that Rayqual is the actual manufacturer and labels them for Kindai or no-name for Cameraquest.

If I'm interpreting the english translation of the Rayqual site correctly, suggests that the first production run of the m4/3-m adapter has sold out.

One of the better local camera stores (Leo's Camera) in Vancouver had 4 Novoflex adapters on Friday but they were going fast.

    Best regards Terry.

Can anyone tell me what the Novoflex adapters have been running? Leo's is quoting $288 CDN or $234 US. Is that a fair price?

I just called Leo's as well before reading this. I didn't get it. I thought I could wait a few weeks for the Cameraquest adapter and save the $50-$60

If you're in the UK SpeedGraphic appear to have them in stock:

    http://www.speedgraphic.co.uk/prod.a...Thirds+Adaptor

Given the weakness of the Pound at the moment it might even make sense for those of you the other side of the Pond to import - 125 ~= $175

Good tip, Kiloran; thank you! I had planned to call Novoflex as soon as they reopen after the holidays, but this one was even cheaper than Novoflex themselves...

So, my order is now with them. Cant wait to get that adapter and start testing....

It arrived today so I would hope yours will be with you very soon. Its nicely built but the instructions are poor - make sure you pay careful attention to aligning adapters and lenses - see my "Jammed Novoflex adapter" thread (fortunately now resolved after 3 anxious hours

Lol, just a single sheet of German/English instructions that were less than clear, hence me almost trashing the camera

All fine now and looking forward to playing with the camera in decent light tomorrow, its first serious task will be to take the eBay shots for my D60 kit + Sigma 50mm. Just need to work out which ancient LTM lens I use for the purpose

    Re: Adapter Availability?

is it just the scotsman in me... but are the prices being quoted for these adaptors not just a little bit outrageous. They are not highly complex mechanisms... no expensive tooling needed... probably just a computer controlled lathe that I am sure populate the chinese factories and a minimum of labour assembly

I understand fully the laws of supply and demand and the need to make a profit... but if adaptors for other lenses/bodies are in the $10-30 bracket, with even obscure things like contax to canon with AF confirm for less than $40 are available on ebay... then $200+ does seem like a rip off for what is fundamentally the same thing... a couple of bits of brass or aluminium screwed together.

    ok

    rant off

    peace and love

i think you grossly underestimate the difficulty in making one of these adapters and the tight tolerances required. by comparison, i paid $250 to have the hose changed on my dishwasher, $400 to have the lamp changed on my car. by contrast, it takes a $200k machine and an extremely skilled operator to machine the adapter not to mention the difficulty in getting it right, and it is a speculative venture on top of that.
I am among the ever shrinking breed of craftsmen who still takes pride in quality, tricky work, and hopefully is making a living at it.
it seems many people today are jaded, having seen amazing devices, like an I-phone, for relatively little denero. how could my dishwasher hose replacement be so expensive?

His M mount shipped or his LTM?

I didn't realize the M mounts were ready. Bummer. Please let me know when I should pony up on the M mount one. The LTM is silky smooth!

Most people do grossly underestimate how much time, effort, and money go into product development and manufacturing.

Being in the product design business, working with mechanical and electrical engineers, I'm actually amazed how relatively inexpensive things are.

But I'm also amazed at how cheap things can be built in Asia. Every MacBook chassis currently built (as of the new models in October) for example, are machined. One by one. If one looks at the volume that Apple produces, one can only imagine how many CNC machines it would take, working 24 hours a day, to turn out a few hundred thousand of these every month.

I received two Cirrus adapters in the mail today -- M42 to 4/3, and Minolta MD to 4/3. The quality is excellent. The price for both, including shipping from China, was $56.

There's two main things you need to consider when comparing costs:

    (1) The economics of large numbers. Millions of Macbooks vs maybe 100 adapters that John will sell mean that for him development and administration make a much bigger share on top of the production cost.

    (2) Cost of living and wages in different parts of the world. Remember China is still cheap in comparison to any 1st world country.

Of course, but remember, the millions of MacBooks are machined one by one; they aren't injection molded which is the usual method for something that sells in the millions.

And yes, when an employee is only paid a few cents a day...which is why all those iPhones and Macbooks are built in China.

BTW, the Minolta MD - 4/3 adapter I spoke about from Cirrus is the same one that CameraQuest sells for $175 (with the allen wrench, etc.)

Back to the earlier post, if 4/3 becomes a reasonably big seller, China will make these adapters and they'll be $30 or so. That's just reality.

    Re: Adapter Availability?

I just received my Panasonic DMW-MA1 adapter and I already had my Fotodiox adapter for my Nikon glass. Put my 50/1.8 on and I am very impressed. I can't wait to take some shots outdoors with it and see how it renders the image. From what I can see so far, it has a much shallower depth of field wide open than the kit lens so I will be interested in comparing. Focus, even without the 10x being used seems pretty easy.

Jack - I'll certainly bring my adapter to the workshop, and let others try it out while we are there.

And if you have problems with the one from CameraQuest, you kvetch to Stephen and he sends you another one. If you have problems with the one from China... well, how's your Mandarin?

I've bought some nicely-made adapters from China and others that were so rough that I couldn't use them without fear of damaging the camera. The real problem is that regardless of the brand name on the box (or website), you never know what OEM factory will make the next one you buy: the first one you get might be great, and then a few weeks later you might order another of the same model from the same vendor and get one that's kack.
