I am new to the forum, but coming up to digital image processing exactly for this.
I have some (acquired cheap) 12 megapixes nikon dslrs circa '05-08 that were sold for 3-6K at the time, complementing my old 'film-era' lenses.
And I think 'non-critical' hi iso (1000+) photos can be 'beatified' with tools like gigapixel AI. And that' my current thesis
I researched open source tools (rawtherapy, dark room, gmic) to see if they offer AI-based denoising, but it does not seem so. So commercial offerings are the only options.
In the future, I think autofocus (including multi-lens concurrent autofocus), image stabilization, and ability to quickly read censor data, color accuracy -- will be key camera features, and censor's noise performance will be relegated to tertiary as accuracy-preserving denoising will be done in post processing.
