I have an MCE drive kit that allows replacing the optical drive in your MBP with a second SATA HD or SSD. It includes an external case to mount the optical drive in so you can use it as an external. This cost $100 new, includes all the screws and cables, and works perfectly.

I have the OWC one (same thing). It is THE best upgrade I have done to my old MacBook Pro. System files on SSD and "Home" folder on a 7200RPM HDD, taking advantages of SSD's speed and traditional HDD's capacity & price.
