2023...what can we expect from Nikon?

My 85 1.2s is shipping out today. Going to play around with it and figure out if I want to keep it or not....thinking I may want something smaller, like a Fuji X cam and 56 1.2, but we'll see.

the same goes for the US, however, copyright law provides advantages for the copyright holder if it is registered with the US copyright office, such as increased damages for infringement. the idea with registration is that, by registering, you’re providing better notice that you own the...

Agreed. to be clear, I’m not advocating for circumventing nor am I trying to provide a blueprint for circumvention - just trying to point out the limitations of the copyright notice. there are a lot of misconceptions regarding IP lawon the internet, and, being in the field, I try to educate...

ehhh not necessarily in the eyes of US law. The copyright act by statute protects the copyright owner from unauthorized reproductions, and “reproduction” is not necessarily qualified under the statute (so any reproduction for any use could violate copyright) *not legal advice

just because you throw a copyright notice and other rights reservation language on a website does not mean (a) the copyright is valid; or (b) it’s even enforceable. As others have noted, copyrights, just like other IP, are jurisdictional and it depends on where the copyright is/are registered...

IQ4 frame averaging vs ND filter

let’s keep in mind that just because P1 has it, and hasselblad doesnt, that doesn’t mean there’s a patent issue between P1 and HB that is keeping FA off of HB cameras. I could do FA with the original A7R I had almost 10 years ago, and other systems have this functionality too, so it’s extremely...

IQ4 frame averaging vs ND filter

for sure! Cityscape is a specific use case but 100% agree that for landscapes and seascapes, it’s a god send. The files are SO clean too, definitely less noisy than typical long exposure with ND (which is a perfectly acceptable level of noise to me - not complaining just saying the FA ones are...

IQ4 frame averaging vs ND filter

Frame averaging is much faster for me since I’m not guesstimating exposure length. I also don’t have to worry about focusing before putting on dense ND filters. YMMV.

IQ4 frame averaging vs ND filter

In my experience frame averaging doesn’t work well on things like cars and headlights so I generally keep a ND filter on me as well.

    UV filter protection

I do. I’ve had at least two instances in the past of dropped lenses and the front element being saved by the UV filter taking the brunt of the impact, so, I keep ‘em on. With my tech cam lenses, Im also using the IQ4 150 Achro, so there’s pretty much always a filter on there.

    What the Phase...?

I think we're all waiting on the ability to manually enter metadata, such as movements with a tech cam, and for live view on the app (but not holding our breaths). Other than that - no complaints from me. I'm using an IQ4 150 Achro and an Alpa STC with 40/70 HR. My needs are also simpler -...

    Hasselblad discontinues the H?

Not sure this would surprise anyone, assuming it’s true (I’m not saying it’s not). the H-system was my first foray into digital medium format. I definitely have fond memories of it but moved on long ago. I suspect I’m not the only one…. they’ve got a great thing going with the X system and...

    What the Phase...?

I remember when I was in grad school the Leica reps would reach out to me. I’d jokingly tell them those decisions were above my pay grade but if they could get me some discounts on M or S systems I’d be willing to put in some work 😂 same with the cryostat folks. I definitely gave myself tennis...

    Rumors of new XCD lenses?

You could also look into buying a used copy and selling it after the trip. I do this sometimes, whatever I lose on the sale is usually less than the rental cost. YMMV.

Building a photography business in 2023, where to start.

+1 to the advice everyone has given. when I was finishing up grad school, I tried to make a stab at pro photography. I found no one cared what gear I shot with, no one wanted to buy prints, clients are difficult, and the clients I was exposed to wanted the universe for pennies onthe dollar. I’m...

    Rumors of new XCD lenses?

glad it’s got a good home! I’m mainly debating if I should “gear up” before Yosemite in May or not. Part of me is saying “get all the things, what’s the issue?” and the other part of me is saying “use what you have and enjoy the experience, dummy” haha. We’ve all been there.

    Rumors of new XCD lenses?

Interesting question for sure. I sold my 21 during the pandemic to free up cash for other things...I kinda want another one as well as the 135 + TC, but I'm hesitant to spend the $$ if they're going to give other focal lengths the 38/55/90 V treatment.
