Fantastic upgrades, and very tempting to buy a used E-M1 to use with legacy glass, a focal length shortener (like the Speed Booster) and not least my favourite zoom lens, the PanaLeica 14-50mm (which focuses very nicely on the E-M1). Very tempting indeed

    Great link!

And great explanation by Olympus. It makes me wonder why bother using focus bracketing vs focus stacking- I guess because of the lenses that support it and also for more control in a 3rd party app.

I also like what seems to be the sophistication of the feature by specifying number of shots and steps. I don't do macro photography but for macro photographers the OMD's have gotten much more interesting with this.

Yes, excellent article... and useful for more than macros too!

    Thank you, Ricardo.
Well obviously the 60/2.8, though no PRO grade, and I can understand to choice for the 40-150/2.8, but the 12-40/2.8 ?
Anyway, I think I'll be more interested in that Focus Bracketing feature, although I wonder how close to each other you can choose your focus points.

    FOCUS BRACKETING
Automatically shoot from 3-999 exposures at different focus points between the min. focusing distance and ∞.
Composite later using the software of your choice for one image with incredible depth-of-field.

    Re: EM1 4.0 Firmware Upgrade

Focus stacking is the feature I am most interested in (although focus bracketing is very useful too).

The stacked final version, would that be RAW or JPEG?

I am absolutely thrilled that Olympus started this feature.

Years ago, I built a rig to do focus stacking (on film). It involved projection of a thin ring of light on the subject which was moved slowly while it was getting exposed (on film!!). It took a lot of time, cash and frustration to make anything useful.

If I look back at that and this pretty much a P&S possibility....

    From Huff's site:

Focus Stacking Mode, exclusive to Version 4.0 for OM-D E-M1, expands the expressive power of macro photography and brings out the true performance of M.ZUIKO PRO lenses.
In Focus Stacking Mode, a single press of the shutter captures eight RAW or JPEG shots with varying focal positions and automatically composites them into a single JPEG file for a macro shot with incredible depth of field.
So, apparently as could be expected a JPEG.

    Kind regards.

    Thanks, Bart.

So, it would seem the focus bracketing feature would be more useful for a RAW shooter. Stack the images outside the camera using an app of one's choice.

Vivek, as a C1P8 user on OSX I think that app for me would be Helicon Focus.
    Are there other players ?

That would be almost. The shallower DOF of the full frame sensor would probably require 20 or more shots per stack. Does the Sony battery last that long?

If you require the Full Stacked Monty of 999 shots then indeed the battery won't last
Perhaps I'm an energy-conscious European, but I can easily do 300 to 350 shots with two batteries with plenty juice left for some more.
But admittedly, a full battery is short-lived especially with frequent chimping and menu browsing.

    Kind regards.

Yes. There are many options to prolong the portable setup's life (battery grip, external portable power, etc).

Hi Bart, I think one can get quite a few more shots on one battery if one shuts down a number of things, like Remote Control, Wi-Fi, etc.

Yup, if one uses the machine gun approach and keeps firing the shutter of the A7r2 at high burst rate then a single regular battery will last close to a thousand shots, even without shutting down any of the options at all.

The EM1 with additional battery in battery grip added gave me more than 2300 shots in high burst rate - impressive! Even including some work on the rear LCD in between the shots!

I don't really count how many exposures I get from a charge. I just shoot until the battery is exhausted, then swap it for another. I've not yet run out of battery power while doing a shoot, presuming I had one spare in the bag.

Then again, I'm not one prone to making more than a few hundred exposures in any given shoot and I could live without any of the continuous exposure modes... :-)

Is it their drive mechanism ? Or their close focus distance ?

very interesting. Then one has to wonder why not just support all the lenses. Even if the focus drive is slower, it would still would be able to achieve similar results, just slower.

An instance where the focus stacking could be handy for any AF lens, would be when using Panasonic lenses on the E-M1

    Re: EM1 4.0 Firmware Upgrade

Just like a couple of years ago when Olympus updated the Firmware on the E-P5 to allow 0 second anti-shock to this great camera I snatched one up. Now it looks like I'm about to do the same with the E-M1 because of it's new Firmware. I read down the lists of improvements and every one ticked a feature I would love. I guess Olympus has figured out another way to get my money!
    Bobby
PS, the rumor mill is now saying the E-M1 Mk II will be released next year with a global shutter which is another leap forward for µ43's!

Thumbs up Re: EM1 4.0 Firmware Upgrade

J-18 I would say, and although I am impatient, I can cq have to wait ...

I also wonder whether Adobe Lightroom will support Focus Stacking in a next upgrade ?
Like, before, they did not support panoramic stitching nor HDR, but, now, they do ...
I know it can be done in Photoshop, or specific programs, but, still, I would find it nice if it could be done in LR ! This might even convince me to upgrade to the creative cloud if necessary !

Olympus has now issued new versions of the manual containing instructions for the new features added. If you go to this page, you will find links both for the E-M5II and the E-M1 bodies.. Be sure to download the right version ( the older one is still available)

Download Manuals : PEN series - OLYMPUS Digital Camera

Olympus just added a new 12th chapter to the manual. Here the content of that chapter and the improvements we will get on the E-M5II :

    Re: EM1 4.0 Firmware Upgrade

Still here, although the focus of my attention has moved to Leica equipment almost 100% now.

I'll likely sell off most of everything else now that the Leica SL has arrived, but the E-M1 and its lenses will be the last to go. It's just a darn good system, and I'll prove that I can get everything I do with the E-M1 out of it before I let it go.

I continue to pull out the E-M1 any time I have product shots to do as the E-M1 and the Macro-Elmarit-DG 45 are a wonderful pair for that kind of work. Matter of fact, I don't think I've fitted any other lens to the E-M1 for almost a year now... !

Well, I've been having fun with the last of the PRO zooms on an M5.2, but I'll shift to another camera shortly and see what it can do. I'll be back.

I ought to say that I'm guilty of that too : since I got an A7r and A7rII. I tend to forget my former loves when I get new tools. However, I still keep a soft spot for the E-M5 : great small system for which I have got some very nice lenses. I don't think that I will sell it. But it will sleep more in my cupboards.

    Still here,

but my interests have shifted significantly towards FF.

FF simply has much more sensor real estate (we all know for what this is great) and is becoming mainstream meanwhile, thus much more decent offers in DSLR (Nikon D810) or also mirror less (Leica SL, Sony A7RII).

Will keep the EM1 with some Pro lenses for the moment but not sure how I will proceed with m43. Might very well go down the SL route for mirror less to be able to use the great new upcoming SL zooms in combination with my M glass on the SL and have the D810 as my wildlife and sports workhorse in combo with a 80-400. Then there is no more need for EM1 and pro glass ....

Definitely no longer impatiently waiting for this Firmware upgrade. We will see ...

Some more nitpicking: I read on FB (Olympus OM-D Worldwide Shooters) it's most likely the new firmware will reset your settings to default values.
So better be prepared and write down your specific settings

I have zero interest in other cameras. Even when FF cameras have become smaller, FF lenses are too large to my taste. I prefer smaller cameras, reason why I prefer my EM5 (classic) with nice small primes over my second set, the more capable EM1 with Pro zooms, which I only occasionally use when zooms come in handy. And it helps that I'm not a shallow DoF junkie, and can live with the DR of my cameras, so m43 suits my needs fine. If anything, I'd get a EM5mkII, but since I have hardly an issue with the mkI, I'll make that decision when prices have come down.
