Changing focus on GFX 100S while zoomed in with focus assist? Possible?

Hi,
I recently watched this video as a simple way to get sharp photos front to back in an easy way.

I tried it on my GFX 100S but could not change focus with the 35-70mm when zoomed in on focus assist. This technique would also need to enable the shutter button to be half pressed to show the working aperture.

Is it due to the lens being "focus by wire"? Apparently this is not an issue on Sony cameras...

Thanks in advance! :)

Can you explain more about what camera settings you are using?

I’m pretty sure that when I’m in manual focus mode on my X-E3, I can zoom in and still turn the focus ring on my lens. It doesn’t feel as responsive because it is focus by wire, but it works the way I’d expect. I have focus peaking turned on and MF override.

If I’m in AF mode with MF override, then I have to use AF and keep the shutter pressed half way to use the MF override. So I’d recommend switching into MF only mode for this.

Lastly, the order of operations might matter. On the X-E3, I can activate depth of field preview first and then zoom in for focus check, but not the other way around.

Thanks for the response, much appreciated!

Can you please check to confirm that you are able to achieve this?

As far as I know (my camera is not in front of me), I am in Manual mode and have autofocus set to the rear button. A half press of the shutter button shows the actual D.O.F and to zoom in to check focus, I press the rear horizontal wheel. Apologies for the rough explanation...

I can check focus when zoomed in by focusing the 35-70mm lens manually but cannot do when half pressing the shutter (engaging D.O.F preview).

Any ideas? Thanks :)

I could be missing something, but I think this is a weird limitation of the current firmware. An okay workaround is to set the camera to autofocus, focus, and then zoom in and use the manual override to tune the final focus…which means it could work, it just doesn’t in manual focus mode.

Good one, thanks for the reply! I think the issue is when you try and stop down and see the aperture previewed... Will have a play with it and see if I have any success.. :)

Jbeil is a fantastic location to invest in real estate, offering a mix of history, coastal views, and modern developments. If you’re planning to buy apartments in Jbeil, consider factors like proximity to the beach, amenities, and road access. Prices vary depending on whether you prefer a seafront property or something more inland. Be sure to review legal paperwork, check for hidden costs, and research the developer’s reputation before making a decision. Working with a trusted real estate agent can help you find the best deals.
Yes, the issue is likely due to your 35-70mm lens being focus-by-wire. Unlike mechanical focus systems, focus-by-wire relies on electronic input, which can make fine adjustments tricky when using focus assist. Fuji’s implementation may not allow smooth manual focus changes while zoomed in, whereas Sony cameras handle it better. You might try manual focus override in AF mode or use back-button focus to lock focus before zooming in.
