I plan on asking Apple (when they open in the morning) for a RA # for my Ipad 3G. Yea, it is cool but I am out $1,000 and I don't "get it".

Other than a cool new "toy", does it do something (business application, making $$) that yout IPhone/PC does not?

Cheers!

Let me explain why I got an iPad.

1. I don't have or want an iPhone (but I have an iPod Touch)

2. I want to show photos and videos when ever needed.

3. That is why I have the iPad nearly always in my bag. The iPod Touch does not cut it really and a Notebook computer is quite a bit bigger.

4. That I can browse, check email and maps is just a bonus for me.

Much better for photos, movies, web, email, reading than an iPhone and much more convenient than traveling with a laptop (I travel a lot).

Posting on this thread being made at 35,000 feet with wifi and iPad comfortably on tray table.

I took mine back today after a week with it. I prefer my iPhone as a mobile device due to it's s handholdability and it's car friendly. I have a Mac Pro for my home computer and it's all I need. If I traveled more I'd get a MacBook Pro, the iPad is too limited for me

I know it works for some people but I just didn't find it compelling enough to keep. Also had some problems with thepinch zoom being buggy at times and found the screen a little hard on the eyes for reading ebooks. A matte screen would have been better IMHO

I've had my 3G version for a couple of weeks now.
- Perfect for email/web usage
- The BEST portable device to view movies and photos
- with the right App, it's better than my desktop to view PDF files (Now I have my technical books with me)

I think we should keep in mind, this device has only been out for about 45 days! I believe, we will see some amazing Apps hitting the market that can utilize this device to it's fullest.

I fully understand, as an early adapter, I've paid too much for the device. And, I also knew this is NOT a laptop replacement. For me, it has surpassed my expectation, and much more.

These are a few Apps, which can not be run on other devices as effectively...
- Magic Piano
- AirVideo
- 1Password
- Star Walk for iPad
- GoodReader
- Things
- The Elements

As many have said, the Apps are the key. And Apple has managed to give developers an almost perfect (yet limited?) user interface to design their apps. Once, the universities start putting their content (lectures) up, I think this little device (and others in this format) will change how we LEARN.

After using it first few days, I was in same boat and was seriously thinking returning it. But after using it for few more days, downloading my kindle books, I realized I seldom use laptop/PC now. 70% of my tasks can be done from ipad and I only use PC/laptop when I need to use real computing stuff like Lightroom, Word/exel work etc.

Thanks to ipad, I am now thinking of selling my Dell Laptop and going for imac, as all my portable/mobility needs are now handled by ipad

Actually I sometimes think a 7" screen would even be a better compromise. iPhone too small, iPad good size but harder to carry everywhere.

I have an iPhone which has to be always in my pocket already. I'd wish a device for to show my portfolio here or there but the iPad is too small for that, and the resolution of 1,024 x 768 pixels can't compete with my 17" MBP.

Regarding the internet the whole industry has anyway Flash based websites, including my own one ;). The iPad comes without this function and this limitation really sucks!

I know about the critics on flash, let's not discuss it again, but the problem without Flash is a fact.

and so on...

Mine ( 64gig and 3GS ) arrives later this month - all I want it to do is allow me to get email and respond, surf the the net in any room in the house or my offices , or my car or on the plane, control my music system and allow me to have my books, magazines, journals and periodicals, music - as well as Bloomberg with me all the time. I cant get this functionality from a laptop which is clunky to had hold and runs out of power in a blink - I can also put some of my photos on it to show off -:)

of course this is a very dumbed down version of what will be around in a few years time- who cares though because it is a very smart personal library and controller now.

I dont get the JAVA battle war blah blah..but then again - I dont like JAVA much anyway - as soon as any photographers site starts making me wait for yet another clunky Java scenario- I just click away to somewhere else. eg the ZARA site was absolutely frustrating and the Levis site was intrusive with ts bongo crappy music loop...it is all so old tech and corporate cool - eeeeeew. designed by a not cool designers - all that stuf is going to get blown away..

this device is made for people who spend a lot of time reading stuff delivered electronically over the web , people who have to read a lot ..all the time..it frees them from having to sit at a place and stare at a clunky computer screen at a place - like the computer tells you where you have to be to look and surf and communicate ...which is over engineered for reading - and ergonomically dangerous to boot. it also makes it easier to get messages and correspondence anywhere all the time - avoiding the squinty eyed where are my reading glasses again look. you get when trying to do this stuff with an Iphone ( or worse - a Blackberry)

I do wish that they had given us a choice re matte screen.

I dont want it to be a substitute for a laptop. I dont want it to be a flat screen mac I dont want it to have excel or word or photoshop built in. I do want it to be a nice software MIDI controller interface for Studio Pro, Prologic and Cubase.

thats why I am looking forward to delivery.:)

Peter, mine is due later this month also. You've pretty well hit
the nail on the head for my expectations for use.

The coming new iPhone is reportedly going to have the same A4 processor and ram as the ipad, as well as a pixel doubled 980x640 display which is close to the iPad's 1024x768 display.

This means it will be much more of a mini iPad than the current iPhone. Seems like the apps will be much more alike on these two devices (big advantage to iPhone = PHONE and superior portability)

the new iPhone is supposed to be announced June 7; here we go again !

My issue with the Iphone here is that AT&T has poor coverage. I checked even where i live and it's just within Edge not 3G and it just doesn't have much presence in this area. And it's just too small to do a lot of reading on (tho I do but I'm going to go blind or throw my index finger out LOL). I'll carry the Touch day to day for lots of things but not for the same things I'll use the Ipad for mostly at home and traveling

I have had mine going on 3 weeks now.

Do you HAVE to have it....no.

Is it worth the money....yes I think so.

With the new interface, it browses the web and web magazines much better than a laptop and deals with pictures, books much better than a iphone. Its a great in-between device and the beginning of a new way to use a computer. If you do any computing at all it will not replace your computer, at least not these first versions but I suspect thats where its all headed.

We can also live without HD television but life wouldn't be near as fun.:)

I wouldn't mind a 5-6"/10 oz form factor in a mobile device, as long as I only have to bring one device. Bring it on.

I am going to wait for some months, to see if Apple will lower the prices, as they did with the IPhone.

Considering the sales and waiting list, it may not happen sooner though...there is no driver for apple to reduce the prices
I was going wait a bit also but decided that what you said is about true. It will be a good while to catch supply up with demand and until then, no driver to reduce the price.
