Re: IPad Discussions Simple Question - No Answer So Far??

i'd like to use my IPad as a photo display, to show groups of photos, say photo essays, and folios. the photos need to be in a set order. no matter how i organize them in my folder i import from through itunes, they get shuffled. it is such a simple thing, i just want my order of photos. I am going through the built in photo App, which otherwise works well. I don't want to buy ilife, to use iphoto, i tried iphoto 08 and it is another mind-numbing program. why do they make these simple things so complicatedhttp://forum.getdpi.com/forum/images/smilies/angry.gif

you guys are much more tech than me, any solutions? and yes, i tried numbering the files. - 001.jpg, 002.jpg, etc. doesn't work.

I think iPhoto may default to date order from the exif. I don't know a way of importing a preexisting slideshow. That being said, I'm currently playing with Keynote and creating a slideshow in the App. If you do that, you can keep them in the correct order. There may be other apps or ways to do this but I think it will take some time. Just like we have blurb for doing book publishing in hard copy, I do envision seeing photo books show up in a format that can be loaded into the iBook reader or similar app.

I think that the tablet competition would have been a lot more effective over the years if PC manufacturers got out of the mindset of building nasty crappy plastic pieces of cheap junk rather than learning from the industrial design and superb quality and feel that Apple manage to achieve.

This applies to laptops and desktops too. I get sent a number of PCs for my day job - typically Dell's finest - and they are without exception cheap and plastic feeling. The NetBook I have is abysmal (I call it my CrapBook or CheapBook). Performance typically is fine but build typically is cheap unless you buy a specialist box. By contrast, I spend my own personal money on Apple hardware, even if more expensive for the same hardware configuration.

Pick up an iPad and you'll get an immediate feeling that you've got a quality piece of technology in your hands. Nobody I've showed mine to has had anything less than an 'oohhh, must have' reaction to it.

Still, it's not perfect. Absence of Flash is a pain :banghead::banghead:
Yes, I had an Asus EE PC for a while, it was like a toy. Actually, it WAS a toy. It's all about mass production, injection molding, and ultra low cost.

Apple has definitely shown the way with their machined enclosures, going back to the original G5 towers. But even their earlier plastic/metal frame laptop designs were better than the typical PC laptops (speaking of the Wall Street, Lombard and Pismo Powerbooks.) The Titanium PowerBook followed, which was another step forward but had wear issues.

The machined unibody MacBook Pro can't be topped, but it costs significantly more to produce than injection molding. It's a price I will gladly pay.

Still haven't missed flash. Its best use is when I want to exercise my MacBook fans. :)

Terry, that is exactly what i have been working on..... I am going to sell E-books of my work, through various outlets. I want them to display on the Ipad, ideally available through the Ibookstore. Converting to PDF's is no problem so far, save for the fact that 2 page spreads are cut in half, so i have to redesign for that. Goodreader displays pdf's nicely, though the importing into is a kludge. EPub makes mincemeat of my nicely laid out pages, so that is a work in progress for sure......

Have you tried doing photo-books in epub?

-Josef

BTW, am also designing magazines of my work, (and others in the future, first issue is up at MagCloud, a really great service so far.... like a Lulu or Blurbs, but for mags instead of books...) see- http://magcloud.com/browse/Issue/72725

I export sequenced image files from the SlideShow module or using Export from Lightroom into JPEGs as slide shows/folios/photo books. The file names include a numeric sequence so they sort propely by name. They go into a defined "iPod Photo Show" folder on my computer. iTunes is set to upload all photos and subfolders of photos from that location.

Everything plays in the named order with the standard Photo player. Works perfectly and is simple to achieve.

I'm interested in this as well. One service I saw requires you to create a Word document with your book layout and converts that to e-pub. You could use Pages to do all the layout work, then export as Word, then run it through their tool.

But I'm just getting started on this ... I'm interested to what information you've found.

Sorry folks not in the US. Looks like we are buying too many iPads and Apple has pushed the international launch off for a month.

Yesterday I went to change my 3G order from 32gb to to 64gb. I left the original order in place and just added a second order into the system. Figured i would go back in and cancel the original order once I knew the 64gb order was in place. Well, Apple wrote to me hours later that they cancelled the order because there were more than the two allotted on my account (including the original wifi version). So, they are pretty strictly monitoring who is buying too many. So, more evidence of major supply constraints.

Yes, I called the local store yesterday to buy six, and they said they were out; and they have a limit of two per person per day...but if I talked to the business sales rep they might waive it. Waiting for a phone call this morning...

Grumble Grumble - I know that I shouldn't complain (thanks to Terry), but we were hoping to get ours soon at least. Now it's beginning to look like late May / early June

I was thinking about you (with yours passing around the table at your meeting last week) when I read about this delay this morning LOL. Here I am trying NOT to succumb--and youall are waiting patiently (not!!!!).

thank you!

One of my Apple buddies brought his to our Tuesday Night dinner yesterday so I had a good half hour or more to experiment with it. Quite a compelling piece of equipment for viewing photographs and books!

Yea I was not going for one either but walked in the store with my wife and bam she said buy it for her. I did but I may steal it back. LOL

I agree the screen is really really nice for images and everything else.

Actually it looks like it will be a house Ipad for when she is not traveling which maybe kind of nice to have lying around. Beats coming into my office sometimes

Godfrey: It is wonderful for viewing photos, save for the fact that i still can't organize them in the order i want. I'll figure it out eventually, it is not intuitive that way. I load them double size - 2048 ppi on the long side, at 132 ppi, that way i can impress folks by using the finger movements to blow them up...... pdf's are easily viewed by GoodReader, although it looks like i will have to redesign to get rid of double-page spreads, as they get broken up into 2 pages. Unfortunately the ibookstore does not take pdf's. So if i make pdf's, then it is a kludge for folks to get them into the Ipad. Now E-pubs would be the holy grail, as it is supported by the ibookstore, as well as other online bookstores. Using Calibre to convert, made a mess of the files. and there are so many setting/variables you can play with, that it will take some time to see if epubs can be made to work with photo-books. There are a few epub photobooks up in Ibooks, yet they don't work quite right either. the best thing would be to make an app that could be used as a template, i have an idea for one, but i am not a software developer and don't have the big bucks to have one made right yet.

what have you found? I can email you the pdf of my magazine if you want.

Jono,
although the thought bubble from the cat about not scratching the iPad may be mostly true, I would still urge folks a bit caution. The glass (generally not scratched with anything softer than quartz....sand), has an oleophobic coating to help get rid of smudges and hand oils easily. That could get scratched, making cleaning a bit less easy. But I seriously doubt that the refined Caspar would do any serious harm ;-)

Terry,
Like that solution....now if they only made a sleek, portable copier to go with it ;-)
