Hi Raf, strange effect you got there! I have used fixed nd filters from a few secs to 2-3 mins and never seen that effect myself (at 12mm and wider). I wonder if it is the fact it is a variable (ie 2 polarisers) filter that is doing this?

Live Composite mode in full daylight, to capture the moving clouds 12-40mm/f2.8
The first test shot showed me that the varND filter does not work well with wide-angle lenses ... there is to much variation in the darkening to be corrected in post ...
This shot was at f=25mm / ISO 64 / 5sec / f22 and variable ND at max darkening

I'm still playing with the "Live Composite" functionality of my E-M1X and trying to find possibilities to shoot pleasant images in daylight. Today I went to a nearby lake, and took some shots in order to see if I can "flatten" the surface of the water ... unfortunately, the surface did not show much structure, it was almost flat as a mirror ... still, I gave it a go at some 60 images of 2 sec each ... with variable ND filter, at f11 but focal length 40mm so no problem with x-form from the filter ...

Here is one of them ...

The weather has changed for worse, heavily overcast today and some minor rain ... we're glad that most of our crops have been harvested already ...
The overcast sky made me go outside to experiment further with the Live Composite function of my E-M1X
The sky certainly does look much more natural now even though I shot like 2 min worth in 1 sec shots ...

Stay safe,
Rafael

Hi Raf, is there a reason that you want to use a series of short exposures and then blend them? I have attached below a 77sec exposure (10 stop nd) to show the effect of not compositing. I feel this gives a much more pleasing result (if you like cloud movement).

There is, Alan : the "normal" long exposure lightens all the pixels in the image to the same degree ... so, you risk overexposure on some places ... with live composite, you only modify pixels that brighten, the rest remains unchanged ... but, in due time, I'll play with the bulb and the live time modes too ...

O.k. I was under the impression it was designed for such as light painting and so forth not long exposures as such. Enjoy the journey. (y)
