Comming Schneider Macro-Symmar 120mm f5.6 vs Schneider Xenon-Sapphire 3.2/96mm for medium film digitalising

hasselblad 503cw

Well-known member
Just got Schneider Macro-symmar 120mm f5.6 0060 lens by Aliexpress from China which is optimised at 1:2 when aperture fully open.
mount on automatic bellow using 65mm to Hasselblad V adapter, captured by FUJIFILM GFX 100SII with Hartblei V mount to GFX adapter.

Test result is excellent, nearly no CA at corners and very sharp from central to corner. it is much better than Hasselblad S-planar 120mm f5.6.
I attached tests as below, edit with capture one without sharp, captured at aperture fully open @f5.6 1/125 Iso 40, light source with Elinchrom strobe

Makro-Symmar 5.6/120-0.5x

Wherever complex web and surface inspections are concerned,

the line scan image capture method is used in most cases. Due to

the principle used, this method requires a very careful choice of

camera and an optimally adapted lens in order to achieve maxi-

mum system performance. It is essential to observe important

application-specific and physical parameters: the size of the CCD

or CMOS imaging sensor in the camera defines the minimum

required image circle of the lens.

Schneider produced three other industrial lens which are superior than Macro-Symmar,

Just found a used Schneder Xenon Sapphire 3.2/96mm 0.5X lens, cost me £780.
When I digitalised medium format 6x6 film using 33x44 CMOS sensor, the magnification would be round 0.5X, So I choose the fixed 0.5X Magnification lens which optimised Mag is 0.47X-0.53X.

There are nearly four adjustable magnification macro lens. one is Schneider Macro Varon 85mm f4.5 0.2x-2x, Rodenstock Linos 105mm /f5.6 0.3-3x, Nikon 150mm printing f2.8 third edition, and another japan lens. The adjustable magnification lens can't beat fixed magnification lens at specific magnification, it beat it by convenience with the price of compromise between quality and convenience. So I choose fixed Mag-lens to do specific job.

The Schneider Xenon Sapphire 3.2/96mm has brilliant MTF achievement which shown 42.5% flat @f4 @ 100L/mm, unbelievable.
MTF chart please refer link as below

the lens is coming from China where there are hundreds of industrial lens retired from factory. Don't buy from Ebay. You can't find one or high tag price. You can easily get Macro symmar 150mm f5.6 with price £100-£150 rather £500 something or more on Ebay.

Lens will be arrived in 3-4 weeks. I will test after get it.

There are many variants of this lens. The FLE variant is not the one you can find in industrial settings, it is the one optimized for photography and more expensive and rare.

The inspec lenses are on fixed mag ranges and don't require big adjustments say from 0.5x to 3x etc. This said, even the industrial ones, many to be found on eBay, are cheap and a great option for neg scanning.

Schneder Xenon Sapphire 3.2/96mm 0.5X ( 0.45X-0.55X) lens ( retrofit will be (1.8X-2.1X ) and 4.5/95mm 0.07X will be posted tomorrow from China.
I can't resist to get another 0.07X's lens even though which is sold more expansive than 0.5X's.
The 0.07X lens not recommended reverse fit, there are different Xenon Diamond for more than 2X to 5X, I think the Xenon Diamond is identical design with Sapphire, just optimised with high magnification.
Will test once get its.
