    Kinoptik 25mm/2.0 on the G1

This Kinoptik Macro Apochromat is a 35mm cine lens, it covers the full G1 sensor. Mine came in an Eclair/Cameflex mount with a custom made G1 adapter. It focuses to 50cm. The front lens is deeply recessed in the mount so that it will not need a sun shade.

Ahh so you got that one! I almost had my hands on the same lens (in super rare c-mount) for $200 until the seller checked E-bay and saw YOURS!! They backed out.

At that price you would have had a real bargain

Some more pictures I made yesterday with this lens at a service station on the A1 motorway between Lausanne and Geneva. All pictures at ISO=100 developed with Raw Therapee and Gimp

I've very much enjoyed your posts here and on dpreview and elsewhere.
    Thank you for the kudos

I see you had a custom mount done.. can you share who built that? or do you know of any adapters for this (I think it's cameflex?) to C or m43 or OM...?
IF you are not sure, a useful site for identifying your lens mount is http://www.lensid.com . I bought my lens from Wolfgang Rabe in Germany ([email protected]) and it already came with the custom mount.

By googling "Cameflex lens adapter" I also found the following address:

    http://www.lesbosher.co.uk/lensadapt.htm

    Hope this helps.

Peter, that lens and those photos are amazing.

I feel as though I'm looking at the original subjects in person with my own eyes.

Thank you for posting and I hope you present more.

Thank you for your kudos. This lens has become my favorite walkaround lens. The combination of high luminosity, color rendition, sharpness on the whole M43 sensor already wide open and macro capability is a winner over all my other 25mm lenses.

The only possible contender might be the 26mm/1.1 Macro Switar, which is currently for repair (diaphragm stuck) at the Bolex factory - an hours dirve fromm home. Here a shot I made at f/5.6 - I am curious to know how it will behave wide open.

Obviously a capable performer on the G1. But that lens makes Frankenstein look handsome.

LOL, not all of them look like this... I have one in smaller Arri Standard mount housing and also you can get it in tiny C-mount.

Last week I passed by Media-Markt (MM) in Geneva, a consumer electronics supermarket to have a look at the Olympus E-P1. I was not tempted.

MM are not known to have high technical expertise but in this case a knowledgeable salesman was intrigued by the Kinoptik on my G1, knew that a new one was over €5'000, had never seen one on a still camera and asked me a lot of questions about the lens, the adapter and the results. The Frankenstein effect must have worked wonders. I doubt a simple C-mount version would have elicited the same sort of respect. LOL

DO you know approximately the date range in which this (FRONK-en-steen!!) version of the lens was produced?

The Eclair company ceased camera production in 1973, so it is logical to assume that the lens was produced before.

Amazing lens and congratulations on owning it and using it so well. Those who disparage the G1 (and the micro 4/3 sensor) should look at these photos.

LOL, yes all erotic film directors have lots of them
Every lens has its sweet spot. It took me a little longer to start liking this lens on m4/3 than my other Kinoptik lenses (such as 50, 75, 100, 150)
And thats obvious, I guess its easy to like 50-150 since they are so straight forward in terms of FOV.
25mm a bit tricky since it has that little swirl. I would not mind shooting landscapes with this lens, stopped down to f5.6, but it excels at close portraits 1-2 meters and macro work under 0.5 meters. I started feeling comfortable using it after about 1.5 hour of continues use. (oh what a drag dude

I have a 150 in Alpa Reflex mount but did not dare to use it on the G1. It seems to weigh a ton and does not have a tripod mount. Could you use it normally without damaging the G1 lens mount? Same problem BTW with the 9.8mm/1.8: great lens but weighs about 1400 grams.

