Well Jono mine's here and in my hands as I type. What's not to like?? Even typing isn't too bad and I'm a touch typer though often too fast. This will slow me down a bit. A week early so I'm happy. Camera connector out about 4-6 weeks.

My extra (my first extra went to Jono, my second extra went to my mother so I'm back to no extra LOL) camera connector kit took about 1/2 the indicated time....so there is some hope.

Have fun. The connector kit maybe not that exciting (would like to hear from you).

Thanks Uwe. I'm a member of Vimeo but only have the first little lens test I tried with GF1 uploaded. I tried it last night with Touch and found I couldn't watch a number of recent videos from Gs, 5 and 7 Ds. I thought Vimeo had
converted so that all was watchable on Ipad Iphone. Some were-- does this
have anything to do with what format they were uploaded in?

Edit: just tried Vimeo with Ipad and can view everything. Could they not be all optimized for Iphone/Touch.?
Edit: just tried Vimeo with Ipad and can view everything. Even an old old one I shot with G9 so maybe not optimized for Iphone/touch

We'd better put it all down to excitement over that drink I definitely owe you. Our consolation is that we do have the iPad that Terry kindly sent us, and today the itunes store finally put on the apple applications - ibooks is so much nicer than the kindle reader it isn't true . . . so then there was a happy hour working out how to get the kindle books into ibooks - not strictly legit perhaps, but having paid for them it did seem reasonable,

Currently, iBooks in the UK has 16,000 free books, and nothing to pay for! (mostly the Gutenberg press stuff). It's so easy to put DRM free ipub books in there though (and we have plenty of those), so it's not a problem. I guess the modern stuff will appear at silly prices on Friday (release date for the ipad).

    All rather exciting really

'Tis--exciting that is. I've frittered an afternoon away

I have Kindle, Stanza (very nice and I understand Amazon has bought them), Barnes and Noble and Kobo just to try all of them (had them on Touch) plus Ibooks. Haven't really read anything but news so can't say much about reading on Ipad yet

    Hah!
Well, TNT clearly slipped up, and ours just arrived this morning - hooray. Now, of course, O2 can't keep up with the rush of registrations zzzzzzz.

Not getting an iPad at this time. For engineering purposes we already have one at Mosync (the mobile software company I freelance for), and for personal use it's not money wisely spent for me right now.

Suddenly it's all come to life here. The BBC iplayer works like a dream (even over 3G), iBooks has 16000 free books (and newer ones to pay for at a sensible price). Iworks apps are here, and they work. Then there's worms HD

Guess everyone there is happy about a day early. I had read that the stores will open an hour early tomorrow. Is it expected that there will be big crowds there as there was in the US?

I think you'll enjoy it. I told someone that I like it more than I expected and I had high expectations. I think it will depend upon how one makes use of it though.

I really don't use it that much. But using it to show photos and videos to other people is a lot of fun and my main use of it. If I carry a camera I also have the iPad with me.

Well we're loving ours. iBooks is fab, and having all the Gutenberg press there and free is lovely.

Incidentally, if you're like me and like to have pretty book covers for these books, you can change the artwork in iTunes; however! To get it to show on your bookshelf on the ipad you need to uncheck iBooks, sync, then check iBooks and sync again.

    Re: IPad Discussions

I have never used display connections with laptop, etc so I'm a bit challenged in knowing what to buy to use the new Netflix app (US) to view the available movies for streaming on the TV. I researched as much as possible but am getting differing ideas. If one uses the Ipad VGA dock connector adapter do you then need to also use a VGA cable in addition-that's how I understood it. So am I better off with Apple coomposite or component cable (which the Apple store says is compatible with Ipad)? In addition I can't figure out the difference between composite and component cables LOL

I understand I can't mirror the Ipad just watch movies and video, Netflix upgraded their app to allow this but I read on one of the Appke forums that using the iPad VGA adapter you might only see perhaps a 1/4 if screen sized 26" or so and read on another forum that the poster was happy enough watching on a 54" screen. So-----i'm totally confused now.

    Re: IPad Discussions

    1. Try first whether you have fun using Netflix online. I think I have a fast network but sometimes have delays. I use Netflix a lot otherwise (we have no TV subscription and only Netflix)

    2. I think if you use Composite you just get SD (not HD) resolution

    3. Best would be a HDMI connection but did not find one so far.

Thanks Uwe. We have had Netflix for a quite long time and have excellent overnight service when we take advantage of it. I think I will just wait and see how things develop with movies and video. If I want to watch some of my obscure movies that DAvid might just not love that much and they are available streaming I'll just watch them on Ipad myself.

    Perfect. Also good for previews.

I also forgot that the VGA connector does not transfer the sound.

I believe Netflix online is only SD anyways. Another option is to run Netflix through Wii or xBox if you have one.

Either way, I have also disconnected my cable, and use Netflix and off-the-air TV. If you're not into sports, you don't need cable anymore ;-)

Me too. I don't want DSL and other choices aren't great.

Don't have either mentioned, didn't replace Tivo which also handles streaming. I'll stick with DVDs for the most part for the time being and my own strange movie choices that no one else really cares about-if they are streaming in Ipad.

Curious how people are watching Netflix with it. Do you attach a VGA cable to it?

Interesting app ? iPad as a thin client for Windoze.

Wonder how many iPad users have a Windows computer though.

I don't know how many, but lots I'd have thought - there are lots of good clients though, the logmein app is particularly good - the Wyse RDP client isn't bad either.

