I've heard of it... I'd be willing to bet it probably is not that much better than your 400/2.8 with the 2x and 1.4x converters stacked and STOPPED DOWN to f11 
All kidding aside, that 400/2.8 with both converters -- for an effective 1120mm f8 -- was excellent wide open. I never did try 2 @ 2X's stacked, but it's a tempting thought for 1600mm f11!

2 2x's is a tempting idea now with the price on the re-furbished ones at B&H.
I was out this evening with the White Monster and have to get at Gitzo Systemic soon. I also learned not to work by a busy road. Too many lookie lou's almost causing wrecks.
