Thanks Peter...I was photographing some equipment and the cat took an interest. My Novoflex M adapter replacement finally arrived and it was a good opportunity to try the Sonnar for the first time. That was about f/11, because of the flash umbrellas; I hope to test wider apertures today.

Your model is lovely and you seem to have access to some very photgenic locations as well.

But it many of these pictures, it seems as if the highlights are slightly burned out...? Is that characteristic of this lens, or were you intentionally going for an "airy" effect?

Former Soviet Union Fed 50mm/F3.5 Collapsible

I collect FSU cameras and lenses and the G1 gives me a good way to quickly evaluate them digitally.

This Fed is a Leica Elmar lookalike and is from the late fifties. Because it is collapsible it can only be used on the G1 extended.
Both shots hand held at 1/60 and ISO 200 for the first and ISO 400 for the second - F5.6. Processed in Lightroom.

    Shocking!

I always wonder how is the performance of the old russian lens in digital world. It is too expensive to have a Leica M8 for testing. Now your shot really make me worry about the price rise of this collapsible lens in eBay.

I've found a few gems in my collection because of the G1. The 3.5cm Summaron and 5cm Elmar are a couple. The Nikkor 5cm/2 LTM is another. But I agree, the G1 might have an impact on the ol' FED's prices in the future.

There are so many thousand around I would not think so. The situation is different with c-mount lenses. Their prices have explosed. Before the arrival of the G1 you could get them for peanuts.

Looks like this lens is available for around $50US. But the Jupiter 3, 50mm F1.5 would be better and is tougher to find - now around $125

Ain't that the truth! I feel like I have come late to the party - I started looking at c-mount lenses 3 weeks ago and prices have multiplied in that time frame alone. I bought a Taylor Hobson tele this morning and realized that I could have gotten a very nice old Leitz Hektor 135 for less... I have been so busy finding the last few affordable cine lenses that I didn't have time to take pictures, but I hope to change that soon...

sigh~if you dare to take the risk, you can bought a Tevidon 25mm by Euro 40 each in a big lot. Now you see it......

I just concentrate on some CCTV lenses as an alternative and try my luck. I agree with petermcwerner's point, there is thousand of option out there. That's good enough to let the old dead lenses come to life.

Another afternoon tech rehearsal at the ballet, with the 50mm f/0.95 Canon on the G1:

"Tech rehearsal" means it's mostly for the tech crew to figure out lighting cues, so the dancers can wear practice attire instead of their costumes, and don't always dance "full out" to save their strength for the final dress rehearsals and performances. Still, sometimes I get some of my favorite pictures at tech rehearsals.

Speaking of tech: While playing around with the G1 last night, I re-realized (had read it in the instruction book but then forgot) that I could dial in a smaller spot metering area, and it came in handy today.

It was a miserable day at golf but I managed to catch a few shots with the G1 and Voigtlander 40 mm f1.4 Leica M mount.

Re: Shooting with 50's on G1--Share Your Pics!

In case anyone is interested in comparing results from older and more modern lenses...

After shooting yesterday's Canon 50mm f/0.95 picture posted earlier (here it is again)...

...I was back today and shot the same action with a 50mm f/1.5 Voigtlander Nokton lens on the G1:

The lighting was more "dialed-in" today (note modeling on the dancer's back) and also brighter... but then again the Nokton is a bit over 1 stop slower, so I bumped up the ISO from 800 to 1250 to keep the shutter speed above 1/200.

For 1:1 comparison buffs: Canon on left, Nokton on right --

The Nokton is obviously much less flarey around the edges, although the level of detail (note hair) seems similar. And it interests me that the Nokton picture looks sharper even when reduced to web-viewing size.

On the other hand, it looks as if I picked up noticeably more background noise jumping from ISO 800 (for the Canon lens) to 1250 (for the slower Nokton) and this also seems visible even when the photos are reduced to web-viewing size.

What does this prove? Nothing, really -- for me they both have their place and I'm going to continue to choose one or the other depending on my priorities. But I felt it was interesting to see the differences...

Another non-conforming image.;-) I shot this with a Voigtlander 40 mm f1.4 Nokton in Leica M mount.

No post processing except for sizing and a bit of vignette added. Oops I forgot to mention the Raynox close up lens.

Endre, do you have anymore with the FD 50 f/1.4 on your site? I already owned the FD 50 f/1.8 and its quite nice, but I continue to be tempted by the f/1.40--esp. with the very reasonable prices of the FDs.

    Diane,

got this very piece today. one more image in the "moto" gallery, that is all, so far. I have the 50/1,8 and 28mm 2.8 but have not used them on the G1 yet. This 1,4 looks promising, though! This piece is immaculate and got it for 35EUR. a joke.
    cheers,

Hi Diane, here's one from the 1.4:

It's a nice lens on the G1 though there's a bit of green chromatic issues. I got mine in excellent condition for $45 so it's a steal. Still, I use the Summar more often (sorry, obligatory):

Thanks Robert and Endre. The f/1.4 is very nice. There are some very inexpensively priced ones around so may pick one up.

Distance is about 80cm at aperture f16 . I believe , the result speaks for itself .
Gosh, I remember when I owned a Hasselblad!! It was a focal plane shutter with a top speed of 1/1000 and was called strangely enough the "Hasselblad 1,000f)!

Thanks, Ranger 9, for this comparison -- I've been keeping my eye out for oldie Canon and/or CV 50mm deals. These shots help tremendously!

I love all these shots (why is Mary Poppins hanging outside a shop in Budapest LOL???). I haven't seen a 50 f/.95 anywhere--but glad to see some photos from it.

What I really want is an affordable something in range of 35 f/1.4 if there is something--may have to be 40. I have the FD 35 f/2.8 (bought it because its so small--and now like it because its nice, but would love faster) but am still looking.

    Hi Diane,
The Canon 50/.95 is a huge lens and very heavy on the G1.

As for 35mm, I have a Canon 35/1.8 for LTM I bought from Helen Hill. Small, sharp, and fast, not 1.4, but close. If you want even smaller than the FD 35/2.8, the Canon Serenar 35/2.8 in LTM is very small, and sharp too. It's even smaller than the 35/1.8.

and there is the 40 mm Nokton 1.4 Or do they smear to much in the corners?
And also there is Hexanon 40 mm 1.8 of course for less then $ 40,-

40/1.4 G. Zuiko (Olympus Pen) can't be beat on the G1. Fast, light, small, sharp, excellent bokeh, much closer focus than the Nokton...and cheaper too.

    How about this one?

Thanks all. I've had the Nokton 40 f/1.4 in my sites. Didn't know the 2 Canons for LTM nor the Hexanon. Need to look into those.

I do know Godfrey's Pen F lens. I've been admiring his work with it since he got it. As I understood it, he made an adaptor (beyond my skill) but he says there is an adaptor coming soon, so if I can find one, a possibility.
