Critical focusing - CFV 100c on tech cam.

Went out to try the Schneider 120 for the first time. Disappointing results. The lens is capable, some of the images are nice and sharp, several are not. It is damn difficult to nail focus with only one magnification level! For me it is hit and miss. I would like to know how others manage with critical focusing? There is ofcourse the option to shim the back to perfect infinity at stop and to use laser and dial in with HPF rings. But, it feels yesteryear....

What exactly are you missing? I typically zoom in and focus. It works quite well with the Cambo.

I can turn the focusing ring quite a bit left and right where I see no change on the screen even at magnification!! So I go left to blur and right to blur and try and stop just inbetween, but that seems not a good method.

I usually change the aperture to wide open to achieve critical focus. For the image capture I stop down.

Today I was using an Alpa TC.

Yes, I also focus wide open, but still miss despite trying carefully to focus correct. I also tried focusing at the f stop for exposure with same results. Some perfect. Some soft. I would love another level of magnification, if the one there is now is 100% then I want 200% also.

Maybe try a magnifying loupe on the screen @ 100%. That works for me sometimes.

What I do:
  • Use a magnifier on the CFV-100c display
  • focus at maximum aperture, then close the aperture to the desired value before taking the shot
  • Activate focus peeking, it also works on the magnified view, but sometimes it not quite visible
  • Use ES instead of MS when possible
  • When on ES, use Phocus Mobile 2 as remote cableless (thus vibrationless) trigger

  • Then the obvious: sturdy tripod + head/leveler

+1, with one addition: instead of Phocus Mobile, I just use a timer.

I have a classic Hasselblad 500 CM. Unfortunately not here with me at the moment, but perhaps the chimny with loupe could work!

Just realised that I also have the Alpa ground glass with loupe. Will try them both tomorrow. Thanks for the link!!

I use either a 35mm 4x Schneider loupe or an Optivisor for viewing with the CFV100c zoom feature. I can nail focus nearly 100% of the time with 69 year old eyes. It's a bit tougher with a Rodie 23mm lens, but once it is stopped down, everything is in focus.

Dan.... I use a Peak or Schneider 4X loupe which is mandatory. I also always use peaking (never did with my 4150) which is a big benefit and is extremely accurate. I never miss focus with my CFV 100.
