Wonderful shots, thanks for showing them to us. Do you shoot RAW or JPG with the X100?

In general I only shoot RAW with the X100 although I must admit that it does a great job in jpg mode too. For example, even using the standard colour modes it can produce some outstanding colour if the conditions are right.

I shot the following pre-dawn at Death Valley and are out of camera jpgs with just levels set for white/black points. They were just supposed to be record shots for use on the MFDB forum where we sometimes post the setup and then final images from a technical camera (Alpa). However I was somewhat shocked at how great the jps were with no post processing other than setting the exposure range in C1 Pro:

I just seem to have discovered the joys of using Aperture (rather than my usual LR) - seems so much easier to edit, zoom, full screen etc on a laptop!

This one was with Auto Enhance:

Not gonna comment on anything particular, but great stuff all around guys!

Winter hasn't arrived, but the days are very short now.
    Trying to use that.

Here's a shot of the Century City Towers in L.A. I took this after viewing the "Beauty Culture" exhibit at the Annenberg Space For Photography, which I highly recommend if you're in the area.

Anyone here using Apple Aperture to process RAW from the X100? I took some shots today with DR=200% and shot JPG+RAW. In LR the RAW would have been a stop underexposed. Aperture, however, appears to be compensating for the DR setting. What is interesting is that sometimes it seems to do a better job than the OOC JPG. For example, both just exported with no adjustments:

Hmm, that's interesting... I use Lightroom 3, and I do notice that my shots do look much brighter on the camera than they do after they've been imported into Lightroom, but they handle being brought back up quite well.

Re: X100 images thread...let's get this party started....

Actually I think this was mainly a one-off. I think the JPGs at DR200 tend to be better overall, for example, they hold better detail of tree branches against a bright section of sky. These tend to get lost somewhat by Aperture's interpretation and indeed by bringing the exposure up in LR. That's what I think for now anyway!

Here's some newer photos from the X100. I'm starting to explore how it handles really low light. It's fun to just get a general exposure and keep your ISO, aperture and shutter set and leave it that way while you wander around, much like I do with film and an M6. Just snap away and use the camera's exposure latitude as a safety net.

Don't post too often, but here are a few from a Nutcracker rehearsal.
Use a D3s and 70-200 on my shoulder and x100 around my neck.
    Makes for a versatile combo.
I generally have to zone and/or manually focus the x100.

    Thanks Lee

This thread appears to be pretty dead.

This camera takes very nice photos, its small, easy to use (although that doesn't seem to be the common thought) and is a pleasure to own. I can see the obvious quality in photos from you and others but it's not getting much attention anymore.

This time last year I was doing this in RAW on a Pentax K5. This year was X100 JPG with auto-levels in Aperture and I think I prefer how they look. ISO 3200, f/4.

    Lee,
You've made some very nice shots there, with lovely light. The first one, in particular, really captures the "mid-Devon" (I presume?) atmosphere very well.
As for getting the x10 - I have to admit to having considered this as well, but I've put the idea to one side. I find that the x100 does what I ask of it so well, that I don't really want to spoil things by having to choose between the two. That road seems to head back towards carrying too much stuff... as I used to with the DSLR kit. I'm just glad to have stopped doing that...!

Knightshayes Estate (National Trust), near Tiverton, 3-4 pm today.

I think the X1-Pro will also have a new camera allure too but I agree - I would have to choose and even then choose between lenses or focal length or ...

Better the X100 with its superb image quality and zoom with the feet or crop if necessary!

    Lee,
Yes, the X-Pro1 is very interesting, but I'm still more inclined to stay with the x100... i.e. keep it simple, and, as you say: zoom with the feet! The return to a reduced number of options is one of the real joys of the x100.

These are some of the best shots I've seen on this site. I've been to the Imperial Palace/Forbidden City as well as the Great Wall. The palace shot and the one I included in the quote below are both publication-worthy IMHO. It is very tough to get GW shots without a lot of people in them - unless you walk a long way, and then you quickly get to parts of the wall that aren't maintained as well. Nice work!

Amazing Great Wall image, Graham - and I can concur that it is difficult at the "hot-spots" in China to get any photo without people!
I'm loving the little X-100 more and more - it really is a nice little "take me with every-where" camera.
It takes amazingly good portraits too!
