Well, that sucks as PDAF is necessary to use my tunas -
little tuna 150/2
and
big tuna 300/2.8 as well as
zoom tuna 90-250/2.8.
Yep, the tunas have to stay with Oly or so it seems.
The odd thing is I found the PL D Summilux 25mm F1.4 AF to operate pretty good on the G9 w/ DFD, basically on par with EM1-II, but not so my Oly 43-lenses (7-14/4.0, 14-35/2.0, 150/2.0).

Yeah DFD is proprietary to Panasonic bodies WITH Panasonic lenses only hence why I hope this partnership is TRULY technology sharing across the board and not just mount sharing. If the OEM lenses are tied exclusively to working as OEM with respective bodies then this partnership isn’t as attractive to me personally.

Thanks Bart, you have a great set of lenses.
I started late with acquiring Zuiko 4/3 lenses.
So most of my Olympus lenses are m4/3.
And I have one PL lens, the sublime Nocticron 42.5/1.2.
In addition to my three tunas, I have one more 4/3 lens.
It’s the Zuiko 50-200mm f/2.8-3.5 ED SWD.
The 2x TC turns that into a 100-400 lens. Nice.

Olympus had quality lenses from the getgo. So, why not use them!

L-Mount Alliance: Strategic cooperation between Leica Camera, Panasonic and Sigma
One day before the official launch of photokina 2018, Leica Camera AG, Panasonic and Sigma announced a strategic partnership at the company’s press conference. The “L-Mount Alliance” is an unprecedented way of working together and will be particularly beneficial to the customers of the three companies. It allows Panasonic and Sigma to use the L-mount standard developed by Leica for their own developments and thus also offer cameras and optics with this lens mount. Through the joint efforts of the three partners, the alliance will significantly contribute to the importance of the L-Mount standard for the world of photography
Due to their numerous interchangeable components, system cameras allow a very flexible use and can be individually configured according to requirements. The bayonet is the most important interface, as the lens has a significant impact on the imaging performance and therefore on the final image quality. The strategic partnership between Leica, Panasonic and Sigma will allow customers to use a wider range of cameras and lenses in the future without compromising on so far to have to specify individual manufacturers, because they use propriety bayonets.

Dr. Andreas Kaufmann, Chairman of the Supervisory Board and majority shareholder, Leica Camera AG: “Photographers are extremely important for their chosen camera system. Particularly in the increasingly growing market for mirrorless system cameras, there is an ever-increasing variety of different requirements on the part of the users. In order to be able to meet these requirements at short notice, we have decided to work together with renowned partners from the photographic industry.
With Panasonic we have many years of partnership and trusting cooperation and their expertise in electronics is undisputed. Sigma is also a respected company, which has established itself particularly in the field of optical development and with its innovative products, a perfect complement to our existing L-Mount portfolio can. We believe that together with our partners, we can achieve mutual and sustainable growth for all our products. ”
Mr. Tetsuro Homma, Senior Managing Executive Officer, Panasonic Corporation, said: “Panasonic’s focus has always been to revolutionize the camera market and make photographers’ lives easier, more advanced, and more enjoyable. Our long-standing partnership with Leica has resulted in numerous high-performance, high-end digital cameras, combining Leica’s leading optical technology with Panasonic’s digital technologies. This partnership has enabled us to drive the development of excellent digital photography products. The L-Mount alliance with Leica and Sigma is a prime example of the power of our collaboration. This alliance of strong companies will fundamentally change the future of the photography industry. As a market challenger, we have always driven innovation with the slogan ‘Changing Photography’ to meet the high expectations of professional photographers. Our
Partnering with Leica and Sigma will provide additional business opportunities for our companies, but above all, it will continue to bring great pleasure to our customers in photography. ”

Currently, there is an almost overwhelming choice of different systems that, however, do not yet meet all the needs of users, especially in terms of extensibility and flexibility. SIGMA joins this alliance to develop mirrorless cameras that benefit from the short run. As SIGMA seeks to develop high-quality and innovative high-performance products, this alliance will greatly enhance both the implementation and expandability of our camera system, significantly increasing the value to our customers. Leica is a great company and has had a significant impact on photography for more than 100 years, and Panasonic is a leader in many different areas because of its proven track record. Absence of a swivel LCD is a big let down for me.

No clear information on the imaging sensors (maker, if it is a BSI CMOS, etc) is intriguing. Sony supplying them? The pixel counts are near identical to Z6/7.

What Panasonic is doing looked GREAT!!!

Perhaps all the hype generated by Canon and Nikon entering FF Mirrorless should’ve been saved for the Panasonic Photokina announcement. It seems they have really listened to complaints, watched the Mirrorless market closely, and is going to attack it aggressively on the Pro side with 10 new lenses within a year of release of the S1/S1R. The initial Len release will also do 95% of what I’d ever need focal length wise. A little disappoint in no PDAF but perhaps they will get DFD2+AI to work at well as what we’ve come to expect. Also towards the end of the press conference Panasonic mentioned the 2020 Olympics, a new sensor, and a commitment to being the 8K leader so perhaps we should expect an SH1 before then too.

On a side note the new Micro 4/3 10-25/1.7 looked absolutely amazing too... and sorta has me wanting to add a G9 to my kit just for it.

...and yes I’m considering a “change” back to Panasonic if it performs up to the hype though technically I never actually left.

With the new 10-25mm for m4/3, I might stay with that format longer and add a GH5S for industrial video. I don't doubt that I'll go Panasonic S at some stage though :)

Well they only said “3-way tilt” so perhaps they came up with a new way to make it tilt up, down, and out for videographers/selfie mode... and no they didn’t mention sensor supplier but perhaps it’s TowerJazz, Sony, or maybe even Samsung since all the rumors keep wanting to point that way... but we saw that with the D850 too. LOL

It is not the “selfie” mode, Tre. Portrait mode for me. :)

I am going put down my 2 guilders to say that there will be no adapting of G to S.
I'm with you there Vivek - I can see it might be useful for some video applications, but really not otherwise - the adapter would be a real issue anyway as the distance to the sensor is so similar.

I think we probably need a new forum around here for all things L mount.

Yeah I probably would... My advice to others stands though. If jumping into Mirrorless now from scratch - if Sony doesn’t fit the bill then I’d wait a year or two for either the Panasonic S Cameras or for the CaNikon bodies to catch up to what Sony/Fuji/Panasonic/Olympus have been doing for years now... Seriously... unless you’re still heavily invest in DSLR lenses today I see absolutely no reason to go their way at this point... maybe in a couple years though when they try again.
