    Aperture 3 is here

Hmmmm...support for the G1 and GH1 added but not the GF1 or the Oly m4/3. What are they thinking!

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

I was working on a book with a friend this weekend and we were using iPhoto. I must say the tagging function with integrated maps to pinpoint the spot was great.

I am going to do my own book with the maps for the coffee table near where some of the large prints from that series will be hung. Right now I'm using LR and then export the jpegs and import to the iphoto library. Would like to see how this works with Aperture and how all of the brush adjustments work.

I just can't get over their lame camera support. Come on you do a major new release in February and the GF1 that has been out since September and the Pen since June aren't included. Once again gives me pause of what the future holds when new cameras are released.

Thanks for info Terry. This is really excellent news - I'm delighted to see features such as curves, brushes, etc. Looks like they did their homework:-)

Has anyone seen if is possible to buy the upgrade through downloading or do you have to get the box?

How about converting the gf1 files into dng and then import into aperture...not perfect but it works ( hopefully)...

    HI William
I'm excited as well - I've ordered the upgrade, and I'm downloading the 30 day trial (should do the trick).

Raw support still shocking, but the fact that the d-lux 4, lx3, G1 etc. are included means that they should have bitten the lens selection bullet, so we can expect the Olympus cameras to follow soon - until then Kevin's wonderful little action will sort that out

Interesting that the M9 (which actually works fine with default support in Aperture 2) is not included either - I know it isn't Leica's fault.

    all the best

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

As an Aperture user since its initial release, I have to say that this latest version has some pretty significant improvements and new features. Everything from import, labeling, file handling, accessing multiple Libraries without exiting and restarting, etc., are all great to see. The image handling features are also most welcomed, especially things like the brushes, CA removal, etc. The outputs are also improved, and there is a wider selection of vendors for quality books. (I have been making books for my clients for several years, and they love them. The new additions/options, including a 13x10 book should be a big hit.) This new update includes import of HD video files with some ability to adjust/size clips, and then import them into slideshows, etc. While not a full NLE, like Final Cut Pro, it does look to be useful for folks starting out in video, maybe going on to bigger/better handling later.

As for the camera listing for files....there are some mistakes in their listing, so do not despair yet. For example, they have listed the Canon 1DsMkIV, which does not yet exist, but failed to list the 1DMkIV, which is already out. Besides, the camera/file handling is still controlled by the OS, not the app, so updates come along all the time. Would be nice to see a complete and ACCURATE list, however ;-)

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

I guess I will just run by my local apple shop to get a copy.

As for RAW support...I'm not too worried as almost 90 % of my files are TIFF i.e. scanned film:-)

I will read about all teh improvements as there are a long list of really interesting ones such as sync, new books, etc. Exciting times!!

if you whisper sweet nothings into Kevin's ear, he might be able to work some of his magic. not definitive, but since they have support now for the G1 and GF1, it just could work.

Hmmm...........so no GF1 support? Very very odd indeed.

What about sRAW for Canon cameras?

At last!, long time coming. Like LJL and Jono (i'm sure) I've been using Aperture since it's release. Infact before it's release I moved to the Mac Platform just to be able to use the application.

Just looking forward to 64bit performance and hopefully they have plugged the memory leak. :-)

Yes, it handles sRAW and mRAW from Canon cameras. Check their list....though somewhat inaccurate for some models, those file formats are listed.

    HI There
I'd like to think that these were omissions :

    Leica M9
    Olympus EP-1
    Panasonic GF-1

All of which are serious popular cameras which have been out for around 6 months or more

    . . . . but I bet the aren't

Sometimes it seems like they are intentionally trying to irritate!
Incidentally, I've applied for a trial, but it doesn't seem to be happening? (no email from apple).

GF1 is not an omission. It's really not supported. Just downloaded trial and no joy. BTW, try emailing for the trial again. I didn't get anything the first time either.

Actually - as I understand it - the new venture is all to do with the absinthe fund - so it's in Cam's interest to do a bit of promotion as well

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

I have managed to download the trial... but only after three requests to different email addresses of which only the last worked.

The sign up box was blank for me for a while but it eventually appeared

First quick dash through the app confirms it doesn't support e-p1 RAW

otherwise it looks very groovy indeed... the brushes thing is particularly good.

and it certainly seems snappier :-)

Hi There - thanks for that - it's working for me now too.
    But my internet connection is . . . . er limited - currently it's saying 2 hours 45 minutes.

    HI Kevin
I hope you're well . .. music to my ears (that snappier bit). I assume your wonder application still produces workable files? I'd have thought that getting a G1/Gf1 version out might be worth your while . . . . I see that Cam is already suggesting you can!

My browser now says it will have finished downloading in 6 years, 5 months 16 days and 21 minutes . .. our internet connection in Cornwall is not fab!

Hi There - some fairly important points which I have been told (I'm still downloading, several months left).

    1. the Trial version will not open existing Aperture Libraries
    2. you can buy an upgrade license online from the trial version without waiting for the boxed version.

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

Yes, both of those are true. You also have to move or rename your old copy of Aperture prior to install.

Still trying to figure out why after quitting the trial once I now can't import any images, or even see individual files when navigating to do so. Once I get to the last folder in a sequence of nested folders I just get a blank screen.

REVISED: Can import again after installing the latest update. Yes, there's already an update available.

