Those are great Brian. I'm very aware of how much work goes into building rock walls--we just finished one 110' long. Where are these shots taken? Looks like a place I'd like to take my daily strolls.

Interesting lens. I'll have a to keep an eye on this thread more.

    Thank you, Rafael.
Strangely enough, this store did not appear when I made an ebay search for this lens. I am still undecided between this lens and the 9-18.

Peter, if I didn't already have the ZD 9-18 and ZD 7-14... I'd go for the Lumix 7-14.

    Hello all,

I was just wondering if anyone had managed to find a review of this lens yet? Failing that, any further samples?

I'm very interested, it's just a shame it is so expensive

Thank you for your opinion, Brian,
Why the Lumix rather than the ZD 9-18? The review and sample photos I saw seem very good.

    Hi Peter,

the extra fov given by the 7-14 vs 9-18 makes a dramatic difference... and combined with the potential for video makes the GH1 package very exciting. I wonder whether the Lumix 7-14 will CDAF during video shooting?

    Kind Regards

    Re: G1 with 7-14mm - show yours !!!!!

I was experimenting with the kitzoom and found out (nothing new) that it is much wider (I estimate it to be ~12mm FL, yes the distortions are there) when the contacts are disabled and the camera can not recognize the lens to do the in body corrections. Unfortunately, I snapped the cable that connects the circuitary inside the lens and the contact block. I could only use it at the widest aperture.

If anyone has the kitzoom and would like to experiment, try to block the contacts with tape selectively and figure out if you can make the aperture work while disabling the other functions. You need not open the lens for it and of course the risk is yours.

My 7-14 Pana lens is scheduled for delivery on Monday.

Extra to the ca 1000 Euro of lens price, I will have to pay ca 320 Euro of VAT and import taxes

I'll post some pics as soon as I had the time to make them !!!

Has anyone succeeded in decoding the connector block yet?

All I've tried so far is putting a logic probe on it. I'm no expert at interpreting this kind of thing, but my impression was that rather than being a simple series of switched "signal pins" that perform specific functions, it's more like a data bus that carries digital pulses between the body and lens. If that's the case, it's going to be harder to tinker with it... although of course I hope I'm wrong!

Speaking of G1 electronics, does anyone know what type of plug is used for the remote-control connector? I'd like to whip up a cord so I can trigger it from a PocketWizard. I tried using a simple submini phono plug, and it seemed to fit but didn't operate. None of the stores locally carry the official Panasonic control, so I can't just go in and ask for a dekko.

I know all about this due to my 'timelapsyness'...

It's a 2.5mm 4-pole plug like so (probably due to the fact that they need external audio through this socket as well):

from further research I've found that only poles 3 and 4 (4 is probably the ground) are used for the lumix trigger and the camera is looking for a 2k ohm signal for shutter (5k for focus). So out of curiosity I rigged up a female 2.5mm 3pole to male 4 pole with a 2k resistor inline. Vola! If you close the circuit it triggers the shutter.

Ranger 9, you might try one of these:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=200289017419

As soon as my G1 comes back from loan (hopefully today) I'll see what I can figure out with the kit lens contacts...

    Hi,

my 7-14mm arrived this morning, as scheduled
So, I used my lunchbreak to go for a walk, and make some pictures, that I want to present to you in World Première

Most of these pics were made @ 7mm, and are hardly cropped
So far, I'm very pleased with this lens, and there's certainly more to come !

The lens looks really good. I know you'll enjoy it.

What do with the "corner mush"?

    Enjoy!

(FWIW, I enjoy my 15mm C-V Heliar and the "mush" that bothers some does not affect me).

    Re: G1 with 7-14mm - show yours !!!!!

The G1's 14-45 is designed to present the 14mm FoV *AFTER* the embedded lens correction is performed and matches the 14mm setting FoV of the VE-D 14-50 lens supplied with the L1. Comparison tests demonstrate that it does this.

So the optical focal length at minimum FL is a bit shorter (probably 12mm) to allow for software rectilinear correction and consequent reduction of FoV. Why would you want to disable the lens correction only to have to do the corrections yourself later?

You don't need to do any monkeying about with the lens connections itself to do this. Just use a RAW converter that doesn't support the embedded lens correction metadata, like Vuescan, ufraw or dcraw.

    Hi Godfrey,

the Olympus ZD 12-60 has a fair amount of distortion at 12mm - and that extra fov is very useful... as long as the Lumix is sharp, I don't mind the distortion in some situations.

The best news is that Lightzone now supports the G1 native raw files.

That was not the intention and it was an offshoot of that test.

Anyway, the kit zoom, to me, was useful for a few tests.

