X-T1 first impressions...

I believe Jono resolved his difficulty with the buttons, so perhaps that doesn't count. (switched off intelligent face detection).
Hi There
That's right - David knew . . . . although the guy in the specialist dealer didn't, nor did the Fuji service people!
Someone in the office had turned on intelligent face detection . . . . and it switches off:
Exposure mode
AE lock
AF lock
Crazy

Doug, Jim - the IBIS on the OMD is a thing of splendour and wonder, but for me, personally, almost all my use will be with a zoom, and these do have OIS, I'll stick to using my M lenses on my M . . . except possibly in good light.

Ashwin
Really sorry about your LCD - that sounds like a grand lens collection (do you have some left from X-Pro1 days?)
I'm looking forward to the 18-135 zoom, and possibly the 10-24 as well, then I'll be done! (well, I would rather like the 55 f1.2 .. . . . and maybe the macro  . . . and of course the 16-55 f2.8 would be nice when it arrives ).

Now - where are those gas pills!:chug:

That is untypical, the 18-55mm is generally considered to be excellent, certainly that has been my experience on the X-Pro 1. JPGs will have some in camera software distortion correction, which does a small bit of stretching, you can see this by comparing a raw.

When Jono was going through the green rendering queries in the other thread, this was discussed a little, and we wondered if OIS could also be affecting IQ in some cases. Personally I have not had any such issues. I hope you can try another copy and see if there is any change.
Hi David
quite right - my 18-55 seems to be fine - all of these kit lenses seem to suffer from variation from lens to lens though. Perhaps Fuji less than others?

Well, the defective X-T1 is returned to the dealer, and I await a replacement (probably within the week, possibly next). My awesome dealer (Glazers Camera) provided me with a loaner XE-2, so I remain with an X-camera. Ergonomically, I can immediately tell the difference. The XE-2 is a great camera, but "feels" very different in hand than the X-T1...less confidence inspiring...The EVF is solid, but doesn't have the umph of the X-T1's....At least I have something to shoot, with fast AF, while I wait for the replacement to arrive. I think it was just a terrible coincidence that mine was down for the count....

Jono, I do have the 35 mm f/1.4 lens from the good old days of 2 years back. That's a lens worth keeping...Having shot a few XE-2 shots, I do see a difference in detail between this and the A7, but then again, that's not really why I made the switch.... At least XE-2 RAW files convert in LR5.3 lol

umm, isn't that pretty much everything they make now :D

well, macro isn't there or the XC lenses. Hope they can quickly sort the DOA body. That's always a bummer.
Ha, true....I am a 21/35/50/90 guy, given my rangefinder-way of shooting...The zooms are "new" for me, and I may eventually find my way to a macro, but didn't get along great with the 60 mm lens when I last used Fuji. Being not a huge macro guy means I will probably hold off.

Ah yes, GAS...for me, the only real constant in photography is GAS...

Oh, and my M system, talong with the 645D for nearly 2 years now, with no plans to see either off...

I loved the A7 (IQ truly something, magical), but it didn't feel 100% like a lifetime camera...The Fuji's have their issues, but the User experience is getting awefully close to something I can really sink my teeth into for some time....

I have to say, I really like to hear you say this - there's so much concentration on 100% detail and file size . . . . but to me the best camera is . . . erm . . . . the best camera (maybe we should all cut the crap and buy the Nikon F6!)

Thanks, Jono...An F6...yes, nearing perfection, that camera is. Jono, it has taken some time, but I do come around now and again :)

The only other camera, oddly, that inspired me as such, was the RX1R...great piece of kit. The A7 system is truly a home run at many levels, technologically in particular, but the reason I got into the Leica M's, and why I have stayed there, has so much to do with how enjoyable those cameras are to use in daily shooting. Certainly, they are not for everyone, nor is the X-T1, but there's a certain appeal.