Absolutely, 9.8mm its way too large and heavy, tripod is mandatory.
Im not sure about K150 in Alpa mount, as I dont know how much it weigh, but my version is in Arri Std and it weigh appr 600-700 grams at most and I have no problem on G1. But I would still suggest you grip the lens and not the body, although its doable, its not comfortable since the lens is a bit nose heavy.
But honestly I think this particular lens is more suitable for FF bodies (like 5D, D700 etc) I am not saying K150 looks bad on G1, all I am saying is this lens will be much better as long portrait lens on FF body, than 300mm landscape lens on G1 body. (dont forget the cost factor ) Unless some people into 300mm portraits, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Man, I am having a devil of a time getting this adapter made. I have contacted every potential vendor mentioned in this thread and more, and although I've had a couple "sometime..." responses, I have nothing firm. Sigh! The lens mocks me on top of my desk.

I'm not quite sure how to proceeed. toilet paper roll? :-)

I have the c-mount version of that lens (found it in a store at an acceptable price), very tiny indeed, but renders nicely and no vignetting.

Sure, here some "product shots" of a well used lens...I take it as a good sign.
(will give it some TLC, cleaning etc. soon...)

Just noticed that it is actually a T2 lens, so its speed must be even faster
than f2 like f1.8 or f1.9 - anyone knows that exactly?

    A bit technical, vignetting (a bit) (@ f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6) and LCA (none I could see).
I may have to re-shoot the vignetting test, since the sunshade is a bit too long
    actually and causes vignetting.

Thanks for the photos. Attachment #5 (rear) shows some brassing.

This metal part if painted mat black would help with color fringing seen in image #3 (difficult light) of your earlier post.

    Re-shoot of vignetting test w/o shade (f2, f2.8, f4, f5.6), a bit less obviously --> shorten shade!

Good idea, I will work anyway on the lens, clean it up, so I will blacken out the shiny parts in the optical path. Thanks!

An old thread, I know. But I saw some Kinoptik images the other day and went back here for a second look. I like what I see, again.

Klaus, I think the lens is an f/2 lens (nominal, theoretical speed) with the T values showing the true speed as used with "external" light meters - all in the film (movie) making tradition.

Thanks Jonas, I should have edited that, but forgot as I have already found that out. T-values stand for true lens transmission value, so it reflects the internal light absorbance and not just a geometric ratio what an f-stop is.

Klaus, it gave me an opportunity to express my admiration for the lens as demonstrated by your and Peter's images here. There is something with these images I find very pleasing to my eyes. probably it is the lack of CA.

If anyone see a good and clean C-mount version of this lens for sale, please let me know!

Jonas, they show up on *bay but fetch insane prices now (> $1200); just few days ago one was sold (320491450085) for $900 (which looked rather shabby to me).

    Thank you,

I have to rephrase myself then... If anyone see a good and clean C-mount version of this lens for sale for a decent price, please let me know!

But really, USD 900 is about EUR 660. If the lens is very nice and clean and with proper aperture and focusing rings I would consider it.
The lens in the auction... well, "rather shabby" is my impression as well. Somebody really wanted it. I guess patience can pay off.

    regards,

    /Jonas

Re: Kinoptik 25mm/2.0 on the G1

Here in Göteborg the last decent camera shop closed down about two years ago. Now we have only one, OK, it is decent too, shop buying and selling used gear.

But, I'm not in any hurry. I have two other 25mm lenses to evaluate. It's silly really. I bought the G1 in November 2008 and I'm still looking for that good 25mm. The introduction of the Panasonic 20/1.7 slowed me down trying to make friends with the AF and the aperture opening and closing at will (and not allowing to check the DOF in enlarged mode). I'm now going all manual keeping the 20/1.7 only for snapshots or when lending the camera to somebody.

Maybe I can lay my hands on a Kinoptik 25/2 in some time.

Found a Kinoptik f1.9 32mm but without mount in close to MINT condition. Lens register is about 40mm, so plenty of room for conversion. I guess I use one of the mft helicoids I just bought to convert it, since it will give additional macro abilities.

I saw that one (as I'm still looking for a 25/2). You got it? Congratulations, and good luck with the adaption!

Thanks Jonas. Adaptions is pretty straightforward and actually very simple. I have adapted a Cameflex mount Kinoptik 2.5/12.5mm which I will sell (impressive "Frankencamera" optic)

Does it cover the sensor? I saw Kinoptik specifying it as a 16 and Super 16mm lens. But it's the same with the 25/2.