If Robert could get the cable (extremely short) repaired, I will continue with the tests.

For now, here is a Cat Snap made with my custom made 12.5mm f/1.4 prime lens (no external attachments) @ f/2.8.

I have just checked the converted pics I made, with a RAW vue on Vuescan, and I can confirm that there is a larger FOV than what Silkypix shows. Not much, maybe the equivalent of some 1mm of FL.

So, I am now the proud owner of a 6-14mm lens
I wonder how much those will go on Ebay ???

Also, Vuescan shows much more detail in the sky ! I will try to develop some comparison for you !

Yes, same for the 14-45: not really 12mm, but 13mm. There's a frame of about 15 pixel width around the 14mm field of view when I process the same image at 14mm in VueScan vs Lightroom.

Personally, I'll take the lens corrections ... rectilinear distortion, chromatic aberration and fall off, all three ... over the tiny bit of additional FoV. If I need wider, I'll fit the 11-22 or buy a 9-18 or 7-14. If I want distortion, my old Pentax Fish-Eye-Takumar or a Lensbaby will do fine. ;-)

In fact, my "real" image is 4018 x 3016, so just a tiny 0.45% wider and 0.53% higher than what you get when using the embedded lens corrections.

Here's comparison pics, sorry for the $$$ signs on the one from Vuescan.

developped with Silkypix, using only camera setting, no corrections

using Vuescan, a slightly larger FOV, visible clearly at the left border where the trees hit the image border

Wow. that's actually quite a significant difference in my opinion! Look at the handrail in the distance (across the lake) on the left...

So is silkypix the only post processor that takes the lens into account? Anyone had a chance to try adobe camera raw 5.3??

This example of the 7-14 processing is with the Lumix G 7-14/4, right? Not the Olympus ZD 7-14/4 ... ?? The latter inserts no lens correction metadata, only the former.

Adobe Camera Raw and Lightroom honor Panasonic's intended metadata lens correction processing.

Rafael, I can't get the 1st or the 3rd--but the second photo shows off what a good WAZ can do. Very nice.

I'd love to see the 7-14 on the G1 also.

well, I think we are facing an forum interface problem.

And I don't have an "edit" button to try and change something.
I have however changed my picture hosting habits, I was with flickr, but run into the 200 pics free hosting, so now I upload them to my 1 GB picasa account.

Could that have to do with it ??

Posting a pic of the G1 with the 7-14mm attached will have to wait 3 more weeks, because I own only one digital camera, and that's the G1.
But, beginning of June, my wife will be back from a longer stay in Russia (her homeland), and she will bring her (former, my) FZ30. So, please be a little patient

    Re: G1 with 7-14mm - show yours !!!!!

I was very surprised to discover the Pan 7-14mm did not have Mega O.I.S on board ! is this because it is a 'clone' of the Olympus version or are these short focal ranges not considered 'worthy' ?

Haha, why not have the G1 picture itself

Here, and I also made some comparison shots for you to appreciate the really compact dimensions, hardly bigger than the 14-45m, taking into account that the sunshade on the 7-14 cannot be removed.

    Hope this helps you !

Wow! that is absolutely incredible! I want one!

It's true the Olympus ZD 7-14mm is optically amazing, but the size difference swings things firmly in favour of the Lumix imho.

    Thanks Rafael

    Kind Regards

    So Do I!
    Oh Dear!
and there was me thinking it was a great big lump. Presumably it'll work properly on the forthcoming Olympus body (of course, it'll have IS on that as well :-)

    Just this guy you know

Yesterday, I had some time between meetings to shoot around the lovely Grand Place of Mons (Belgium)

    Here's some results :

I particularly like the impressive perspectifs with this lens at it's shorter focal length !

Very nice Rafael. I was really caught by the next to last with the yellow chairs just because its so visually striking but they are all lovely. I agree about the perspective with the lens at shorter FL. I'm anxious to have opportunity to shoot with mine. If it keeps raining I may float away LOL.

Did you order one in Japan, Diane, or do you wait until they come to the US ?

Whoops, I meant my WAZ--I opted for the Oly 9-18. I had decided if I needed wider, I could use my 12-24 on 5D (but I like what I see from the 7-14).

We've had more or less continual rain for 7 days--and a great deal more this Spring. A great deal of the US has been in the grips of this large weather maker---but that doesn't make it any nicer for photographing LOL. This is the time when one needs weather sealed LOL--but I haven't gotten out my Ziplock bags yet--the skies aren't even interesting--just grey. The light, however, is often lovely and soft for some things.

Impressive WA shots Rafael from what looks to be a very good lens.

I am tempted to order one from Japan as you did but UK's customs will probably charge me so much I can probably buy it cheaper at home ?
