I hope I may be allowed a little brag! Today, I attended the finals of the David Malin awards (Australia's leading astrophotography competition). This includes the work of some extremely expert people doing deep space images with telescopes and the like. But there are categories that are more suited the sort of work I do too...

I'm delighted to say that I won the category entitled 'Working with Light in the Night' with this image, shot with GFX100S and Pentax 645 28-45mm lens @ 45mm. Taken during Sydney's annual Vivid festival. I shot the light beams and installations moments before they went out at the end of the festival - then carried on shooting for a further 90 mins for the stars.

(Apologies that this is a repost of the image, which I shared here when I first took it)

Fantastic - well done!

There is a great deal of processing in much of the astro photo world - nice to see such a wonderfully-composed, “no trickery” image do well.

How is it to work with the Pentax zoom on the GFX?

Thank you so much, everyone. Hugely appreciated! I've been participating in this competition for years, so it's nice to win at last...

As to the question about the Pentax zoom on the GFX, I find it pretty easy to be honest (using a Fotodiox adaptor). Obviously this sort of picture is set up very carefully, so the fact that the use of the adapted lens is a bit fiddly hardly matters. The optical quality of the lens is excellent. Occasionally the adaptor can cause flare, but only in rare situations. The main issue, when using a Pentax 645 lens without an aperture ring, is guessing what aperture you're actually using (the adaptor has a generic aperture ring that works by grabbing the relevant lever on the lens mount, but it doesn't "know" which position corresponds to which f-stop on each lens, so you're sort of deducing that from experience). Since I haven't been able to afford to buy a single Fuji lens yet, this method of working is all I know with the GFX and it suits my style pretty well.
