An image that shows me that, no matter how often we do things, basic errors and forgetfulness should still keep us grounded!

I went out to shoot star trails here, quite forgetting a mantra I had learnt many years ago: don't shoot the Harbour Bridge by night once the weather warms up. That's because the warm weather brings out insects into the lights, which in turn attracts birds. The trails left by birds are an unholy mess, which make star trail images either impossible or end up requiring even more work to edit them out (one frame at a time) than even a madman like me can face. So I satisfied myself with this image and went home to bed!

Ed,

Whatever your original plan, this quite a lovely image, without star, bird or other trails to distract from the remarkable serenity of the scene!

Thanks, John. I appreciate that very much. It's only in the very small hours of the day that the Harbour waters are ever this still, and even then, only on calm days. I had a little glimpse of how easily the calm is disturbed while I was there. I had everything set up, when a single boat passed by (it was, by this time, about 2.30am), disturbing the water. Waves started reflecting off the shorelines, causing interesting demonstrations of constructive and destructive interference. Things didn't fully settle down again for about 35 minutes after the passing of the boat. Thankfully, no other boats passed in that time to start the process off again!

Who was it who said, "There is always a beautiful picture to be taken; only seldom is it the picture you went to take."

Obviously a star trail version of this will look amazing, but I will have to wait for things to cool down in southern hemisphere Autumn 2025.

Musée Narbo Via in Narbonne, France. Ancient Roman funerary monuments that were displaced centuries ago so their original locations are unknown, spent some time as just another brick in the city wall, now preserved in a museum. GFX 100s with the GF 35-70 and some geometry adjustment in Photoshop
