There is a kindle app for the iPad - do you have books through Amazon in the UK?

There are a ton of public domain books that they are going to make available so perhaps you will have the iBookstore for these - although not sure if you want to go back and read some of the classic novels.

    Re: IPad Discussions

I wonder if they will have Stanza app available for Ipad. I understand it has been bought by Amazon and looks much like the Kindle app (though I like it a bit better). If so--you can buy other ebooks available through other sellers and read on Touch and Iphone. You need to order/download through computer, then they have a PC and Mac software that allows you to move to Touch (I haven't tried it yet to be truthful--have only dled classics and public domain ebooks to try the app). If so, that might be something useful.

I will say one of my favorite apps for the Iphone/Touch is the Pandora app. I listen with a net radio to Pandora in one room, but found with the app I can listen to Pandora with the Touch by using either a cable (RCA or other) to radios, sound system, powered speakers, etc. It opened that up for use up by the pool, anywhere in the house, anywhere I have wifi (I have Touch).

    Diane, Terry
thank you - I was reading about the kindle app - they've not been around too long here (I have a Sony book reader). I just fancied books . . . . . on the other hand, when do I get time to read

    Hi Uwe
Well, as it has a microphone, and it'll run all the iphone apps, then it certainly should work okay.

    Terry,

Was the UPS guy late? I thought we'd hear from you this morning. Great move traveling to the east coast for that three hour head start. All the kids here in California must be very jealous.

Watched an unboxing on YOutube last night (think it was Stephen Fry) and saw that you get no ear buds. So--I guess you have to buy a set with a mic to use phone, other apps???

    How 'fun' is it??

    Re: IPad Discussions

Now for a little bad news. I just got an email from a friend who bought an iPad to use on an upcoming trip. When he tried to set it up, he discovered that you can't set up your iPad unless you're running Snow Leopard. (Mac requirement: "Mac OS X v10.5.8 or later.") Apparently his home Mac is too old to run 10.5.8.

So much for the computer for people who don't want to use a computer. You can use the iPad, but you'll need one of those outdated things to set it up.

Can he get to an Apple store. They were setting them up for people right in the store. It takes a couple of seconds. I think what you really need is iTunes 9. Ipad can be used by a windows user as well.

    Re: IPad Discussions

I bet so too-- that all it needs is Itunes 9.1. I tried inadvertently to DL
an Ipad app last night (PC) and got a message that I needed Itunes 9.1.
Usually with an Itunes upgrade you don't have to go through a DL and install
but had to do that with 9.1. (I don't have an Ipad--just covet a bit and will
    wait a bit).

There was a very good article this afternoon on it replacing a laptop for medium productivity. He had written the article on it wtb $69 Bluetooth keyboard using new app Page--think article was in Wall Street Journal

Edit: sorry for formatting and typos. Seat from Touch

Apps that have been built/rebuilt specifically for the ipad are fantastic and this screen size just opens up a whole new realm of using the Web. The interaction is just different than moving a mouse around. Much better than the iPhone.

When it was first announced, I was more focused on what it won't do/what I wish it would do. Now I am starting to think about all the things I could do with it and how it could make my life easier.

I am never an early adopter of anything new, I always seem to wait a few months for the crash test dummies to report their findings and the kinks to be worked out. I finally got an iPhone about 3 months ago. But this iPad thingy is already starting to become irresistible.

One thing to not worry about is the lack of multitasking. I'm sure it will come in time, but the iPad is so quick it's not a big inconvenience to switch apps.

    Re: IPad Discussions

I spend a half hour trying one out at Best Buy today. They had a lot in stock even mid afternoon except for the 16gb model. It is indeed a lot like a big iPhone and is smaller than I thought it would be. I did like it a lot, very good quality and fun. Not that I need one but it's tempting for sure.

But it seems pointless to buy one with no 3G on it. The Best Buy guys said the 3G model will come on April 12.

    Re: IPad Discussions

Has anyone found a PDF viewer that doesn't crash? Every one I've tried has been very flaky and either crashes immediately with any decent sized file or blows up on upload of files.

Big deal for me as I hope to leverage this as a portable doc library.

Had a few crashes so far with 3rd party apps - seems like some aren't well tested yet.

I ordered the 3G version and am waiting patiently for that. In the meantime my Apple "dealer" played a cruel trick on me this morning and offered me a 64gb WiFi version he had on hold for me! Suffice to say this puppies mine too.

Forums are a dream to view on the iPad vs iPhone. Great screen!

Looks like Goodreader $0.99 is doing a good job. I sell e-books as PDF so it is very important to me.

Tested briefly a 200 pages (complex layout) and 600 pages (medium complex layout) and they worked at first sight. Reading is very good. Goodreader even unzips files (I deliver as ZIP).

Yes, I did. It's sad that Douglas isn't here to see it. I met him years ago and he signed my copy of the collection. I will never sell that.

I think Apple should have made a deal to include The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy rather than Winnie the Pooh bundled on the iPad. Douglas would have loved that.

I actually thought Winnie the Pooh was sort of brilliant to:

    a) show this can work with Illustrated children's books
    b) het kids hooked inthe ipad early on.

Netflix has an app: they claim you can stream movies. It's hard to imagine that a typical WIFI connection is fast enough, but I'm sure Terry will let us know. If it works, it will be a great feature. For nine dollars a month you can watch all the brain-rotting movies you want.

    Here's a sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nILql1zo5vE

I tried it and it seems to be ok.

Just an observation, the iPad is reasonable at $499 but the top model at $829 approaches the $999 price of a refurbished 13" MacBook Pro.

And don't forget, this is 1st generation hardware, there will surely be an update in 2011 and likely a price cut as well. Clever Apple marketing as usual.

It is not cheap. A notebook computer can do more but the reading experience is very bad compared to the iPad. Everything reading is great. I saw in 1999 one of the first e-book readers:

    -low res
    -bulky
    -BW
    -no real networking

time seems right now and the Apple factor on top.
