Re: How about a more fun with IR thread?

I decided this morning instead of just showing a simple color IR image I'd take you through some of the steps I normally do.

I was told I could shoot IR with Jpeg and make my life simpler however it wouldn't give me the total control that I want so I've go back to RAW. I shoot with a custom white balance the open the images first in Canon's Digital Photo Professional (DPP) as Adobe doesn't handle the WB very well. While in DPP I can tweak the image and decide if I want to turn it into B&W (which is much better than CS4). Once I have the image to the point I want to import it to CS it's a simple matter of hitting a button and it opens in ACR which I ignore and immediately open into Photoshop. About the only thing I do in Photoshop is run an action for the color then maybe do some minor tweaking before resizing the image to where I want it to be.

I've added an image that show 4 stages of an image just click on it for a larger size.

I got the action from Mike Soares at Precision Camera. If you send me an email address I'll forward it to you. I'd post it here if I could and will if someone has any ideas...

Sandy & I went to the San Cayetano de Tumacácori Mission, Arizona's first Spanish mission located a short drive south of Tubac yesterday. Here's a couple of the first images all taken in IR from the 1DsII and 24-105 lens.

Eleanor, another GREAT old car shot, great composition. The monochrome really works with this one, and of course the sky is perfect framing!

Ya just have to love being in a target rich area as we were yesterday; here's a couple more from the mission. The more I visit the local missions the more I can tell IR was made for this type of shooting - now I wonder how it'll hold up to Indian ruins.

Don, You are really capturing a lot of detail with that IR conversion. Those are really nice.
Jim, The IR with the betterlight is so interesting, especially with the vintage lenses. Does the meniscus act like a tilt/shift lens or lensbaby?

Re: How about a more fun with IR thread?

Hi Cindy thanks for the kind words. I admit I’ve been a little surprised at the sharpness and clarity of the images I’ve been getting. I found out this was the first 1DsII Precision Camera had converted and maybe some of the image quality rests on the camera’s sensor and 16.7 pixels. Of course some of it could be pure dumb luck on my part; either way I’m ecstatic with the current results.

Jim for some reason or another I find myself liking the last image more in the series – it might be the fall off from center, either way I do like it a lot.

Viablex - really like the second image (foot bridge)

Cindy - both are nice but I lean towards the second although the first really stand out.

These were taken yesterday during a long drive from Tucson south to Sahuarita and back vis the back way off Mt Lemmon.

Re: How about a more fun with IR thread?

As many of you know I had the 1DsII converted a couple months ago. I started showing images from local Spanish Missions shortly afterwards and so far I've sold 3 images. So my little experiment on seeing if IR is commercially good for me is working out.

Here's a sample of the same image I took a couple days ago. The first is the RAW as taken from the camera while the second is processed in CS4 then the third shows the B&W conversion. Just fooling around and wanted to share...

Douglas, I really like every one of your film IR photos. (I've never given film IR a shot.) I'm so glad you contributed to this thread. It has been slow going lately. If I had to pick a favorite from yours, I would pick the old gas station. That is a wonderful find and well taken.

    Thanks Cindy,
It's been a while since I've shot it as well. I usually tried to shoot it when there wasn't a lot of green stuff around. I wasn't really looking for the glowing trees and grass, but I loved the look and feel of the film.

Re: How about a more fun with IR thread?

Douglas – I’m in total agreement with Cindy simple great images and the gas station is right up there. I remember first experimenting with IR film in the late 60’s and getting excellent fog as I kept loading the film incorrectly.

Thanks a lot Don. I'm not quite that old, but I do know a couple of people that found the late 60's a little foggy.

False color IR from a 715nm converted Canon 350D. I used to do a lot of IR photography and just renewing my interest. The 350d was converted back in 2005 by maxmax and I just sent it back to them for cleaning last week. Some earlier work here.
