The beta (Release Candidate) Adobe DNG Converter 5.4 is available for test from Adobe Labs.

http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Camera_Raw_5.4

I downloaded the Converter--not the plugin-- and installed it on my Mac running OS 10.5.7.

A Panasonic G1 Raw file converted to a DNG went from a Raw size of 14 MB to a DNG of 12.5 MB. This DNG imported correctly into Aperture 2.1.3 and is editable as a raw file.

This is very good progress. If only Apple would get OS X to do the same thing natively!

Thanks for this tip. Aperture loads the dng's without a problem and the file size is reasonable at last.

The DNGs from adapted lenses have always been the smaller files, but this is good news for the Pana lenses.

Well that worked for a little while. Aperture now won't import DNGs made with Panasonic lenses.

A thread over on dpreview suspects that Apple's recent "Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.6" is the culprit. DNGs from Panny lenses converted with 5.4 beta were working for folks prior to that install.

Here's hoping Adobe with address the issue in the next version of DNG converter.

Or that Apple would at last support RW2 natively in Aperture.

DNGs made with 5.4 shot with legacy (adapted) lenses import just fine.