Once I have the X-T1 back, I am really looking forward to allowing myself to explore the camera's ergonomics and controls fully. I love having full control over image parameters at the tips of my fingers.... I only wish the ISO dial wouldn't lock as it does, but I suspect a bit of clear tape may fix that issue :)

HAH!
Welcome Ashwin
You're more precipitate than me (I still have my A7 and an E-M1), I'm planning to make a final decision by the end of the month when the Fuji special deals in the UK run out.

No doubt the ergonomics of the Fuji have me sold. Love to see all that stuff at a glance.

Which lenses?
Jono, do I have this right? £100 cashback on lenses, and a further £100 if you buy 2 lenses?

I just didn't like the A7r - I still have the A7 (and the E-M1), and I'm still thinking about which camera I'm going to end up with.

I thought that about the ISO dial - but actually, I realise, I don't change the ISO that often - certainly not on a shot to shot basis - but the advantage of being able to see what you've done on the top plate is really good. I know it's been criticised, but I reckon they've done good (I suppose an ideal would have been to do it as the shutter speed, so it locked into Auto, but not for individual speeds).

That's right - so, £300 if you buy 2 lenses (it's only £500 if you buy 4 lenses).

There's also an oddly interesting deal with the X-Pro1 . . . £899 with the 18mm lens (i.e. £460 for the body which was selling for over a grand) PLUS a free lens up to £500 - so, effectively a free body . . . . . if you wanted one!

Resistance is futile . . .

Okay, I have to disagree with you two now. FM2n was my ideal camera :).

(and for the record, the X-T1 seems to get closest to my pipe dream of an FM2D :) )

Ruh roh, Scooby. Camera appears to be dead on arrival!

Just took the camera out for fsecnd use today, and about 10 shots in to shooting today (in my office), and the rear LCD viewfinder went grey, then died...I tried resetting the camera, changing view mode, chancing my SD card. Everything works if I look through the EVF, but no rear LCD operation is possible. Damn...Back to the camera store I go....hopefully a replacement will be in order soon....

It's literally been sitting in my camera bag overnight...drats!
Your Leica MM taking out some hostility on the new arrival?

If you are into the manual dials, then I think it is an excellent choice. In my case, I found I've come to actually prefer the mode dial and faceless knob twiddling to change aperture and shutter speed so I was kinda swimming upstream with the Fuji :D

The RX1r has won a spot in my heart, as much as I keep trying to convince myself that I don't need it and that there are better choices. It has its quirks, but seems to consistently give me the best results. Go figure...

You're just kidding yourself Todd :) . . . . X-T1 and an RX-10 - the perfect combination :)

HI Doug
I think I was quoting Jörgen - I've never owned an F6, or an FE, or an FM2n . . but I did love my F100, and the Contax RTSII as well.

The Fuji isn't either of these things (although it certainly looks like a mini RTS II). But it does work rather like one. Cameras come and go so fast these days, but there are digital icons - Olympus E1 for example. The X-T1 certainly has a little fairy dust about it.

Oops, I must have misread.

But I agree.

Pass the fairy dust.

It does feel in hand quite similar to my FM2 (Smaller than my F2AS by a fair bit which is good).

RTS II? You've got me there.

My particular camera wasn't quite sprinkled with fairy dust (rather, it probably needed an exorcism), but I hope my XT-1 comes to me in a happier state...needless to say, I am testing it out in the camera store this time around...

Seriously though, I should be ready to roll in style soon enough, and looking forward to spreading whatever pixie dust is available to be spread...

Brad.

I just got my X-T1 and have been playing with it today. I have not had a chance to try any REAL focus tracking shots, but did find two things really interesting. Turning on the "High Performance" mode under power management and also taking the size of the focus patch down really improved autofocus speed and accuracy.

The default is HP off and the medium focus patch.

How was your's set-up for the lacrosse test?

I only have two "small" systems - Fuji X cameras and the RX1r. I agree that the RX1 is exceptional and a joy to use. It has "mojo" IMHO if that means anything. Ditto the Fuji X, the current epitome of which is the X-T1.
