    a request for help

though i haven't posted on this particular forum, i use canon cameras a lot, and prefer their color. more than one of these galleries use ir converted (or not) canon cameras. i'd very much like input into the request i've posted elsewwhere. thank you much.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

since i started as a journalist in high school, do photos in a series, and enjoy history, i'd like the enter the leica barnack contest (turns out you can use any camera).

for the past two days i've gone through my 2009 photos and have come up with six themes, which i've posted on my site.

    www.pbase.com/wwp/entry1
    www.pbase.com/wwp/entry2
    www.pbase.com/wwp/entry3
    www.pbase.com/wwp/entry4
    www.pbase.com/wwp/entry5
    www.pbase.com/www/entry6

i'd first of all like to know which theme has a chance of winning (i like them all). this contest for photojournalism, so it has to have social content. look at past winners and see what i mean.

they don't always go for top-heavy political emphasis. each theme i've chosen backed up by dozens of photos, so these particalur ones don't have to be the final choice. i would like curator evaluations of what might be strongest, given the requirements.

    thanks much for your insight.

    Re: a request for help

    Wayne,
though i have no personal experience in entering myself a photography contest of this kind, here's the advice i repeatedly gave to my senior students in graphical design as well as some models when time came to submit pieces or books to a jury based on artistic merits: "first choose what's close to your heart".

It's not as true when it comes to getting a client gig and even less a corporate contract where a lot of technical requirements, style oriented decisions, usability and such get into the picture (pun, oh well).

Of course there are boundaries inherent to each situation, be it a contest or else.
But within these limits defining the specifics, selecting "what i do and defines me" over "what i think they'll like" turns out more than often the best way to go -including building up one own style, technique and experience.

Having said that: if it was less "staged" (pun again, sorry) i'd personally go for Entry 1. Or maybe, selectively, a couple of shots from #3 & #4.
Entries 2&5 have a lot of artistic merits, but in this case it's not clear whether they would not readily be perceived as over processed.

By the way, no joy on Entry 6, the link returns a "Missing Gallery" error.

Here's for my 0.02.. and... nice work!

thanks much. i've been working on gallery one which was shot with a 5d and 17-40 lens. in the end i think theater closest to my heart. and these were not staged per se, but shot during a dress rehearsal. i hope a balance of back stage prep and the actual performance will bounce off each other. a lot more to choose from at

it's so funny i keep coming back to canon after having been thru fuji, sigma, leica, etc! eight years of trials!

thanks again. please let me know any more comments you might have on this gallery.
