    Canon RF 85mm f1.2 Lens

    Now we are talking

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1YyOJlLe-4

Results are stunning and eye-AF obviously works very well for portraiture - for what it should be designed

Now Canon finally only needs to release their PRO R camera with built in IBIS - that would change the game completely

Results look good and the price jumped up a lot over the EF version... I was half expecting it to be the same price as the 50/1.2 but not $2,700.

    C'mon guys, admit it - it's a spectacular piece of glass ...
If it's worth the buckazoids remains to be seen ...

I'm not surprised about the price. With the quality of the lens and Canon's reputation in this area, I think it will be an easy sell to the target group. Comparing the price to the EF-mount lens is irrelevant. That lens has been in production since the beginning of time and would be a money maker for Canon at more or less any price.

As for Canon R not being a high end pro camera with the latest, coolest tech, neither is the 5D where much of the R tech comes from. That hasn't prevented the 5D from being one of the most used and loved pro cameras ever. Some photographers even prefer a camera without the latest, greatest, including without IBIS. Any part that moves can wear out or break. If it does, it will be at the most inconvenient time. This is the reason why the GH5s doesn't have IBIS.

An impressive piece of glass, with almost no more flaws like CA etc.

When comparing this to Leica 1.4 or 1.25 lenses, the 1.2/85 RF still comes in relatively cheap

Really hope for a decent mirrorless R camera upgrade soon.

It's one of those lenses that, when I see the photos taken with it, makes me think "I want to see more photos!".

It's the kind of lens I'd buy before I have a camera to mount it on... if I could just find those $2,700 that I'm sure I must have forgotten somewhere

    Jorgen,

I fully agree! This lens I would buy and later look for a mountable (hopefully professional) R camera - maybe if I could find one with a special discount

The price is steep but still much more manageable than other comparable offerings from Leica - and Nikon does not even offer such a thing for their new Z-mount. As I said I probably would buy this lens first and then get a camera .... this would be my path into the Canon R system probably. I owned the EF-mount 1.2/85 II and I absolutely loved this lens already, so the new one MUST BE just so much superior in every way.

Having thought through all of this it finally is very unlikely I ever will spend (have to spend) this amount of money on such a specialised lens in my current part of life, I would rather use that money to make some great holidays with my daughter and show her some places I want her to see as I have really enjoyed them in my past parts of life.

I wasn’t commenting on the performance. It’s excellent as I believe all of Canon’s released RF lenses (except the 35 Macro) have been. Makes me wonder where the 85/1.2 DS will be priced as I’d probably wait on that one if I wanted a portrait lens.

I agree with Peter though and believe they need to put out a better body ASAP because the existing ones leave something to be desired... but I wouldn’t buy any lens before I invested into a camera system.

They certainly need to come out with competitive sensor technology before you make an investment in these new RF lenses. Even if you are already in the Canon ecosystem, I don't see the draw to the new Canon mirrorless bodies. Mirrorless for the sake of mirrorless doesn't make much sense if all they have are the same old 5D and 6D sensors.

    The sample images look great.

I've always been a Nikon user and was pretty set on picking up a Z6 at some point in the future, but Canon's RF lens lineup, esp this new 85mm f1.2, is causing me to seriously rethink....

Well to me the RF lenses are significantly better than the EF lenses. That would be the reason to go to the RF cameras IMO. Like I said, the only one that has been released that I wouldn’t buy is the 35 Macro because it doesn’t hold a candle to the L series lenses (as it shouldn’t at the cost). The 28-70, 24-105, and 50/1.2 are all excellent but the bodies are crap IMO. The sensor in the EOS R (from the 5Dmk4) isn’t bad but it is dated at this point. Even still, it provides a healthy balance of resolution and speed for those that want a bit more than the 24mp sensors but not quite as much as the 40+ Pm sensors.

There are benefits to mirrorless though outside of just being mirrorless IMO. I could go back to using a DSLR as my main camera but I haven’t owned one in years.

It looks good until you realize how heavy the lens is, and how tiny the body is. Admittedly, I've not held one but the photo's of it being used show the unbalanced nature of it (lens weight over 2 lbs) The lens is also (IMHO) vast overkill for the current body its designed to fit on.

The thing is that I don’t believe any of the lenses are really designed for the EOS RP and the EOS R is adequate for most of the lenses. If a person needed more room there’s actually a grip available.

I definitely do not disagree but it doesn't bother me too much. For me, the 85mm RF 1.2/EOS R would replace my current Fuji X-E3/56mm f1.2 combo, which is also pretty imbalanced.

Re: Canon RF 85mm f1.2 Lens

While I don't have any problems with the current R-bodies, size or otherwise, except the sensor of the RP, I hope that Canon will launch something along the lines of the E-M1X with a new sensor. That would be an amzing tool, and a great fit for lenses like the 85/1.2, 50/1.2 and the 28-70/2.

I don't, but as my father pointed out several times: It's more satisfying to dream about a Porsche than a Volkswagen
