Which close-up lenses for cheapo macro?

Hi,
I'd like to add a 77mm closeup filter to my camera bag for a simple way to do macro shooting. I understand that Canon's close-up filters are two-element like Nikon's (which I have but those are 62 mm only) and thus very good, but expensive at about $150.

What about other makers like B+W, Heliopan, Hoya, does anyone have experiences to share?

I have tried the Canon close up filter and it's pretty good but I find extension tubes to be a much better option for myself. I use my tubes all the time with all of my lenses and I feel the image quality is a bit better with the tubes over the filter as well.
