South Rim Grand Canyon Day 1

I arrived here late yesterday afternoon and will be here till Friday morning. Great weather coming this way with lots of clouds, and thunderstorms for sunrise/sets should be worthwhile.

I normally shoot my landscapes with medium format however I'm in the process of adding infrared to the mix as well. I'll send my 1Ds II in shortly to have it converted however in the meantime I'l playing around with a Singh Ray I filter and a 24-70 lens.

Very interesting being able to shot at high noon!

These first images are all shot with the IR filter using a custom WB on the 1DsII

    Very nice clouds!

I use intellicast.com to keep track of the weather and currently it shows cloud coverage at 34% (4PM) should be 56% by 5 and 60% by 7PM and sunset at 7:37. Tues through Friday are calling for isolated thunderstorms so the cloud coverage should continue.

Currently hanging around near the bar at the Grand Hotel waiting to go back out. Rough duty but if I didn't do it someone else would...

    Don,

Is the horizon in the second and third ones supposed to be tilted? I haven't had the pleasure of the seeing the Grand Canyon yet. Someday!

    Cheers,

The camera was level for the shot so I guess the canyon was tilted. The second really looks like its running downhill! I might try to level it out when I get back home.

Since you've never been here I thought I'd offer some suggestions. August is a great time for clouds and thunderstorms. The only real problem is the crowds. The best time is during the winter; clouds, snow, mist without the people.

I normally come here in December (and will be returning again this year) however it's been awhile since I was here during the summer months and thought I'd try it.

So there I was last night getting the WRS set up to capture a sunset when a group of kids decide to hang around near me. There I am when all of a sudden one of them asks if I would kindly take their group picture. I declined as I was working and said so. Just reinforces my need to be in a place that is devoid of people when I'm working.

Reviewing last nights attempts. This was taken with the WRS-1000/P45+ and 72mm lens. Leveled of course on the Cube.

Very nice, Don, and thanks for the reply. Perhaps if I'd been there, the tilt would subconsciously look more natural.
