    Ah... I still don't get it. What's a plane tree? Is that a kind of tree? Never heard of it.

    Not that kinda plane...the photo shows wood before ya plane it....I think that's what he meant....

    Yup, plane trees are sycamores. As I said, it was a weak photo pun. ;-)

    Oh dear! Do you differentiate between Plane and Sycamore there? We would, too, but only if the discussion was at the species level. Otherwise, the common family and genus would make them either Plane or Sycamore, your choice.

    Also know here as the buttonball tree, one of the common names for the sycamore.

    Yes; scyamores are large stately trees, but also weeds; planes are typically grown in towns -- and sometimes sort of pollarded -- they are resistant to atmospheric pollution.