We've been using it to log in to client servers for support purposes when away - works well.

This would be very important in the corporate environment. If I had any hope of ever having an iPad instead of a laptop for my work needs it would need something like citrix to get into the corporate network. Right now i just travel with my blackberry but at times it can be very challenging when on the road needing to do a conference call that will utilize PowerPoint or word docs. For security reasons, I can't simply email the attachments to my personal email.

Jobs: “I’ll tell you a secret. It began with the tablet. Jobs first charged his staff with developing a tablet, but after seeing their first efforts decided the way to go was a phone. “My God, I said, this would make a great phone … so we shelved the tablet and built the iPhone.

    Re: IPad Discussions

Well, I've joined the brethren, picked up a 64GB WiFi iPad on the weekend. I hadn't been overly interested in it until I saw that the iWork suite was available and went through the videos of them, and it finally made sense to go for it as I do a fair bit of writing and presenting. I also bought the keyboard dock, although I'm finding using the on-screen keyboard, especially in landscape, quite usable.

I jailbroke it (Spirit) so I can have SBSettings and Backgrounder etc, but I have to say I'm looking forward to OS4 to see the improvements, especially on the faster processor (I currently have an iPhone 3G). It also sports a full Invisible Shield, as do all of my cameras, iPhone etc.

I've got a camera kit on order but I'm really not sure it'll get too much use, although I do like using the iPad as a photo viewer and have my full iPhoto library on it. I'm pretty firmly entrenched in my CS4 PP routine, so other than fooling around with some of the iPad apps like Photogene, it doesn't really make sense to me for image manipulation.

I can see though that the apps are only going to get better and better so it should be an exciting time ahead!

    Ciao,

Here's an interesting story: AT&T has announced an end to its unlimited 3G data plans. http://www.theatlantic.com/business/...he-ipad/57597/

People who intended to rely on 3G access for their iPads are going to be seriously pissed off about this. And I think the timing of this announcement gives them the right to be. "Buy our new device and you'll be able to get these great month to month data plans, no contract required, etc."

Well for the first month or two, anyway.

If youve already bought a 3G plan with unlimited you are grandfathered.

    Here is some more analysis:

As long as you keep it in effect. One of the attractions of the original deal was that you could activate the 3G plan whenever you want, for a month or two, and then stop. Now, if you stop, grandfather dies.

Agree, I was planning on always keeping mine. Chances are if you are a casual user and aren't going to always keep the data going then you probably won't go over the limit. In my first month with a ton of travel and a ton of use it doesn't seem as though I went over the 2GB that would be alotted.

Actually, on the phone side everyone I know would be able to reduce their rates under the new plans.

There is one big unknown. With Skype, video conference, pandora and multitasking what will happen to useage rates?

Finally out in the wild there are a ton of AT&T hotspots that would all be free (how far can you walk without seeing a starbucks?)

    Re: IPad Discussions

I was out shooting at Morro Bay, and didn't know about the changes, and renewed my $30/month deal. If I had known, I would have opted for the $25/2GB plan.

In the first month I had used 800MB. As Terry says, (and per AT&T's PR) I think very few people need 5GB.

Then again, I'm also waiting for Monday, and see what the world brings us ;-)

As of now, I think the Sprint/EVO4G is the way to go. We'll see...

    Re: IPad Discussions

I think I am going to buy this keyboard. I've debated about the dock/keyboard but the charger works fine for me. There are also times I'd like a regular keyboard with my laptop(now I use a large USB one and its often not where I'm working untethered to my desktop) so, after I checked it works okay with Win, think it would be useful for me. I do most email on the Ipad now and though I'm pretty good with the onscreen keyboard in landscape, still there are times I'd like s "real" keyboard LOL

    Re: IPad Discussions

    Hi There
    Great blog Uwe.
Just another point of view - we tried both keyboards (already having several bluetooth keyboards). For casual use I find the onscreen keyboard fine - for more concerted use I really like the keyboard / dock arrangement, obviously, it's convenient that it charges it at the same time (rather than draining the charge). But for doing emails etc. it's really good; at work I have my laptop at one side, a 24" monitor in front (with a bluetooth keyboard and mouse), then on the left I have the ipad in a keyboard dock, and I use that for emails etc. it takes up less room than the ipad+bluetooth keyboard, and if I want to use it landscape I can just grab it and put it on the desk. The special home, search, keyboard and other keys are great (of course, you don't get them on the bluetooth keyboard either).

So, all in all, we've settled for the dock keyboard (FWIW)

    all the best

    Just this guy you know

Jono, I agree with your assesment. I have both keyboards but much prefer the docking version. Cheers!

I too like this version better, especially for the iPad-specific keys. I really wish, however, that you could mount the iPad horizontally on such a keyboard. For many of the typing-intensive tasks I do, I prefer to use the iPad horizontally.

    Cheers,

    Re: IPad Discussions

I finally got my Apple case today. What a difference it makes for me. I can type easily and pretty fast even in my lap with leg crossed or feet up or for sure at table. Watching a video is much nicer and reading more natural in portrait like a book or in landscape with the tilt. I have my doubts now if I need a keyboard but suspect if I buy one if will be the dock/charger for all the reasons others have given. This or something like it is really the accessory to have for the Ipad-- not for the cover and safekeeping but to add to the usability.

I got my dodocase on Saturday, and like it a lot. I still have the Apple case as well, and will use both depending on the circumstance.

Interesting case ... I like the classic design, like the Moleskine notebooks. Their video on how they manufacture it is also interesting.
