Setting tilt, swing and focus with a tech cam

I don’t use those tools in the field. I do use them to practice and learn. I often look at the lumariver app to see what my lenses do in various situations. It helps me understand and predict how to handle certain situations. I don’t think there was anything inherently wrong with what you did. I...

You are very welcome. I'm hoping the new Alpa site will put up some of this. They have a location for it with links, but the links are not yet active. They used to have all this info on their older-old website. I always thought the sk apo-digitar 47xl WAS the same as the digitar 5.6/47. I am...

    Questions about the hyperfocal distance

The best detail I know of on this topic is the Lumariver DoF app. Here are the instructions, which are very detailed: https://www.lumariver.com/lrdof-manual/ Here is the detail about circle of confusion, airy discs, diffraction and how they all contribute to DoF estimates...

It's a really good question. When. I use the A/S cube, I have four sets of levels at my disposal: Tripod Cube Alpa STC / Alpa 12+ Digital back None of them agree! I also have a very accurate bubble level from Starrett that I've used to confirm which are the most accurate. The Alpa 12+ is the...

charging Copal 0 on Schneider 35 XL

I still do them in two situations: Shutter speed > 1 sec or ISO above 100. No science behind that; it's just what I do. Dave

charging Copal 0 on Schneider 35 XL

I don't agree. As long as the shutter can be manually opened and closed with the "Press Focus" lever, I would leave the shutter in place. If you need a black reference, it is so much easier with that lever. Especially if you have filters / lens hoods mounted. I wish they would have incorporated...

    Behind the scenes

I posted an image in the Technical camera thread and the discussion veered a bit off topic into more of a BTS discussion. I wanted to continue that here. I casually mentioned "a few mm back rise" because while I know there was some, I have no idea how many mm it was. Honestly I probably never...

    Technical Camera Images

So... "a few" is a clue that I don't remember! It is a 100mm lens on a 54x40 sensor. The closest tree on the left is maybe 8m and the base is cut off. Focus point is the live aspen trunk to the right of that closest tree; that base is in the frame. I plugged a few numbers into the PhotoPills app...

Thank you, Rob. Since this thread is all about technical cameras, it is worth pointing out that I think this is an image that would be quite difficult, if not impossible, to make without one. The road is a 4-6 meters above the ground shown in the photo. Obviously pointing the camera down would...

Cambo introduces a new technical camera: the Cambo WRC-490/491

This is fantastic! I love this STC approach. Looks like a great addition to Cambo’s products. Dave

Well, Peter and Dan gave me the nudge I needed. Been almost a year since I posted an image to this thread, which is nothing compared to their hiatus. I had the joy of photographing in the Eastern Sierra with John and others this fall. He showed some wonderful images in The Big Thread. Here is...

AI told me what technical camera to buy

Not sure about "the best choice," but it does seem like a "reasonable" choice given the criteria you have in the sentence above. It checks all those boxes. In my opinion, there is a big caveat to using technical cameras, and it comes down to how you like to work in the field: The ability to...

    Diagnosing optical performance problems

Marco, Nice work; I think that is a really good result. 20mm horizontal shift is a bigger IC than vertical (90mm vs 85mm), so you are really stressing it there at f/5.6. Schneider cuts off the graph at 70mm for f/5.6! And their IC claims were a wee bit optimistic. Dave

    Switching to Alpa

Just saw this. Nice old-thread revival! Interesting idea... I don't think so. Below is a photo of the sk100 in an Alpa mount. I picked that lens because it is one of the smaller lenses. Even with the 100, the helical takes up alot of real estate on the Alpa mount. Question is, could you make...

    Diagnosing optical performance problems

Hi Rod, Just investigated the 43XL. Yup, same design. And guess what I found in there between the cell and the housing? Two shims. @rdeloe, I think you found some in there on your 35 and thought it was some reckless soul after the fact. Those shims fit the required diameter exactly, so I'm...

    Diagnosing optical performance problems

Here is a better close up of the 35XL. You note the orientation of the tool slots in the rear cell group (5 and 10 o'clock). Then loosen those three screws but don't remove the cover flange ring. You can now rotate the rear cell around to orient it any way you like. those three screws are in the...
