Gear64 contacted me claiming to be "Tom from Sweden" about selling me lighting equipment (from the same email address as you have listed...) quite the world traveler I guess.

Anyways, yeah it seems like a total scam

Interesting, I was not the only person to be contacted by him to defraud then.

You need AT LEAST two kids for me to buy from someone from an internet forum. Happily married is optional.

maybe it's time to start a thread that says "possible fraud alert" Be aware of this person or anything close to this type message here at this forum... watch for email or texts. There are some obvious points of alarm in this discussion. I won't discuss them though, because I do not want to help fraud numnuts to become better at what they do.

Canada or Italy via Nigeria maybe...

I would add to that scam alert thread, a couple of web sites that are suspicious.

Guy, make that 3 formal complaints.

He contacted me saying he was Tom from Canada offering to sell me a Fuji X100s. I asked where in Canada, since I'm doing a road trip through Canada so I might be able to grab it locally. He ignored the question, sent me pictures of an X100. I've told him no thanks, since it looked fishy.

You will not be receiving e-mails through the forum any more from gear64. Also folks use the report to moderator as that goes to all of the mods. We just get to stuff faster that way.

Thanks everyone

just don't be too naive to think the problem is really fixed. These people just move to another IP block, and get a new username, and it's back to the business of trying to defraud unsuspecting individuals. NEVER let your guard down. If you do, you might just be scammed. Food for thought.

Another angle they use is to crack passwords on accounts that are inactive, then suddenly you think you are dealing with one person, but in reality, it's not them at all-

Verrrry interesting !!

I have had a message from the same email address, offering to sell me a Typ 240 that I had put a WTB ad for. However, this person signed their name s "Tom from Sweden". This was last week. And, of course, I would be expected to send them the money by Bank transfer etc, not Paypal.
I am not suggesting that the person who communicated with me is committing any fraud, but the whole thing is a bit too suspicious....

Funny, that. It is identical- almost word for word- to the one I received. Nice when you can run off multiple copies of a response, and offer to sell whatever someone wants to buy ! It certainly smells funny, but who knows ? Maybe the seller owns a Camera store...

I too got a PM response from jose1 (in Spain) very recently (a newly registered member), to a WTB ad I posted. The discussion didn't get as far as to prompt a response like those posted above, but right off the bat, something didn't seem right and when I stated which version of the item I desired, the communication quickly ended.

So unfortunate these things happen, yet at the same time it's wonderful to have such a nice community here that keeps others informed of possible situations of wrong doing and are willing to share their experiences.

Haha
It must be a multi-national store...
Tom was in Canada, Jose was in Spain.

I've gotten the same response from a WTB ad as well from Tom ... he first said that he only took money gram or bank deposit and when I said no, he gave the same response:
