Re: Fun with the Fuji X-E1

For those of you don't know, Steven took that image he's pointing at. Nicely done, Kaua.

Kuujinbo, a friend of mine is considering the 50/1.1 with the X-E1, but worries a bit about the mixed reviews that lens gets. How are your experiences with it?

Jorgen,

Not sure if I'm the best one to ask, since I I'm kinda new at photography and have a lot to learn. Not only that, but I don't own any native Fuji lenses anymore. Not bashing the lenses, they're all very good - just a personal preference. With that being said I love the Nokton, and it's on my X-Pro 1 more than any other lens I own.

The close-up shot above was at f1.4, although I do shoot a lot with the lens wide open. I like the softness (and glow depending on the lighting) for portraits. For everything else I stop down to f5.6 and the lens is more than sharp enough for me. And as you know it's a big, heavy lens, but I like how it balances on the X-Pro 1. Never saw the X-E1 in person, so I don't know how much smaller it is, and that might be another thing to consider.

The way I look at it is f1.1 is probably one of the main reasons for considering it in the first place, so get it. :)

Re: Fun with the Fuji X-E1

The X-E1 is so much fun, I had a go at a pano this morning (manually).

I might of overlooked this in the manual, but does anyone know if there is any way to apply (additional) compression to the RAW files?

Re: Fun with the Fuji X-E1

Mine just arrived! Two quick pics of Houston before I have to go out...
Just used the jpg. The camera feels pretty responsive. The body is much lighter than i thought it would be. The zoom lens adds some weight. Overall it feels good in my hands. Shot at f/4, ss- 1/30. ISO 800 I think. Nice out of focus area behind Houston and her ears are a little soft, which is nice shallow DofF for f/4. Will try to play with it some more this weekend. May need to pick up a small fixed lens. If you have any questions, let me know.

Cheers,
Josh

Re: Fun with the Fuji X-E1

My first day with the X-E1; I discovered that by changing the Film Simulaton Mode to Monochrome, the images come up on the LCD in B&W- very cool.--(like the new Leica M).

Even better, I can set image quality to Fine+Raw, which means Jpeg+Raw--then when I download the files into Bridge, I automatically get the image as a B&W Jpeg and a color Raw file side by side.
The Raw files open in Camera Raw and Photoshop without any problems.

Re: Fun with the Fuji X-E1

That is a nice feature; good to see the images in B/W, as it helps me visualize future shots. Glad Fuji included it. I've used it for years on my Nikons and Digital M cameras as well.