    Hi Cam
Yes Please . . . actually, the download is complete - much more nervewracking is converting my existing library . . it's been at 2% these 20 minutes and more. At one point it said I had 1,487,000 properties, which was cool, but now now it's down to 97,000 . . . that's a lot of properties to lose in 20 minutes

Mine is asaying that it's going to take 2hrs 45mins but I suspect Apple is throttling the downloads so the systems don't crash. It normally takes 3-5 mins to download 600MB.

Mine kept speeding up all the way through the process and finished pretty quickly. Need to have OS completely up to date.

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

Can anyone comment on the speed of the cloning tool? I've found that with Aperture 2, my mid-'09 MacBook Pro 2.96 Ghz with Crucial 256mb SSD and 4 gb ram goes into the terminal spins after just a few spots cloned. This is with the faster of the two graphics cards selected. I bought the MBPro late last year to take advantage of the faster speed and more efficient operation of Aperture over my MacBook Air (assured by repeated calls to Apple Tech Support) and there is little to no difference in speed.

Also wondering why Aperture 3 can't be used on a pre Intel Mac Power PC G5 as Aperture 2 works fine on mine?

    Hi there Terry,
I just don't get it: right after ordering the trial version and before you could say "Aperture 3", I had the confirmation email with key in my mailbox.
Started downloading and then about 12 minutes later I was ready to start the installation.
What are you guys complaining about ?

Being a first time user I have to say it looks fab, but HTF does it work ?

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

I down loaded the trial and rather foolishly while I was waiting for the download to complete I ordered the upgrade version from the Apple website. Now I'm stuck in trial mode 'till the box arrives rather than getting an actuation license over the net by buying directly from within the Aperture 3 trial. Live and learn

Some nice features / improvements for sure, and a serious performance boost on my Mac Pro. I haven't really looked at printing, but some changes in the layouts and printer colour management control which will need some exploring.

One thing I've noticed is halos / posterizing or what ever you want to call them, but mainly in blown highlights in this part of a street lit image, I've noticed this more in OOF lights in night shots where the globes seem to get inner rings.

Here are 2 crops of unprocessed raws from A2 and A3, I know it's a small point but may be of interest to night shooters. It's just the initial release and I'm sure things will be adjusted in time.

Other than that, "I'm lovin' it"

At least, that's what my computer is saying. It's finding some difficulty in upgrading my 90Gb Aperture library (and that's just the library you understand, all 30,000 pictures are external to the library). I started it last night, and it'd run out of Application Memory space this morning. Now it's loaded, but it's 'upgrading', and it's very slow!

I think I'm gonna have to be patient here (I guess that adjustments and previews for 30,000 shots isn't a trivial issue )

Well then the 90Gb is made up of thumbnails and previews, WOW!

It might be worth making a copy of your Library and open it in Aperture 2 and delete all previews for the library.Close Aperture 2, Then in spotlight under your copied library search for and delete all your AP.Minis, AP.Thumbnails, AP.Tinies.

Should decrease the Library size drastically as you don't need the thumbnails or previews any more since Aperture 3 is going to generate it's own versions anyway.

Remember to use the copy of your library to play with, not the original

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

    Eoin, Kevin Thank you.
Right - I'm starting again - it was doing the update . . . but all adjustments were lost It just said 'this RAW file was processed with a previous version of Aperture - Reprocess?' As it loaded the preview, it looked right, then all crop / WB / Exposure / spotting changes I'd made disappeared in front of my eyes . . . horrible!
Fortunately everything is properly backed up, so I can try this several different ways.

Please just confirm to me that all the adjustments I'd made on previous raw files should be there (pretty please )

    all the best

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

Sorry Jono I can't confirm that until I get a proper license code and try converting a full Library rather than importing.

However, looking at the v3 library, there is a fundamental change in the structure compared to v 2. In the past, all library updates left images converted in prior versions intact. IE the decode engine was not changed from the old to new version by default. I'm seeing the same in v3 which in a sense is different. You need to hit the reprocess button added under the raw fine tuning brick for an individual master or by selecting all images and under menu item photos, reprocess masters. Here you'll get a menu selection to process all photos, photos with adjustments only, or photos without adjustments.

Another interesting feature is when selecting menu items if you hold the option key (alt) the items change to force generate rather than update.

Coming back to your original question, in my trial any images that had adjustments retained those through the export project from 2 to import project into 3.

    Re: Aperture 3 is here

    HI There Eoin / Kevin
    Interesting.
I first deleted all previews (as per the apertureexpert instructions)
My 90 Gb library went down to 72 Gb
    Then I deleted the AP.tiny AP.mini AP.thumbnails (as per Eoin's post)
My 72Gb library went down to 28Gb.

Now I've restarted Aperture3, and it's starting to update the library again.
I'll report back sometime next week:sleep006::sleep006:

Incidentally, everything is VERY backed up

    all the best

Jono, just one more thing..... I would recommend rebooting your mac and go straight into Aperture after restart to do any heavy import work, it seems the inactive memory still is never released back to aperture for some reason.

    HI Eoin
thanks for that - I've already done it, after last night's attempt at the update, I've switched off all screens savers/power management etc. emptied the trash, restarted the computer and begun the update process again.

Let's hope it works this time (4% completed).
