    LUMIX GM1

In early October Panasonic will launch the world smallest mirrorless camera LUMIX GM1 with interchangeable
    lens mount
. Itís going to have the size of the Sony RX100 but with a large FT sensor inside.
It will also get rid of the mechanical shutter to save some space. It uses a fully electronic shutter
instead! As kit lens there will be a new 12-32mm pancake zoom.

If they want to make it thinner, then they should get rid of of AA/UV/IR stack of glass which is ~5mm thick!!

The mechanical shutter would hardly save them any space, in comparison.

Sounds interesting enough for me to hold off my GX7 purchase until I see this new one. Electronic shutter sounds awesome, but will it be a "global" shutter (i.e. no electronic distortions with movement)?

    Re: LUMIX GM1

I am actually very interested to see the final product they come out with here. A camera like this with the version II F1.7 pancake makes for a very interesting proposition.

The question to me is, did they go "Mom/Dad/Pet mode/Baby mode" or LX5/LX7 ethos here. Handling to me matters a lot. If they have the "powershot wheel of death" in the back, that's minus points already.

    Looking forward to thursday.

As long as it does not have a "Pro" logo plastered on it, I will take it.

Removing the glass wouldn't make a difference. The space required between the sensor and mount is defined in the spec. It seems like the shutter would fall under the same area, but unlike the glass I imagine it has supporting hardware around it. By removing that maybe they can place circuit boards and whatnot in that space allowing it to be a little smaller.

Always nice to have a little camera that takes the same lenses.

If you had seen the sensor units of these you would understand about the glass stack and the thickness.

I want to know more about the shutter, but -4EV focusing made it. Hah.

    " -4EV Support for low-light"

That is not the same as just -4EV focusing!

    Re: LUMIX GM1

Vivek, the -4EV spec does refer to focusing. It's the same as the GX7.
Also look at the sentence- it's a translation from Japanese and it does say so in the context of AF:

"- AF is 240fps of the lens drive. -4EV Support for low-light"

A small question to ask, how many fps AF does the Olympus E1 have in comparison to the GX7?

Have to say, first time I've been tempted by a 4/3 camera. It's pretty much the same size as my old p&s!

Hey, I am not saying if it's true or not :-) That's certainly a Panasonic marketing claim to verify. If it's true for the GX7, I don't see why it wouldn't be true for the GM1. If it's not true for the GM1, it's probably not true for the GX7 either.

But Panasonic is claiming it for the GM1, if that was the question :-)

If you mean the sensor readout for autofocusing (and not shots per second), I think it's about the same.

thanks raist3d. I know the Sony NEX autofocus FPS is no where as good as the panasonics, and it shows by having slower AF speeds.

Was just checking to re-validate my preorder for an E1

    Re: LUMIX GM1

Wow, based on the dimensions of the GM1, it beats the Nex 5 series for size! Even the collapsible zoom it comes with is extremely compact. Would I be wrong to say Panasonic now has the lead for the largest sensor in the most compact ILC body?

Wonder though can the LCD will not articulate up or down, and is there an accessory port for external EVF?

    Re: LUMIX GM1

The body is smaller, but the lenses (say the telephoto) of the Q would still be smaller overall. But looks like Panasonic is going to have ready about three lenses for this body in mind (i.e. smaller), though they seems slow except for the new 30mm equiv F1.7 Panny-Leica announced for 2014.

That's the lens I would probably be most interested in. I like the current 20mm F1.7 but I bet the new lens will autofocus fast while the current pancake focuses kinda slow.

This is a little wide for me but I have pre-ordered the camera. Most places say mid December. Panny's US website and my order gives a Nov 20th date but they are not reliable in terms of dates. I don't mind the silver and black body but would much prefer the kit lens to be black.

    Re: LUMIX GM1

Camera size site now have the GM1 listed as well as the Sony A7

I've selected a couple here to start you off...

    Compact Camera Meter

Add in your own mix. I compared the RX100 II and the Ricoh GR.
    The GM1 sure is small.

this was fun too -- http://camerasize.com/compact/#491.9...91,491.30,ha,t

Good info page on the GM1 here - http://www.panasonic.com/uk/consumer/cameras-camcorders/lumix-g-compact-system-cameras-dslm/dmc-gm1k.html

There does not appear, at first glance, to be any way to add an EVF.

Very small, buuuuut I prefer my GX7 ... many better features for "few" money.

For half price you get Canon EOS M

Yes but you also get a (i) slightly bigger camera that (ii) does not focuses anywhere near as fast as this one and (iii) will have to use bigger lenses.

While the Canon is indeed a good value, I rather pay up a bit higher to match better what I would want. Also it seems to me Canon doesn't know what they are doing with their EOS M system yet.
